The 3 litre 157/167 bhp motor exists. Unless I'm mistaken this will make it to the new platform while the 2.2 142 bhp will serve the current Dicor platform.

Is this going to be in 2008 or 2010? Any ideas on the dates? I came across an article from June of 2006. They were saying the 2.2L was going to be released by October of 2006. Here we are in March 2007 and no sign of the 2.2L, let alone a new 3L.

But, since we hear Sumo is going to be released with the 2.2L what you say may not be far fetched, although by the time we see all this, it might be 2009 or 2010.

2009...2010.. that i cant speculate that but the new 2.2 and 3.x are going to be euroIV compliant , my guess is by end of nxt quater

sumo and safari are going to share the same engine.. unless tata wants to try and test 2.2 with sumo and then safari..

From Tata Website..quoting
The Sumo and Safari accounted for sales of 5,306 nos., a growth of 41% over February 2006, with Utility Vehicles reporting their highest ever sales for any month. Safari sales at 2009 nos. grew by 258% over last February.

I saw your questions on the other thread, but I'll answer them here. Does it make sense to wait for the 2.2L? Since the 2.2L may either be released tomorrow or next year, it all depends on when you need to to have the vehicle. Cars like computers are getting updated and refreshed constantly, so if you choose to wait you can wait for ever.

I think most of your queries have been answered by long term Safari owners in the other thread. I would suggest that you compile a comparison list between Safari and its competitors.

I would make a remark on (e) though. What is a true blue offroader? Is the LandRover RangeRover a true blue offroader? How about the Toyota 4Runner? Here is a comparison between the Safari and the 4Runner (dimensions and ground clearance only).

Safari (L:W:H:WB:GC) = 4810:1918:1925:2650:195 (Laden)
4Runner SR5 V6 = 4805:1910:1805:2790:230 (Unladen)

I think the Safari favourably compares with the 4Runner and if I recall correctly has a similar 4WD system (2HI, 4HI, 4LO). As you may know Tucson, CRV etc. are all softroaders and don't belong in the same league.

Brake performance from Overdrive road tests:

Tata Safari:
From 100 kmph: 50.32m/3.27s
From 80 kmph: 32.58m/2.78s
Control: V Good
Brake Feel: V Good
Overall Brake Rating: V Good

Ford Endeavour
From 100kmph: 52.83m/3.90s
From 80kmph: 34.49m/2.60s
Control: Good
Brake Feel: Good
Overall Brake Rating: Good

So, the Safari brake performance is better than that of Endeavour even with the added weight.

Amending my previous post, the Toyo 4Runner has a lockable Torsen LSD. Not really sure what the Safari has, but I think all the 4wheels are locked in 4LO and there can be some slip for on road use in 4HI. Can anyone confirm this from the manual? The Endeavour has a LSD too, I think.
