Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

The emphasis on the SUV capabilities of Punch was great. Really impressive presentation on how the Punch reached Sandakphu. Driver skill matters a lot in these tracks and to do that in a FWD, the car should at least be half decent. Looks like a more than capable car. This just might be the car that really improves Tata's prospects in the Indian car market. Excited for the TeamBHP review and the price announcement.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Having the Punch drive to Sandakphu is an interesting choice. Watching this launch and the marketing coming from Tata Motors, I get the feeling this is not going to be a Kwid competitor at all. This is gonna sit, in my opinion, alongside Altroz, just below the Nexon.

Look at the things they have highlighted in the launch video - 'SUV' credentials, high seating, approach and departure angles, 'traction pro' assist, etc.

Look at the names and colours they are using - Pure, Creative, Accomplished, Adventure 'Personas'. Look at the option packs. AMT at launch.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

This is a serious attempt By tata motors to rule the market. The efforts put in show in the final product. The product looks absolutely PUNCH and could prove to be a Knock Out Punch if priced suitably.

If there were any doubts regarding its capabilities , the sandakhpu drive clears it all.

Now eagerly awaiting the review by GTO sir.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

How they price will be the key. I hope they price it sensibly.

Also i just don't get providing rear washer and wiper only for the top end variant. Isn't it more important than the reverse camera

Tata Punch clearly packs a punch ! I'm curious to know if all cars can manage to drive up steep Sandakphu roads. From whatever I've read in travelogues here, only 4×4 cars can manage to reach it. Or am I missing something ?
Also kudos to driving skills of the person taking the FWD car right upto Sandakphu !

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

They are calling the engine "New Gen 1.2 Revotron with Dynapro Technology" claiming that the efficiency is now improved along with better low end torque. Looks like it will be a good city car. Just hope that they have worked on refinement too.

I think that's true as the locals shown in the launch video also said that they have not seen a FWD car reaching that point.

So, the final production version is: Length x Width x Height (mm) = 3827x1742x1615. Wheelbase (mm) = 2445.

Here is a big catch. The Nexon is 1811 mm wide vs 1742 mm of Punch. The HBX concept mentioned 1800mm and such a width would have brought it in the same segment as Nexon itself.

Overall, well done Tata on the product, standard safety features, well specced variants, useful customisation packs. A lot rides on the pricing now.

I think you missed something , it was never going to be a kwid competitor but was always slated to be launched against the kuv 100 and ignis , so yes it just going to be below Nexon.

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

Looks like a great car except for the engine. 0-100 in 16.5s is quite poor imo

Re: The Tata Punch (aka Hornbill) Compact SUV

The engine features what tata calls dynapro. From the launch video, it shows a high forward mounted air intake with very short plumbing with a small bend. They claim this aids low end torque with ram air effect. Interested that they did not reveal power and torque figure. I suspect it to be no better than altroz.

Traction pro is also interesting. In the launch video they claim it will help in low traction situation. It comes only with AMT
