November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the November data.

A repeat story of October sales with more woes, almost all manufactures show a negative growth with expectations to Honda and Mahindra which shows a growth of 10 and 1 % respectively. Top 5 OEMs have registered a positive Market Share growth; while the rest of the OEMs have declined!

The effect to continue to the rest of the year, but manufactures announces price hike for next year citing increase in input costs and rupee effect increasing the import costs.

Six Maruti Suzuki cars and 4 Hyundai cars that cover the top 10 cars register 1.44 lakh units in sales.

Maruti Suzuki: Despite the new release of Ertiga, still the company de-grew by 0.3 %, but manages to increase its market share to ~ 55 % (y-o-y). Leading in most segments, sees its mass market product Alto trailing at nr. 4 in the best sellers of Nov. Retains 6 of its cars in the top 10 cars of Nov but loses one slot to the second largest manufacturer. Dzire – the king of the compact sedans shows strong figures and seem to be growing stronger leaving the second in that segment far behind. New launches like Wagon R, Alto and its Futrure S are cars that will strengthen the mass market segment which shows a drooping growth as of now.

Hyundai:
Despite the hype of the new launch Santro, unable to hold the company to a positive growth. The highlight of the month is Santro cruises along and enters the top 10, but in the process cannibalizes part of Grand i10 and entire Eon.Products like its compact SUV will be the highlight and most anticipated product being awaited in 2019.

Tata Motors: Reaches the top 3, taking the position that was previously held by Mahindra. Tiago, Nexon and Tigor are the main contributors for this. However there is a worry here - Its M/Suv Hexa reaches a new low and this could be haunting while pricing the Harrier.

Mahindra: Though shows a positive growth it has to worry on its low sales on – KUV, TUV and XUV. Marazzo dips a bit and could be the Ertiga effect. Curious to see how XUV will be affected once the Harrier is launched. Mahindra will be looking for bettering its numbers once its compact SUV is launched. Will be interesting to see the effect in sales when Ford cars are being sold alongside its products.

Honda: The only company which shows a double digit growth in November. But with no great numbers the growth comes as a result on the low base numbers in Nov-17. Lots to worry for Honda – drastic drop in Amaze sales, City still selling below Ciaz, drop in almost all cars except Jazz , marginally up from Oct-18.

Toyota : Yaris can be declared the flop launch of 2018. Innova and Fortuner are their key products with Etios twins in the supporting role and able to hold the company in the 6th position .

Ford/Fiat/VW/Skoda and the rest: Massive double digit de-growth with no sustainable products seen in the near future, will see them in the lower end of the chart as seen today.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Total vehicles sold in Nov 17 compared to those in Nov 18, is higher for almost every car maker. And it's been persistent since the last three months so no idea where things will bottom out.

We've been having discussions related to the slowdown in auto sector in other threads, but seeing these graphs with every trend pointing downwards makes the reality much more stark!

Just three models look an exception: Swift, Dzire and Ertiga. All refreshed models backed by a strong brand. It seems the timing could not have been better for Maruti.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Thanks Aditya for the monthly sales figures and analysis for the month of November 2018.

Few observations from my side -

1. As speculated, November 2018 seems one of the worst festive months in the recent years and the worst performing month of 2018.

2. M&M, Tata, Toyota, Ford, Renault, Datsun, Nissan posted their lowest monthly sales last month, while Hyundai, Honda and VW posted their second lowest month of 2018 leading to the abysmal november month sales.

3. However, November was a relatively good month for MSIL which has achieved its second best ever market share with 54.62% (the best ever was 55.5% achieved during Apr 2018).

4. Creta has fallen below 10K mark for the first time after the launch of facelift. Likewise, i20 posted it's lowest sales month since the launch of facelift. Verna's 2nd lowest month since the launch of new generation and Xcent's lowest ever monthly sales (barring the launch month) since its launch in Mar '14.

5. Grand i10 has fallen below 10K mark after a pretty long time, Apr 2016 to be precise when it last sold below 10K units. May be the impact of new Santro launch. However this coupled with all the above mentioned 4 car's numbers pulled down Hyundai's November monthly sales considerably.

6. On the other hand, MSIL is on a roll capturing the Top 6 positions and Swift has again the best selling vehicle after September. Alto has been relegated to 4th position by the "Heartect" trio of Swift, Dzire and Baleno.

7. Celerio has lost the position to Santro which has entered the Top-10 position in its 2nd month of the launch helping Hyundai to have 4 cars in the Top-10. Santro, Celerio and Tiago has occupied the 10, 11, 12 positions in that order.

