Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Everything looks good except the name! Looks like Tata really ran out of ideas here! This is as good as naming cars A, B & C. No imagination at all.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Since the car looks like Nexon, the expectation of matching Nexon performance wise seems unrealistic. It should be compared with Tiago (similar engine, price range) and then things will make more sense.

If we want it to be priced low, are we saying Nexon is overpriced?

Engine is one of the biggest contributor for OEM to decide pricing. No compromise in PUNCH on safety, space, design, interiors. Then what else (than engine, gearbox), can they adjust to reduce price?

And please note, they said this 1.2L 3-cylinder is optimized for low gears to compensate the "lack of punch"/power lag, which Altroz NA has. Let's see how our official review finds it.

In short, the car is a great package, assuming it's less than 9L. Thanks to Tata, for accepting people's feedback of having AMT on launch.

And can anyone confirm there is no Diesel option for PUNCH ?

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

The problem is MSIL will now pitch the Swift and Ignis as being more capable in terms of everyday performance (and mileage).

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Really can't believe they have botched it again, this once again looks like a world class product, this totally had the potential to sell a lot and maybe eat into Swift/Baleno and other hatchbacks sales too as mini SUVs are the flavour these days and they have nailed it on the desirability quotient.

What they have royally messed up is using the same old lame 1.2L engine and they have the audacity to mention 16.5 seconds 0-100 time! They once again have better engines and this should have been a proper launch learning from their previous mistakes but no.
Also it is not that their 1.2 L engine is great in any respect, it doesn't come near the well established and now improved K12 or Hyundai's Kappa 2, combine that with heavy weight and we get an absolute dud. Even the i20 petrol which was my first car and biggest regret because of the slow engine was faster to 100 than this, and before someone points out that one does not need the power in city, well it is not about drag racing but a weak and underpowered engine is mostly weak in all use cases and applications and even if one is still satisfied the competition is so much better that there is no reason for a company to offer such engines in 2021!
That combined with that customer's video in the Safari thread and multiple issues he has had with the company makes me want to stay away from this company forever, i'am not to be easily influenced by such things but that guy made very valid points. I'd be happier buying a Maruti than this.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Apart from the under powered engine, all else looks good. And how many people will actually ask about the engine while buying. The AMT is a deal breaker though considering the Kiger / Magnite will be overlapping this on price.

The only reason I can think of is Tata wants to eat the extra profit by not providing a proper AT. Either that or they are confident an AT buyer will anyway prefer another offering to their cars.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

One thing for sure , the fate of Indian small car market now rests on TATA . Keep the prices in check and this car will do what Nano was supposed to do to the market , turn it upside down. This is a product that in TATA's language will " Reclaim their Nano's dreams to rule the roots of Indian car market ". Best wishes to them for that .

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Enough has been said about the name and engine. However the same engine is doing decent numbers in Tiago and Altroz without much niggles and hiccups as reported by Brand names who are stranded by Robust pumps.

I agree Tata has to cover a far distance in customer service. But the scenario in where companies are leaving India I d bet my money on Tata.

Why do you want that? I was quite unhappy when Discovery Sport, Dusters, Compasses and Yetis started going till Sandakphu. There should be a few places left where only hardcore SUVs with low ratio gearboxes can go! Otherwise these SUVs will only be left to do weekend offroading in some private grounds I hope the road from Sandakphu to Phalut remains like hell so that the crossovers don't start 'conquering' that as well

It seems that it is still the same. A little bird told me that the Punch had to be pushed at places to go till the top. But even then, it should be an achievement as I had heard that Polo stunt done by Sirish and the EVO guys was a lot worse. Many parts had to be changed on the Polo for that stunt and even then it did not go beyond Kalipokhri. But Tata should have given a disclaimer.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Maruti 800 did 0 to 100 in 17 seconds, a car launched decades ago and now we have one which does it 16.5 and its advertised as one of the USP's. I will pray for Tata.

They need to start a revolution, look at XUV700, but sadly they are stuck at evolution.

Bring in something like with better engines, a petrol turbo, a diesel turbo, a torque converter automatic and look at the $$$ counters go mental.

Interesting to see Tata is making the Punch do mild off-roading as well, in the media drive.
