THIS, exactly was my point right in the beginning.

Isn't the HBX going to compete in a segment lower - but by virtually creating its own segment per se? It is going to be smaller than the current crop of sub4m SUVs. More into a territory between the Tiago-WagonR-Celerio-i10-Swift area. Whether it competes with the Kiger/Magnite or not - only the market will tell. It may have a slight overlap in some of the trims on price - but then that is now a norm from B1 to B2+ segments across all brands.

Even if it competes with the Magnite-Kiger with an AMT - the thin sales+service networks of these 2 & typically perceived higher ownership costs of these 2 brands (I am only quoting what I have read / viewed on trusted media outlets) - the HBX may do a god job on sales. In fact - I'd go on to say if there is a car that justifies an AMT squarely - it would be an HBX. A butch looking beefed up hatchback-suv on a budget. As per the paid media outlets so far - this car will compete with the S-Presso & KUV100. With enough publicity already in place to downplay this product - I don't see the need of a DCT in it. Best make money with an AMT. Ideally - this should percolate into the higher placed NEXON getting a DCT and a TCAT respectively for petrol & diesel engines. A clear distinction & justification of the Nexon's higher placement.

Whats pleasant to see is that the production spec seems to be coming with the brushed grey finish on the steering wheel trim, rather than the cheesy cheap looking piano black finish on the Tiago-Nexon low/mid trims. This matte grey looks far better.

There were no fan boys defending what you said and trust me, no sentiments were hurt .

All the subsequent replies were showing the realities of competition vs hypothetically equipping a car with segment above features and pushing it out of segment price range, segment which is highly price sensitive.

Isn't HBX actually competing against ignis and kuv100 and not magnite/kiger?

Yes and I would add Maruti swift to this list as well.

Dimension wise, HBX is equal to swift in length (3840 mm), has identical wheelbase (2450 mm) but HBX is taller and wider as compared to swift by at least 100 mm and 85 mm respectively.

Ignis and kuv100 are very slow movers in terms of sales charts. Swift is the main target of HBX, I strongly believe.

Now that dust is settled in Safari page, people have hopped into Horbill thread and have started having unrealistic expectation just because it is a TATA product. And those who explain the reality are called fanboys!

I feel it will be a historic shift in TATA strategy if they launch automatic from day One.
Tiago, Tigor, Nexon, Hexa, Harrier and Altroz -- None of these cars had Automatics from day One.
Safari is the only car to get automatic from day one and we know that is because its just a bigger harrier and harrier already has AT. So the bigger question is - Will TATA launch Hornbill AMT from day one?

I for one believe that every car crossing the 7 lac rupee mark should have a proper automatic BUT these are just my thoughts.
We have cars here costing above 15 lacs (on road) which come with the 'jugaad' automatic, so there's nothing wrong if the HBX gets an AMT and itíll be really nice if it gets it from the word go!

We sometimes forget that Tata is also here to do business

Hexa was available with automatic from day one. It was available in XM as well as in XZ version.

When I was buying Hexa in 2017 Jan, I test drove first XT 4x4 and then AT the next day, was very impressed with AT. However, the on road cost difference and other features like TCS, ESP tilted in favour of XT MT.

TML has learnt few tricks to keep market engaged, this is the reason they are bringing in AT's late in to the market. Also, this helps them to gauge the acceptance of the product by the people hunting in that particular market segment.

And this is the new thing now which many are following is to avoid the sticker shock.

Cars have now become like smart phones, we can expect an update after every 6-7 months. This is the new normal in automotive market, keep the pot boiling and make sure it emits new fragrance every 6 months.

Tata has always said that unlike its multinational competitors, it doesn't have the luxury of scale.

Whereas the likes of Koreans and Europeans can choose an existing engine or transmission from their international portfolio and afford to present all at the time of launch, Tata has to take time to either develop or outsource while considering whether there will be enough scale to devote time and resources.

But, with the HBX, they finally have some advantage. The Altroz, based on the same platform, is already on the road.

It has an NA petrol, a Turbo petrol and a Diesel. Apart from a 5 speed manual transmission, a DCT is also in the works.

I would really hope Tata goes all guns blazing with the HBX.

Even if the base variants have an NA petrol, transmissions both manual and AMT, they should really consider adding in the Turbo Petrol and DCT even if at a later stage.

The new i20 is a good example that people are willing to pay extra for extra features.

--

I have again tried to guesstimate the pricing, based on four guesses and some rounding off.

One, a 30k premium over Altroz, considering traditionally crossovers are more expensive than their hatch siblings.
Two, a 40-50k premium for AMT over manual. Took this from the Tigor pricing.
Three, a 60k premium for TC over NA. Took this from the Altroz pricing.
Four, a 1 lakh premium for DCT over manual. A wild guess here.

Also, with even the Altroz starting from 5.7 lakhs, I don't see Tata pulling off a 4.99 lakh starting price offer like the Magnite.

Since Nexon DCT has been in works since more than year, and still hasn't made it to road, I'm skeptical about the DCT in HBX.

Any idea when is this slated for launch?
It's been like ages since test mules are on the roads .
