Aveo U-VA awarded BS Motoring Car of 2007 !

General Motors India’s new hatchback, the Chevrolet Aveo U-VA, is the Business Standard Motoring Car Of The Year 2007.

The U-VA beat formidable competition from the Honda Civic, the Hyundai Verna petrol and diesel, the Chevrolet Aveo 1.4 and 1.6, the Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo, and the Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia to win the top honours.

The U-VA won the award for being a well-built spacious hatchback that offers surprisingly peppy performance from its 1150cc motor, which is fuel efficient too. For its size, it rides and handles well and comes with a comprehensive list of safety and comfort features. The clincher, of course, was its persuasive price-tag.

The Business Standard Motoring rating system is designed to reward cars that are affordable and fuel efficient, keeping the larger mass of Indian buyers in mind. Only all-new cars that were launched in calendar year 2006 were eligible for the 2007 awards.

The U-VA joins previous winners like the Maruti Suzuki Swift (2006), Hyundai Getz (2005), Honda City (2004), Mahindra Scorpio (2003), and Fiat Palio (2002).

Other 2007 winners of the oldest automotive awards in the country have also been announced. The 150cc Hero Honda CBZ X-Treme trounced the new 125cc competition like the Honda Shine, Suzuki Zeus, and the Yamaha Gladiator to win the Business Standard Motoring Bike Of The Year 2007 Award.

The CBZ X-Treme won points across the board, and its strengths in engine performance, handling and riding pleasure helped it beat the rest of the competitors.

Fending off the likes of Audi Q7, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and the Honda CR-V, the superbly accomplished Toyota Camry has gone on to win the Business Standard Motoring Import Car Of The Year 2007 Award.

The Honda Civic won the Business Standard Motoring Jury Award 2007 for becoming the new benchmark in its segment. The radical Civic is brilliant in all aspects and may have even become the Car Of The Year, if not for its price-tag.

The Business Standard Motoring Performance Car Of The Year 2007 Award went to a car that runs on diesel but keeps up and sometimes even beats quick and fast petrol machines — the Hyundai Verna 1.5 CRDi.

The Italy-designed Kinetic Blaze, which has unleashed a maxi-scooter craze in the country, is the Business Standard Motoring Scooter Of The Year 2007.

U-VA has not even been tested by them or released on sale
They kind of stated short of saying the Civic was the winner but we wanted the dosh

I thought BS-M were genuine car guys - what a waste in donating 10+ years of CAR UK mags - lost on them.

But I've not seen a single U-VA on roads here. Shouldnt awards be given AFTER some meaningful road presence? Or is that these COTY are mostly given to any new launches under the 5 lac category?

This is really funny. If at all the criteria were affordability and fuel efficiency, keeping the larger mass of indian buyers in mind, why didnt they consider the new Zen Estilo?? May be the BS guys should have added one more criterion to the selection - "the car must have been launched two weeks before and nobody should have spotted even one car of this make and model on the road !!!!"

They've now justified their 'BS' tag.

I expect they'll justify their award by saying this is a '2007' award and that the U-VA/Kalos have been driven elsewhere.

OT: How about setting up a Team-BHP Car of the year poll? I'd say the results of such a poll will tell a totally different story.

What can I say?
These guys have gotta be biased. Two cars that I feel should have really won this title are the astonishing Honda Civic and the highly underrated Mitsubishi Cedia. I've not even seen a Aveo U-VA.

We see this type of lack-lusture journalism, pay-2-print tactics by journalists/Manufacturing companies want o get some cheap-publicity. But in longer term it is not benefecial for either for magazine or manufacturer.

Their credibility takes a hit with such reviews/awards -- it hurts them in long term. But who cares -- boss likes result producing subordinate(even though way to obtain this result at whatever cost to credibility of organization).

IMHO off the topic, I/many have lost interest on film-fare-awards/Doctorates(with out any real-studied-Phd) in India -- as these can be obtained from infinite-sources(companies, tv-broadcasters, paper-agencies, payments, manipulate-judges, recommendatins,etc).

Easy guys. The article tells that a jury tested the following cars (criteria: newly launched in 2006)

Maruti Suzuki Zen Estilo
Mitsubishi Lancer Cedia
Chevrolet Aveo
Hyundai Verna 1.6 and 1.5 CRDi
Honda Civic
Chevrolet Aveo U-VA

and Aveo-UA got more points and hence it is the winner. It also say Civic scored heavily but lost out on price.
Quotes from article:
"(Civic's) Rs 11.29 lakh ex-showroom is way too off the price paid by the average Indian car buyer".
"The secret is that the U-VA did consistently well in all the parameters without emerging too strong in any single one."

Lets wait and see how the car performs on road and how the Indian car buyers receive it.
