Thanks to the new safety norms coming into effect. If not for that, i'm sure this ALTO would have continued to sell like hot cakes for decades.

Classic example of how law makers can make a difference. Safer vehicles on our roads

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 to be discontinued in 2019

The Alto 800 is the highest selling car, and is an unsafe car, it seems. I wonder what percentage of Altos on the road are involved in significant accidents. I have been driving my Alto 800 for ten years and have taken it on long drives and have not had a single accident yet, touch wood. My ride is comfortable for my frame to the extent that after 12 hours on the road I am as good as fresh, no aches no pains. My last PUC readings were Carbon-monoxide = 0.011% and Hydro-carbons = 110 ppm. Are these readings bad? Just asking.

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 to be discontinued in 2019

Finally the good sense prevails.

Let these new safety and emission norms force MSIL to adopt what is required by law. I also see this as an opportunity for other players to start offering safe entry level products (B1 segment) as they may get some chance to compete in the market (even on the price point), which was not possible earlier as first time buyers were inclined towards Maruti.

These unsafe vehicles (already sold) will still continue to be on the roads for their practicality and easy of maintenance.

I am still concerned about the safety of new Alto because the present generation Swift was able to secure just 2 Stars !

It's indeed a brilliant machine. Affordable, reliable, refined, and frugal with adequate power. Buyers have rewarded Maruti for making the Alto. Unlike the Nano. Sigh!

I believe the cause behind most deaths on Indian roads is driver error. It's almost always the driver, not the car. I'm guilty of once in a while doing some stupid stuff myself. A safer car proves its worth only after coming in a serious contact.

It's simple economics too. It's in Maruti's interest to move up the premium-ness ladder and there hasn't been a better time to do it as the disposable income has grown to insane proportions in India. As a result, buyers are happy to buy bigger cars as their first set of wheels. As Maruti Suzuki, I'd prefer selling half as many Rs. 10 lakh cars than twice as many Rs. 5 lakh cars. With the costlier car, I have half the headache of production, transportation, sale, service traffic, etc. Obviously, there's a bigger profit too. Not to mention, the buyer of a Rs. 10 lakh car is likely to be less demanding than the Rs. 5 lakh car owner. That's one of the reasons why the Alto has remained untouchable for so long.

I hope you don't take it negatively when some members bash the Alto. You not being in a serious accident is a testament to your safe driving habits. The car itself can't match the crashworthiness of an expensive model, like the new WagonR. At least not until some serious amount of cash flows into its research, development, production, and QC, which will eventually bring its cost to new heights.

I did not mean to put the Alto on a pedestal. It has many shortcomings but it certainly does not deserve to be hated. I have the desire to change my chariot and have the money in the bank, but I also LOVE my Alto. I was talking about safety only and not about costs, comforts, and other such matters. I am a geriatric who was once a rash biker and missed being terminated by a hair's breadth. That is why I am now a safe driver. The safest bet is to drive cautiously. I find several young and even old drivers pushing the car in all conditions, which is wrong. One must know when to slow down and when not to cross a certain limit. There is a section in T-BHP that shows pics of accidents. I need not say more. Enjoy your ride and have a safe drive, tschuess.

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 to be discontinued in 2019

Alto K10 has been upgraded with compulsory ABS , driver side airbags and reverse parking sensor. But the price hike is steep. According to NDTV carnbike , the hike is due to strengthening of chassis, so as to meet the crash test.

Don't think the Alto 800 has been discontinued. Here is a new video of a minor facelifted Alto 800 with ABS and other mandatory features:

What's puzzling is that the Alto K10 2019 has only a driver airbag while the Alto 800 2019 has dual airbags.

Can you please share a link of Alto K10 2019 that's shot in March-April 2019? Because if the 800 gets dual airbags then the K10 has to have dual airbags too because the dashboard design now seems to be shared amongst them.

Could be an export model this? As the Alto 800 sold abroad had this dashboard since long ago.

Also notice the badge is only "Alto" and not "Alto 800"

Maybe the document refers to whats standard fitment on the car - driver airbag. The passenger airbag may be on the option variant.

The previous generation alto had it that way - 800 cc variant was called just Alto. The K10 was called the Alto K10. I don't think Maruti is going to allow an export variant onto Indian roads. The dashboard is definitely from a facelift with the stereo taken from lower variants of new Wagon R

Hey bro! Got the link. What you said is indeed true although I don't understand the logic behind this to not give dual air-bags in K10.

Only logical explanation remaining is the Alto 800 shown was a Vxi Option Variant with the passenger airbag as optional and the Alto K10 shown was a Vxi variant with only driver airbag as standard.

There must be a Option Variant on the K10 also with a passenger airbag.
