Production-spec Tata HBX crossover spotted

New images of the production-spec Tata HBX have surfaced online.

The Tata HBX is based on the ALFA platform which is shared with the Altroz. The exterior design of the sub-4 meter crossover is based on Tata's Impact 2.0 design philosophy. It gets a Harrier-like front fascia with slim LED daytime running lights on either side of the grille and headlamps positioned lower down on the front bumper.

As you can see in these images, the HBX features a rugged look courtesy of the black body cladding. One of the cars has a dual-tone exterior finished in blue and white. It appears to be a higher variant as it is equipped with fog lamps and dual-tone alloy wheels.

The Tata HBX is likely to be offered with a 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 85 BHP and 113 Nm, while higher variants might get a turbocharged 1.2-litre motor. Transmission options might include a 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT.

Interesting catch! Isn't that colour unique to the EV line of Tata vehicles? So is HBX EV variant in the queue for release? I was hoping Altroz EV would hit streets, seems like Tata has different plans.

I feel the tyres are a tad too small. The wheel-wells can be seen prominently.

The altroz i-turbo also gets the same shade of blue.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

The rear has a striking similarity to the XUV 300 in shape if not size.

It looks much smaller than the Nexon, Will it compete against the Maruti S-Presso?

The gap in the rear wheel arch is way too big for my liking.

Otherwise looks like Tata has developed quite a proportionate city runabout vehicle with some plastic cladding to add the SUV flavour on a budget.

Not the S-Presso, but the Wagon-R. I guess its the perception that matters.

Some people see the Tiago as a Swift competitor, whereas others (me included) see the Tiago as a Celerio/Wagon-R competitor, and a segment below the Swift.
So, much in the same way, this will be either a Wagon-R or an Ignis competitor, depending on what you see it as.

Safety ratings aside, I see no reason to get this over a much larger Magnite/Kiger, assuming they are priced in the same ballpark.

The rear looks a lot similar to the XUV 3oo.
I think this will compete with the Ignis.

Nexon Petrol launch price in 2017 was 5.85L, now it is 7.2L.They created enough room for HBX over a period of time.
Nissan Magnite launch price was 4.99L and Tata should keep the HBX base variant price ~ 4.5L and top spec ~ 7L.

The Tiago retails at 4.99 presently. Why do you think this will be priced lower than the Tiago?

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Hope Tata Motors have tweaked the petrol engine in this model to greater levels of smoothness. And also hope that TML has got rid of that irritating flat spot at the 2000-2200 rpm mark, which was at its worst in Tiago Gen-1, a bit less in Tiago 2019 and facelift Tiago 2020. Even the naturally aspirated Altroz suffers from a blip in its rev band.
The biggest bummer in TML's present model range is its petrol engine. It's no match for the competition out there, be it in terms of tractability, smoothness, revv-ability, overall refinement or real world fuel consumption.
If they have not done it already, TML had better seek some good engine consultants to re-engineer their three pot 1.2L Revotron or whatever they call it.

Because the competition is fierce and very talented. The creamy smooth Suzuki K-12's, the rev happy Honda 1.2's, the peppy Ford 1.2 Dragon. Don't forget the Hyundai 1.2L naturally aspirated which although no fireball, is quietly refined and has a fine degree of low end tractability. The 1.0 litre Hyundai turbo's are also very peppy. VW has also blown the socks off Tata by showing them performance and driveability can happily coexist with an acceptable price tag.

While TML is building attractive looking, safe automobiles with good ride and handling balance, the last jigsaw in the puzzle needs to be filled in the guise of a thoroughly enjoyable powertrain.

Looks like Tata is taking the Samsung route.

1. Tata HBX - Harrier Lite
2. Tata Harrier
3. Tata Safari'21 - Harrier Plus

No offense to the owners/admirers of the above cars.

Correct, but bigger Magnite base variant price even after the increase is 5.5L only, Kiger is 5.45L, What TATA do now?

Tiago launch price was 3.2L for the base, I did not know it costs 5L now (that is ~ 56% increase in 5 years).

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

During the Last Auto Expo itself it was told by Pratap Bose (the Designer) that the Production version was almost 95% that of the Show Car. The Spy pics so far indicate the same with the notable exception of the Tyres/Wheels and the Roof mounted Luggage Rack (of course).

It'll be safe to Expect that the Final Production version will be exactly like the Show Car except for the above mentioned changes.

Also it Looks to be a SWIFT rival in terms of Size to me rather than the Xpresso, Ignis, Wagon R.

All car prices have increased exponentially over the past 5 years, especially after the BS6 norms. WagonR is also priced at 4.80L for the base variant.

I think Tata can price this at par with the Magnite/Kiger base variants. This is smaller than the Magnite and Kiger but I think Tata has built a better brand value than at least Nissan and Renault in the Indian market. The Swift, which is the same size as this starts at 5.75 lakhs, so the question is just not about the length of the car.

A price range of 5.5L to 8L also fits in nicely with Tata’s range of cars. The Altroz, based on the same architecture, starts at 5.8L. I don’t think Tata can price it much lower than the Altroz. The faux SUV credentials may also give some breathing room to this car, in terms of pricing.
