Tata H2X spied again in production ready form. Judging by the pictures i think it might end up looking like the Venue, especially with those Hyundai'ish alloys and front LEDs.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

How much money do they have for building new products? And why are they allowed to kill the products that didnt click so soon?

Shouldnt they have been asked to refresh the ARIA instead of HEXA? There was some talk about even HEXA being axed (perhaps the defense forces saved the day?).

Whats really going on here?

Not sure if its Tata Hornbill or not but looks similar to past spy shots. Spotted it at Daund toll plaza on Pune-Solapur highway

It is Tata car for sure. You can see the same camouflage patterns on Nexon, EV, Altroz, Harrier, and Gravitas test cars as well.

From afar, it's kind of hard tell these apart from Renault cars which have similar looking camo.

But the front picture pretty much confirms it as the H2X. As expected - a "Harrier meets Nexon & enters a pressure champer" look overall. And Ranault mules generally don't run with MH14 temp plates. Would be interesting to see the wheel size they choose in the production spec. Nexon was a good balance of budget, looks & road grip. Harrier felt a tad small-tyred visually. H2X enters whats basically the hatchback segment. Altrz top spec gets R16 (with thinner tyres of course). So lets see!

On a different note - the front door proportion looks odd in this particular picture. The lower edge / running board is quite near the road surface while the head of the gentleman at the wheel is quite higher off the ground. Either the seats are installed way high up, or he has adjusted it to the highest position in adjustment.

Yes, I meant just the camo is similar looking. But this seems to be a Tata. First time I'm hearing that Tatas don't run on MH14 plates. Nice info there!

Btw, how exactly does the Hornbill fit into Tata's current portfolio?

Tata mules almost always run on MH12/MH14 plates. Renaults I mentioned don't run MH plates. Simply because their plant is down south. Not in Pune.

I'm curious about the Hornbill placement too. I suspect it will fit parallel to the Tiago Altroz. A full overlap without any exclusive segment price band. Lowest petrol might overlap with some trims of the Tiago/Tigor. Highest will overlap with entry Altroz I think. Considering the H2X is going to be a petrol only offering, it will probably not overshoot the Altroz in pricing. It will be a usual Tata car I think -i.e. by price, it will not exactly fit head to head with any particular competitor segment. Unclear to state if its targeting the WagonR segment or the Baleno segment.

I'm guessing they're going to pull a Mahindra i.e., do what they did with the NuvoSport, KUV 100 etc. (similarly priced, different purposes).

But atleast buyers will have a wider range of cars to choose from, then. A lateral choice, if you will.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Isn't this the entry from Tata to the S-Presso/kwid segment? Yes it goes without saying, considering their positive mentality but i hope they don't cut any corners in terms of safety like the S-Presso does, i don't mind if i have a small touchscreen or if i don't have climate control, safety is top priority and I'm glad it's the same for Tata as well.

Why is this car giving KUV 100 kind of vibes? Is it only me or you guys see the similarly as well? Kind of curvy, high driving position, something similar is there. TATA is going to have a very good 2020 i hope

The H2X definitely looks bigger than Spresso and Kwid, to my eyes. The overall design gives me the vibes of a Panda sized Renegade! This will be a good addition to Tata's portfolio.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Aren't they crowding the segment a bit ? You have got a Nexon, which is also a 4m SUV, so what's the real distinction? At the end of the day, you may give the customer one or more of the following choices: space, comfort, power and luxury(technology). Within a 4m frame, you are highly constrained by price in the first place.

The Hornbill will sit below the Nexon. Pricing should be between the Tiago and the Altroz.

re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

To me, the test mule looks better and more upmarket than the Tiago. The design is also mature (unlike Nexon) and well proportioned.

I think it will sit somewhere in the less crowded Freestyle segment instead of the S Presso/Kwid. Merely looking at the pictures gives me an impression of a 5-8 lakh rupee car. This will kill the Tiago in no time if priced lower than that.

Nexon is in the 7 to 12 lakh price band while Tiago sits between 4.5 to 6.5 lakhs. So Tata Motors has little room to play with in terms of pricing. Looking at their track record of delivering safe vehicles, I'm sure this C SUV will be the only option for safety-conscious buyers. Largely because the "unstable platform" Fords of this price band can not be trusted blindly.

At this stage of comeback, it doesn't make sense for Tata to stoop down to Maruti/Hyundai levels and cut corners to target the <4.5 lakh segment.
