Overdrive tests the Ciaz 1.5L diesel:

Quote:
The refinement and smoothness is apparent as soon as you turn the engine on. The 1.5 sounds a lot quieter at idle in comparison to the 1.3, with significantly lesser clatter. Start driving and the quietness continues, as engine noise is a lot lesser. The Ciaz does not have the quietest cabin in its segment but the Ciaz 1.5 sounded a lot quieter on the go than I expected, which is quite impressive. It also tells us how much effort has gone into the engine's development, particularly in terms of refinement. In fact, the engine in the Ciaz 1.5 feels as refined as the Hyundai Verna's 1.6, which is pretty much the benchmark in the segment in terms of refinement.

That said, the Ciaz 1.5 sprinted to 100kmph from standstill in 11.84 seconds, which is very impressive and over a second quicker than the 1.3's time of 13.2 seconds in our previous tests.

Any news whether this engine will be introduced in the S Cross. Eagerly waiting but hearing conflicting things about the same. Some are saying that it will be introduced soon others are saying it will not come till 2020 and still others are saying there is a 1.5 Petrol engine in the works for the SCross.

That's very good timings for 95 PS / 225 NM car. 5 HP gain compared to 1.3 MJD looks insignificant on paper, but Suzuki 1.5 DDIS has flat torque curve and peak torque is held for longer revv band , the reason behind excellent drivability and better timings. A friend / Magazine editor has managed to do 0-100 in 10.8 seconds . ( V-Box )

I had the great opportunity to test drive the Ciaz and the Ertiga with the new 1.5 litre diesel engine developing 94 BHP and 225 NM of torque. Following are my observations
1. Though the gear box for both are the new six geared ones and work very well, on both of them I found that they felt notchy and not butter smooth as I have experienced on other Maruti gear boxes like the one on a Ignis that I drove extensively. It's NOT a deal breaker though. It's just a relative assessment
2. The engine feels brilliant and revvs very well. Is a very positive feeling compared to the earlier Fiat sourced 200 DDIS engine
3. Though the Ertiga (1800 Kgs GVW) is heavier than the Ciaz (1590 Kgs GVW) by a good 210 kgs at the gross level, the feeling in terms of performance isn't seriously blunted
4. Having an earlier generation Ertiga, the drive quality of the new Ertiga is leagues ahead. The new shock absorbers are simply too good. Not connected to the new diesel engine but the feeling of wowness had to be shared 😊

This short video review is unique. I liked it.

Few points related to hardware:

1. Garrett GT12XX turbo
2. Bosch fuel injection
3. Bosch EDC17 ECU
4. Resonators in air intake to reduce noise
5. EGR system is located at front of engine and easier to clean unlike 1.3 MJD

Thanks for sharing the video , very short and crisp explanation. However all the videos that I have seen till now on this Ertiga 1.5L Diesel thread show the 1.5L Diesel in a Ciaz. Has anyone been able to get hold of a video of the 1.5L Diesel in an Ertiga. Need to know how the Ertiga drives with this new heart

Mod Note: Our 1.5L Engine Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!
