Jaguar has launched a special edition of the XJ called the XJ50 to celebrate 50th anniversary of the luxury saloon. It is based on the long wheelbase version and comes with various updates. The XJ50 is priced at Rs. 1.11 crore (ex-showroom).

The XJ50 comes with Autobiography-style front and rear bumpers as well as a chrome radiator grille and gets unique badging on the rear and on the side vents. The car rides on 19-inch wheels. On the inside, the XJ50 features diamond-quilted seats with the Jaguar logo embossed on the headrests and an XJ50 logo on the centre armrest. A truly majestic looking car. I think Jaguar-Land Rover have the best design department.

But almost 1.5 crore rupees for a 10-year old car . Everything about the XJ screams outdated - especially the interiors - and it sure doesn't help that the same generation / car exchanges hands in the used market for as low as Rs. 25 lakhs.

The new S-Class makes the XJ feel like its from the 90's.

Can't agree more, and this is one of the reasons some dealers still have 2017 inventory left (or at least did)! Doesn't help that they are misers with the discount either (the sales person insisted paying Rs. 1.1Cr OTR for an outdated, 2017 stock XJ was a good deal - a little more would get you a heavy discounted 7 series instead).
While the car is classy, it is just too old compared to newer rivals.

If I were JLR, I'd discount the older models heavily and bring in the all new one, as compared to launching a new trim that will in all probability pile up at the dealer yards.

Re: Jaguar XJ50 launched at Rs. 1.11 crore

This is the incarnation twice over from my 2002XJR, the 308 series. After that came the XJR, 350 series and now for the last decade the current XJ.

It is still an iconic car, but it has outlived it's useful life by now. A bit of 50 year birthday branding and batching can't hide that fact, I am afraid.

Latest XF, whilst smaller, does put the XJ in it's shadow on just about every aspect.

We are talking about buying, what is for Jaguar by now, the proverbial cash cow. Make a fast buck without any real investments, before you ditch the model all together.

The earlier XJ have an almost cult type of following. Mine (X308) is only just rising. Wonder if this model will ever reach that sort of legendary XJ status as the earlier models. The X350 will never, as it was universally likened to a pregnant whale. (Still a great car to have if you need to do a lot of driving!)

Re: Jaguar XJ50 launched at Rs. 1.11 crore

Those flowing lines and the luxo-barge length still makes it eye candy. Though the lack of any improvements in the interiors for almost a decade nullifies the love at first sight. Worldwide Jaguar has taken a beating owing to a visually dated fleet and the arrival of the new MB design language. Heck, even the swedes have turned to be a looker (S90,S60, XC90, XC60,V90 et al)
The perceived reliability and the resale are other areas where Jag takes a beating.

Designing an all-new generation uber-luxury sedan loaded with new tech takes up more than just a couple of thousand crores and the fact is, Jaguar is nowhere as cash rich as Mercedes, BMW & VAG-Audi. That's the main reason behind their outdated lineup. Even the current-generation Evoque is based on the 2006 Freelander; that makes the car 12 years old . In 12 years, we have seen THREE all-new generations of cars like the Dzire & City.
