re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Came across this article in Rushlane

Tata H2X SUV and Altroz will share 70 percent parts to reduce cost price.

Quote:

It will be based on the company’s new ALFA – Advanced Light Flexible Agile architecture and will share more than 70 percent of its parts with the Tata H2X micro SUV. This has also been revealed by Guenter Burschek, CEO of Tata Motors, in an interview with Fortuner India.

This comes as a surprise, as that is a high level of part sharing among two cars which are completely different in nature. This sharing of parts will allow the company to not only minimize development and inventory but will also bring down production costs to a great extent.
Source

So if one doesn't like Altroz, they will not like H2X

It is definitely understandable to save costs considering the market situation now and it is much better than deleting features later. Hope they don't rush up and deliver uncooked products.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

TML seems to have hit a bump in the development of the H2X.
TML was seriously planning to utilise the Chery Tiggo2's platform as the base on which they could start work on the H2X, but it seems that the cost of converting the left-hand-drive, LHD, Tiggo2's platform to an RHD one for India is more complex than it had initially envisaged and initial cost estimates are well over budgeted limits.
From what can be ascertained, the engineering challenges are proving to be too costly as well as time consuming to be overcome. Nevertheless, TML is still soldiering in to try and arrive at a best possible solution.

This is the Hornbill thread, I suppose you are talking about the Creta rivalling Blackbird being discussed on this thread (Tata Blackbird: Creta-rivaling SUV being developed)

As per a birdie, Hornbill might end up being a petrol-only offering, when launched.

Plenty of petrol test prototypes running around inside the TML plant. Not a single diesel.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Considering the target market and the fact that most of Hornbill's rivals can be had only with petrol, it is not a big deal.

Only fly in the ointment is Tata's persistence with the 1.2l 3 potter. Agreed it has been worked on extensively and is far better than the crude ones in the initial Tiagos. The Nexon tune and JTPs notwithstanding, it's a pretty commuter engine.

Tata is developing a new 1.5l petrol engine, but then that's earmarked for the Omega platform.

Damn our small car norms.

Looks like a raised Tiago to me. Assuming it will be launched in petrol only, let's see how it actually turns out and how Tata positions it. Till then just wait and let them remove the wraps at the AutoExpo.

Don't just see the rear view brother. The bonnet area and the A-pillar do not look similar to Tiago at all. It's squared and upright.

Padding. To camouflage the actual looks. It could go either way. So like @ktrhottle says above, let's wait for the wraps to be taken off, and we will all know.

Yes, I agree about the padding and know about it. But the placement of the headlamp and the A-pillar still looks different to the Tiago. Anyway, as you both have said, we'll wait and watch.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Ok this mule looks promising & is much more imposing in stance than what I was imagining. The beefy A pillar is making me feel its going to be a strong car & not just another light build for mileage masquerading as a tall boy / SUV. Rear glass rake & hatch angles reminded quickly of the Ford Freestyle.

The straight line A pillar meeting a flat roof at angle is so much old gen Swift like! In a good way. Rarely have we seen a Tata car since the Sumo with such angular top corner for A pillar. (Makes the job that much tougher in a crash test though. Sweeping roof line together with A Pillar always works best in transferring impact energy effectively.)

Looking at the dimensions & shape, I am suspecting this car will boast of best in class boot space.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Dimension of Wagon R new 3655 1620 1675
Dimension of Triber 3990 1793 1643
Dimension of Tata H2x 3840 1822 1635

Widest car, Longer than wagon r, Almost same height as triber. Considering that tata cars are always safer except nano, I might consider this product. But only concern is product success, continuity, parts availability and resale value.

Product success doesn't really make any difference to individual ownership experience. Parts availability has never been a problem for Tata cars. It might be a bit slow, but parts are always available. Resale will never be in Maruti territory. But if you keep the car for more than 6-7 years, this point becomes pretty insignificant if you use the car aplenty & it serves you well for the money you spent.