8. Surprise numbers from City, considering that even the facelifted Ciaz is struggling to post 4K numbers.

9. TUV 300 has tanked below 1000 units for the first time since its launch in Sep '15 and the Nov '18 numbers includes the TUV 300+ as well, which is indeed a big worry for M&M.

10. Nexon is doing 4K+ monthly sales consistently and has beaten the established Ecosport 4 months in a row now. If only the market could give a thumps up for its 5-star GNCAP rating received recently, this could well do the 5 digit sales.

11. Amaze has come down below 5K levels and may settle down at these levels in the future. Aspire's facelift is not helping it to garner sales.

12. Alturas have an average entry, similar to what CRV managed last month. However, going by the skeptism around the price for this vehicle, not sure whether if it could sell atleast 100 units per month.

13. Even the mighty Fortuner and Innova had a dull month relatively - both having lowest sales month of 2018. Infact, Fortuner's lowest sales month, since the new generation launch, except for the GST introductory month.

14. XUV 500 have also registered its lowest sales month ever, barring its launch month of Sep 2011 when it moved just 505 units (that must be just a partial monthly sales). Hexa too registered its lowest ever sales month since launch.

15. The new Ertiga off to a very good start and considering the buzz around the launch this could very well do numbers above 6K units consistently.

16. Marazzo maintaining its good volumes and its unique positioning between Ertiga and Innova may well bring in volumes for this MPV. Hope, the market take note of it's 4 star rating in GNCAP testing.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

It may be little early but I think Toyota will be under pressure on both of its cash cows- Fortuner & Innova, due to some of the new products from Mahindra and acceptability of Endeavour. Besides, newer launches from Tata like Harrier may also eat into some sales. This can be an extremely worrisome situation for Toyota and Lexus probably. They will have to rethink about 4% price increase that they are trying from January 1st.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

  • Datsun - Have to try something new now, sales are falling. I think the facelifted Go and Go+ are to be introduced soon, but I wish they concentrated more on RediGo.
  • Fiat - Getting ready to shut shop I guess
  • Ford - Overall fall in sales for almost all models.
Facelifted Aspire lagging behind competitors in spite of being a good value offering, while Freestyle offers segment leading (?) safety but still finds limited number of (informed & enthusiastic?) buyers
  • Honda - Amaze sales falling, and IMO should settle around 5000 +-250 numbers. Brio is due to be phased out. BRV needs updates and a rejig of features / rationalization of trims. WRV needs a AT box and with that has the potential to do atleast 1000 more. Other models doing normally as is.
  • Hyundai - Major drop across all models except santro. Hyundai should also do a price, feature and trim rationalization across it's portfolio.
The company however should not have any issues discontinuing Eon as Santro is doing more than double the numbers of Eon.
  • Jeep - steady numbers for quite a few months, but what next?
  • Mahindra - Major drop across all models in the portfolio. Needs to do a portfolio rationalization ASAP and only have Alturas, Bolero, Marazzo, Scorpio, Thar, TUV and XUV. Snip all the rest.
  • Maruti - New Ertiga starting strongly. Dzire / Swift sees a major uptick. Last hurrah for Gypsy? Scross & Alto the only losers this month. Rest of the models doing as is.
  • Nissan - Consulting with FIAT as on how to effectively down the shutter
  • Renault - Duster sales falling, Captur sales next to nothing, Lodgy is practically selling next to nothing - only Kwid is keepting Renault's nose above the water. Question is - for how long?
  • Skoda - Seems to be satisfied with a <1% market share fringe player
  • Tata - Another manufacturer needing a portfolio rationalization. Hexa, Nexon, Storme, Tiago, Tigor needs to stay. Sumo needs to be reinvented. Rest needs to go.
  • Toyota - Negative MoM throughout the portfolio. Yaris flopping should have hit them hard if not for double buoys in the form of Fortuner & Crysta
  • VW - Seems to be satisfied with a <1% market share fringe player like it's Czech sibling

What I have heard from Ignis buyers, is that the AMT coupled with the 1.2 engine on Ignis is certainly one of the better engine + AMT gearbox matches.
Also, the chassis is quite stable. Request you to take a test drive both in the city (bumper to bumper traffic) & highway, and then take a decision.

Is the Toyota Camry discontinued? There were zero dispatches and the Toyota website doesnt have the model listed either.

As per below post from Volkman on another thread, it might be replaced with the New Camry.

Re: November 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

@ balechaparka

Did you consider the new Santro. I too am planning for the same and after driving the Ignis and the Santro both me and my wife felt that the Santro has better drivability and I checked with the sales person who said some colours can be made available in a week. I test rode it from Trident on airport road just in case you are interested as I noticed you are from Bangalore too.

They deserved some serious competition which they have now. IMHO the Fortuner and Innova have been overpriced for what they offer. May the customer win in a competitive market
