I guess we'll have to call the Indigo / Verna / Fiesta as the Logan's competitors, unless of course, we actually consider the C-Class as M&M would want us to. (though I really feel its just the Indigo. The Verna and Fiesta are considerably more expensive and are built much better too, I would believe)

Its fair enough chance that the Logan might offer decent battle to the Indigo and even come out on top, but I would put a lot of money on it not being better than the Fiesta or the Verna.

Scenario - I : the Logan is just about marginally better than the Indigo.
Result : Consumer might not want to pay the premium and would prefer to go for the Indigo which cheaper by ~ 40 grand, but has the advantage of being a tried and tested product (known devil factor), and TATA's familiar service network. They might not be too sure that M&M warrants the extra premium. But the DICOR Indigo is more expensive, which is a important factor in M&M's favor.

Scenario - II : the Logan is not as good as the Indigo or just about the same.
Result : Same as above, but result more disastrous for M&M in terms of Logan sales.

Scenario - III : the Logan is comprehensively better than the Indigo
Then it should sell better than the Indigo logically, but it needs to be that much better and offer that much more VFM for the consumer to disregard a tried and tested product with an established service network to cater to the kind of volumes we are talking about. so whether that comprehensively better quality translates into the kind of sales M&M is hoping for is anybody's guess.

Of course, it all boils down to Scenario - III. Is the Logan comprehensively better than the Indigo ??? I definitely hope so for the following reasons:

1. consumer wins in terms of better choices for his money.
2. TATA's hand is forced and will need to drastically improve its offering w.r.t. the Indigo. Again consumer wins.
3. Diesel hatches like the Swift will be forced to cut prices. Again consumer wins.
4. TATA will then be forced to DICORise its Indica too, sooner than later.

So I guess yeah, I'm hoping for scenario three. The Logan doing well could well be a good thing for all of us.

Note:

All of the above is based purely on the Diesel offering. I am not talking about the petrol at all.

I'm sorry for repeating this point again and again, , but it never fails to flabagast me.... The 155mm ground clearance! Yesterday it was drizzling a bit in Hyderabad, and I began to wonder how will the Logan run in the monsoons? if the GC is the among the lowest of the cars on the road, logically it means that it will be among the first to get stuck on the waterlogged streets of India.
Then my second brillient idea was that Mahindra should give free Logans to all the politicians.... this way, they will have to improve the roads and drainage systems in order to run the car!!!

I just saw the listed prices of the "New" Ford Ikon, starting at Rs. 4.78 lakhs. Heck, add that to the list above.

And hell_rider, I listed the prices of it's so called competitors, viz the Fiesta & the Verna to make it obvious that they were in a totally different price bracket.

ok elf....then we are on the same page w.r.t. the Fiesta and the Verna being in a different league altogether, both in price and quality. i got thrown off by the mention of the Indigo as well, I guess, which I feel is the only competitor. And of course the C Class, according to M&M.

The Tata V Series stands for 'Value'. In other words, an even more stripped down Tata. Aimed primarily at the lower end & fleet buyers.

Probably just like the Logan.

Guys I heard that the Logan is very wide compared to other cars in its class. People who have already seen it, care to comment?

Indigo V series is the indigo in the old shape without the cosmetic changes that were made recently.

Indigo LX DICOR-BS III: Rs. 596,274

Logan DLS 1.5 dci: Rs. 643,939

Many people here think the Logan is overpriced compared to Indigo LX (Top model Indigo).
What we are ignoring is the fact that Logan top model comes with so many goodies missing in Indigo LX, like:

Front Airbag
ABS
Theatre dimming lights
Distance to empty meter
Mileage indicator
Lumbar support
3 rear headrests
CD player
Driver's seat height adjuster

and so on..

Not to mention its width and rear legroom.

So i dont think its overpriced compared to atleast Indigo top model. I cant comment on Indigo XL, somebody please enlighten its cost and features so we can have a one to one comparison.

yups, that is a decent goodie bag for about ~40 grand more. I wouldn't mind going for the Logan everything else remaining equal.

But I would expect better driveability and NVH levels at least at par with the Indigo, if not better.

That ABS, Airbag and Driver Seat Height Adjust alone does it for me. I don't care for the rest of it.

So thats also in Logan's favor.

So over to TATA. do we see 90 bhp Indigo's with ABS and airbags at around 5.75~6.25L ?? This is going to fun to follow.

Does it mean they would be fighting with TATA only and not doing something to the whole segment ?
