Skoda, Volkswagen to scout for engine buyers in India

Skoda, Volkswagen to scout for engine buyers in India.

We are not averse to buying and selling of engines. My board (board of director) tells me that if I am able to get customers for engines we will be willing to look at it

The two companies are among the few prominent names in the industry who are looking to sell their engines to competition.

Re: Volkswagen's 1.0L TSI petrol engine to be built in India

Having seen many 1.0 turbopetrols bite the dust, am skeptical of how this will turn out. There was the Ecoboost that made an exit. In the Indian traffic cycle, 1.0 turbopetrols have neither the fuel efficiency nor the performance. Come to think of it; wonder how many Baleno RS's were shipped out in the 5 lakhs Baleno's that were sold??

Uncanny ring to it: All those who bought FIAT 1.3 diesel made a killing except FIAT! Maruti is still milking it dry!

Re: Volkswagen's 1.0L TSI petrol engine to be built in India

VW has tried to get this done in past. They were trying to arm twist Maruti to use their engines instead of FIAT sourced MJD.
Thankfully Maruti understood how good MJD was for the time it was launched in Indian market.

I will be surprised if VW will find engine buyers, specially after the emission scandal. The regulatory risks are much higher now for VW engine powered cars.

Re: Volkswagen's 1.0L TSI petrol engine to be built in India

VW's expertise is in making diesel engines which are dying, sooner than I expected in a country like India. SUV makers like Ford, Toyota and Mahindra don't exactly need technical assistance in building diesels for their UVs.

I don't see this a sustainable way to survive in the market.

Is the Volkswagen group known for its engines, so much so that others would be willing to pay good money for them? The 1.2 and 1.5 diesels are relatively gruff and the corresponding petrols seem to do well only because of the DSG. The 1.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel would be in the low volume segment.

The Tsi engines are still being sold at a premium here, so assumption is that they are not localised 100%.

And the Diesel engines, actually they are good. But when the NGT has slammed a 100 cr penalty for these, which manufacturer would take the risk? No one.

And most of the Indian companies are on the verge of developing turbo petrols, so they will get this right in the next few years. They do not need to buy it from VW, unless the Tsi was heavily localised and low priced, which I dont see as a possibility until 2021, when VW launches new models.

Re: Skoda, Volkswagen to scout for engine buyers in India

Who would buy these engines? Everyone already have their own engines.

They could crash the Mahindra-Ford alliance for petrol engines
They could sell to Peugeot - um - no - Peugeot have tied up to manufacture their own
Perhaps if MG bring in a small car?
Maruti will tell them to get lost
The Renault Rebel alliance? Doubt it
Microlite planes - maybe!

Frankly, there are no takers here as I see it. Most of the takers would sell them a better engine instead!

I think tata wouldn't turn them down, especially for their more premium products. They havent invested too much in higher capacity petrols, and they don't need to, but if they can use some help there, especially in places like delhi where diesels are banned
