This is something I'm interested in finding out as well. I personally don't think they will create more competition for Celerio. But I have a feeling that the more options there are from their stable, the better chances they have at taking on some of the rivals.

2019 Maruti Wagon R - IAB Rendering

Source

Next-gen Maruti WagonR spied. Edit: Launched @ Rs. 4.19 lakhs-2019marutiwagonrprofilerenderingaf3a.jpeg

Last weekend, IAB presented the first spy shots of the 2019 Maruti Wagon R. Using all the details available, our artist Shoeb Kalania has penned an immaculate rendering to give the most precise view yet of the upcoming model.

Currently, the Maruti Wagon R is about maximum practicality at economical prices, with design and styling not playing defining roles. However, the Kei car-inspired entry-level model is looking to change things a bit with the lifecycle makeover.

Like the outgoing model, the new generation has a short hood, large windscreen, large windows, noticeably short rear overhangs and tiny wheels pushed out for achieving maximum usable space. The thin black garnish on the C-pillar is an interesting touch, purposed to give a floating-roof look.

At the front, 2019 Maruti Wagon R has a shorter bonnet, new headlamps and a new grille. At the rear, the redesigned vertical tail lamps stretch out slightly to the sides. The new tail lamps are somewhat reminiscent of the 2018 Maruti Ertiga. Inside, one can expect a several new comfort and convenience features, including a touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone connectivity.

The new generation model rides on an upgraded version of the outgoing model’s platform, and not the Heartect as in Japan because that would shoot up the price. The 1.0-litre petrol and petrol-CNG engines should continue, with minor performance and efficiency refinements. A pure electric variant should follow in 2020, becoming the company's first EV in the country.

Maruti Suzuki has started a promotional campaign for the Wagon R with videos in the same way Hyundai did for its all-new Santro, reminding customers of the car’s history and the emotions attached to it. Expect pre-orders to open after the new year and the market launch in the first quarter of 2019.

Rumour: WagonR to get 1.2L engine on ZXi variant

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this page!

Next-gen Maruti WagonR spied. Edit: Launched @ Rs. 4.19 lakhs-wagonr1.jpg

The next-generation WagonR is rumoured to get a new top-spec ZXi variant along with an automated manual transmission (AMT) variant called the ZXi AGS. We have also learned that a new 1.2-litre engine could be offered in the ZXi variant, while the base LXi and VXi variants are likely get the same 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder unit that powers the present model. A 5-speed manual transmission and a 5-speed AMT are likely to be offered in the ZXi and ZXi AGS variants respectively.

Media reports suggest that the new WagonR will be based on the same platform as the current model. It will get a redesigned exterior featuring large wraparound headlamps, new grille and bumpers. At the rear, the car gets vertically stacked tail lamp clusters. It is also expected to come with refreshed interiors.

Maruti Suzuki is likely to launch the next-generation WagonR on January 23, 2019.

Wow. If that's the case, I would be happy to replace my Wagon R with the new ZXi AGS. Inspite of having the car for nearly 7 years, my only grouse has been the poor 1.0L engine which is a pain to drive in bumper to bumper traffic. 1.2L K series is a gem of an engine. I've been looking at the Ignis but if Wagon R gets the 1.2L engine, I'll happily take it. I'll be more than happy if Maruti launches a proper hybrid variant, not pure electric one.

Now, that's indeed a good news if the rumour happens to be true!

A powerfull Wagon R with all its existing advantages can find lot of buyers who otherwise are discontented with poor 1.0 litre K10B engine.

Would be too much to ask a wider body also?

A 1.2 Wagon R will cannibalise the sales of Ignis due to its usable, practical and rugged nature!

A 1.2L Wagon R will not only cannibalize Ignis, it will be a threat to lot of other entry level hatchbacks and even could draw in few premium hatchback customers if comfort and safety features are relatively okay.

The bonnet does have a more upright stance than the current model as well. The wing mirrors are brand new and appear to have been taken from Ignis. The side profile is more dynamic than the outgoing Wagon R with wheel arches swooping inwards while the signature tall pillars are retained to maintain the unique silhouette

The tail lamps are moved up and repositioned on the pillars adding more glitter to the overall package. A roof-integrated spoiler with high mounted stop lamps could be offered in the top-end variants. The upcoming Wagon R is based on the same platform but appear to have been altered to become wider and longer than usual for allowing more occupant space and luggage volume.

Updates to the dashboard and centre console are expected to accompany new features like SmartPlay touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a long list of standard safety features to comply with upcoming stringent norms.

re: Next-gen Maruti WagonR spied. Edit: Launched @ Rs. 4.19 lakhs

If it's really a 1.2L Wagon R, then it's probably a 7 seater too. I am sure MSIL just won't give us the better engine because they can. Current gen Wagon R doesn't have any direct competition, and is selling in good numbers. So, only reason I see for a possible engine upgrade would be that MSIL wants it to be a 7 seater.

First impressions... It looks ugly in these pictures. I always thought the WagonR was a nice-looking boxy car. The Japanese version of the 6th gen WagonR looks fantastic and breaks new ground. This one looks more like the TUV300 than the iconic WagonR.

YAAYY.!!! Something worthy to replace our 10 year old F10D waggie, instead of that gutless 1.0l one.

DUH !!! The styling. Looks likes a three year old Mahindra design.

Willing to give it benefit of doubt, since the images are edited and looks like it has some camouflage on.

But overall looks still poor. The JDM WagonR had three whole different front end styling, yet Maruti chooses to botch it up.

Hope they atleast launch the 2020 WagonR EV as it is, instead of this one.

Looks down right ugly! I hate the rounded edges and everything about it! Why doesn't Maruti give us the one that's available in Japan and else where, like the one depicted here?

re: Next-gen Maruti WagonR spied. Edit: Launched @ Rs. 4.19 lakhs

The photos are authentic as per my sources. And the Wagon-R will come in 1.0 L and 1.2L Avatars. There will be no great technological leaps as expected. A touch screen is anyways now hygiene and will make it to the Wagon-R. But boy, the car has grown in size.

re: Next-gen Maruti WagonR spied. Edit: Launched @ Rs. 4.19 lakhs

If not at launch, Maruti will surely give us a 7 seat version of this. We have the GO+ and the new Renault MPV coming in this 'compact MPV' segment. Maruti knows that if Datsun can sell 600-800 units per month (majorly in Tier-2 and 3 cities), they can sell 10 times more given their brand and network reach in sub Tier-I cities. Availability of a 1.2 engine hints at this only as the GO+ also features a 1.2 engine and Maruti already has that gem in its stable.
