September proved to be another tough month for the auto segment. The industry de-grew by ~ 5.4 %.

The muted sales once again attributed to the continued effect of surplus dealer inventory, the Kerala floods resulting in market slowdown, high fuel prices and hike in car prices, etc. Maruti, Tata and Toyota’s are the ones reporting positive growth.

Dealer inventory is the main reason (though as festive season approaches normally dealers pile up inventory in anticipation) for a slow-down as the inventory pile up is huge. For reference, Maruti Dealers inventory shot up-to 40-45 days! (Normal average 30-35 days). The figures also reflect in Honda’s sales as the inventory pile up is the most.

Maruti Suzuki: The dominance continues in almost all segments reflecting in its market share of 52.5%. Nexa contributes to 15.2% Y-O-Y growth taking the overall growth of Maruti Suzuki to a flat 0.7%. Top 6 and a total of 7 cars find its place in the top 10 sales. Maruti is likely to consolidate its performance with its slated Ertiga launch in the coming month.

Hyundai:
Sees a negative growth of 4.5 % reflecting the overall PV market this month. Along with Maruti Suzuki have 3 of its cars in the top ten with Creta being the segment leader in the ‘SUV’ segment.

Mahindra: Has a negative growth of 14.9%. Top performers are Bolero and Marazzo in its initial days help the company to being in the 3rd position this month. Though Marazzo is responsible for keeping Mahindra’s in the 3rd position, it falls short of target sales, falls behind Toyota’s Innova and Maruti Suzuki’s Ertiga. Marazzo is likely to consolidate at ~ 1200 units in the long run.

With lots of new / face-lift launches in October and the impending festival season, the market response needs to be seen if it leads to a market turnaround in October, which is muted as of now.

Should Tata stop producing cars other than Tiago and Nexon ? Hexa is a disaster and not sure if they are making any money at all on them. Looks like new designs are doing good and hopefully it will continue with their new releases.

Nexon beats the Ecosport for the 2nd consecutive month. Good fight this between the two.

City is facing the heat, not only from Ciaz and Verna but also from its younger sibling, the Amaze, especially with the diesel. City not having a diesel AT doesn't help either. With the current pricing a diesel AT isn't practical too. Honda is in catch 22 situation. The WRV seems to be losing steam, from a consistent 4K+ volumes, its down to <3K in 5 of the last 6 months.

Its now safe to tag the Yaris, a dud. With no diesel option and optimistic pricing I don't see it doing 4 figure sales.

While Grand i10, i20 & Creta bring in $$$, the D segment is till a worry for Hyundai. Elantra volumes have dropped. Tuscon too does only 171 units as against the Tiguan, where VW with limited reach has managed 124 units.

After roughly about 18 months, the swift is on top with 22K+ volumes

Kwid & Redigo, A segment, pay the bills for Renault Nissan.

Yaris flops and how!

Last month it barely managed to post a four digit figure, but this month leaves no doubts on its future!

One would have expected Toyota to learn from its past failures (read Etios), but they once again have gone down the same path. Not even the taxi market might be able to save them this time!

A bit harsh, don't you think? Hexa might not bring in the numbers but has helped in brand building.

Fiat, on the other hand, has me going L-O-L.

Looks like Toyota can only sell the Innova and Fortuner successfully in India. Yaris is turning out to be a major flop show. With ~600 units could not even beat the age old Rapid (~900 units) (which is doing very well-considering the age of the model, the manufacturer and the fact that it does not even get the TSI AT). The Vento saved it the embarrassment of finishing last in the relevant C Segmenters.

Good to see both the Tiago and Nexon continue its strong performance. Always heartening to see new models do well in sales and coming from Tata makes it even better.

No surprises of course in the Top 10. I closed my eyes and recited the list before looking at the thread and no surprises that I was right.

Renault seems to have lost the plot a little with the Kwid. No longer hitting those big numbers we saw in the initial stages.

The Honda WRV also seems to have lost steam.Also the Tata Nexon numbers have been consistent at around the 4K mark for sometime now. Which that its not just stocking at dealership levels. The dealer dispatches mirror the demand for the Nexon.

The Nexon has the 2nd position (after Brezza) among sub 4m compact SUV's. Good show. Its a wonderful product, no wonder its been popular.

Optimistic pricing? They have just increased their base price by Rs 54000 . Maybe they wanted to sell only 100 Yaris every month and currently it exceeds their expectation. With increased price, their expectation will be met.

I saw Yaris in Europe recently. It is so much more practical in its hatchback avatar there. I don't how how they can take a good design and then purposefully make it bad. The Indian version does not even look upmarket compared to the European hatchback. What were they thinking pricing it like that!

- Maruti Suzuki outgrows the Industry ( 11 vs 6.9%)

- Hyundai's growth has not risen as product launches were none , awaiting the New Santro?

- Mahindra retains its 3rd position, Tata comes very close with a robust growth rate.

- If Ford's growth is from Ecosport so is Toyota's from Innova.

- Except for FCA due to Jeep, all other global groups are in red.

So all automakers will go for S/CUV's inline with the global trend. VW will start its second innings with them, Ford’s global strategy to kill sedan by 2022.

Love it or Hate it but definitely cannot be ignored it will be a /UV termed car in all segment - Micro/ Compact/ SUV and many more names will be derived too.
