One key takeway from those charts looking at top models - You can't call it old or boring or "same" to buy if you give me something that is either face-lifted or re-platformed and revamped and not only keep the USPs same but try to make the shortcomings better in subsequent models and keep adding features.

Ciaz at 7000 + in the first month after refresh says a lot about the company. How they manufacture and plan inventories for dealers just on time at launch. Customers get early deliveries and the marketing buzz is never lost. Not just Auto companies but everyone launching something new need to learn from this.

The top losers list has some eyewatering numbers.

S-Cross is the greatest loser with >80% sales drop. This is a real blow even considering variant rejig. This sort of drop is expected when a facelift/refresh is around the corner.

Honda should be concerned with the lukewarm response to its updated Jazz. Making too many changes to its international edition has had an impact. Also what is the USP of this car now, compared to i20 or Baleno?

At the rate the C1 stick on boot cars are selling, manufacturers must be scratching their heads and looking for more cars to stick boots onto.

Maybe the Baleno next or the Eureka moment for Fiat,a boot for the Punto? Even the Ameo sales are up.

Jeep Compass needs a diesel automatic badly now.

Just have the feeling that Tata will consolidate 3rd place comfortably over the next year with the Harrier and their new hatchback. Unless off course the Marrazo can sell in big numbers.

The Yaris does not seem to be flying off the shelves. Probably missing a diesel engine. Maybe Toyota should consider a diesel here.

The D1/2 segment is all but gone. The Octavia sells as much as the Corolla. Probably no where in the world does Corolla have to work this hard to earn its bread.

Mean while Honda cars India attained another sales achievement in Aug 2018.

Honda Achieves 15 Lakh Cumulative Sales Milestone In India.

Honda entered the Indian car market with its sedan Honda City in January 1998. Honda reached the first 5 lakh sale milestone in March 2012, which took the company 14 years and 3 months to archives. The next 5 lakh sales (cumulative 10 lakh) was much quicker in October 2015 (3 years 7 months) and the latest 5 lakhs (cumulative 15 lakh) have been the fastest in just 34 months.

The spurt in Ciaz sales could be test vehicle dispatches, so I doubt if we will see such numbers consistently.

The S-Cross has recently got some hefty features and a price update so Maruti may have stopped old ones from being dispatched to the dealers. Next month should correct this aberration. Though I am not sure if the price increase will be well accepted.

Sad to see the Yaris go down in such a way, but its Toyota themselves to be blamed for this debacle. Already see 45k worth discounts in newspapers.

Nissan, VW and Renault now need new products sooner than later.

Honda Jazz face lift has been one of the most unsuccessful face lifts seen in recent memory. Just don\t know why it was done in the first place if new features have to be found using a magnifying glass. Deserves its numbers for trying to fool the public.

Even the new face lifted XUV500 has significant dip this month. Looks like Mahindra needs to get back their aggressive styling back

Last week we ordered two new Boleros. It costs a mind boggling 10 Lacs OTR for a mid model with only AC and power steering!

To any sane mind, it makes no sense to buy such an outdated and cramped vehicle for that price, but as you mentioned, it has no competition.

Our intended use for these vehicles is for our construction site. We have tried many other UVs, but nothing beats the reliability and durability of a Bolero on non-existent roads and tough environment. Spares and service is also dirt cheap (there is noting much to go wrong in the first place). Another factor is that, even after going through the abuse for 5~6 years, it will come out unscathed at the end and still fetch a great resale value.

In my opinion, such high numbers of Ciaz are definitely due to following :

1. In July 2018, the total dispatches were only 48. So, Maruti must have been building stock in July and dispatched in bulk during August.
2. Dealers would have exhausted inventories of older model and were ready to stock again.
3. Test drive cars would have contributed to the overall numbers.

As mentioned by SPARKled, I too doubt if we will see such numbers consistently.

I am quite surprised at the volume of Creta. It is broadly accepted that Creta is overpriced yet the numbers are amazing.
And not a single manufacturer has a car to compete with Creta. Depite Honda, Toyota and VW having capable models in their global portfolio

They wouldn't be worried if the Amaze keeps doing such incredible numbers. But otherwise profitability is surely better with the City. Amaze was not as big a brand as the City and Honda really had to keep the prices competitive against the equivalent Maruti version. However - with the City, the pricing shows the brand power the sub-brand has gained over the years in India.

Three reasons come to mind -

1. Could be due to Maruti concentrating on the Ciaz facelift instead. 2. Also IMO - in the same showroom, Ciaz appears more car for the money now. 3. Dealers were keeping less inventory (I know because a friend booked one this week and the dealer had only one colour in stock) in anticipation for the price increase (Went up by a significant amount yesterday).

A different perspective, but I find the new TUV to be better than the Bolero in all aspects. The engine is a proven one and have seen TUV's [with 80 PS power] done anything between 50 - 100K on odo without much issues. Its infinite times better than the Bolero as far as comfort goes.

The only variant which makes sense in Bolero is the leaf spring one, the EX variant. Abuse it as much as you can.
