Today’s Deccan Herald has the advertisement of the Ciaz 1.5L diesel on the front page. Guess it’s not an extremely soft launch after all.

Where is that significant number you're talking about?

I have been misunderstood. My comparison wasn't with the Honda or Fords - I only mentioned the Honda and VW because BHPian Durango Dude had made a blanket statement that Hyundai is the only one that sells a proper non-AMT system.

The torque figures are more for the Ciaz than the Honda diesel, but the power figures are lesser. Also the Peak Torque Band is from 1500-2500 RPM.

However, the benchmark in this segment would be the Hyundai Verna which churns out 260Nm and 126PS from a 1.6 Diesel mill. If one were to say that 100cc makes a massive difference, then by that logic, 5PS would too. Also, the Verna And Rapid churn out 250Nm and 108 BHP each and they have 1.5 Diesels. Those are the significant numbers I'm talking about - the numbers I hope many manufacturers aspire to touch.

Anyway, all that is besides the point, which would be that I feel Maruti's new engine outputs just a few PS more. I feel Maruti is playing it safe here, with a conservative tune, and we as consumers should be wary about that.

This is a Straw Man argument that misses the point of my post, which was to prevent readers from thinking that Hyundai are the only ones who offer non-AMT systems.

Cheers!

I wouldn't touch this engine personally till the first batch does 100k-150k km. IINW, this is Suzuki's first 4 cylinder diesel. Even a much bigger company like Honda with much better engineering capability had issues like hydrostatic lock in its initial batches of diesel engines. Suzuki has lesser experience with diesels than what Tata has with petrol. I'd just stick with the tried and tested 1.3 for the peace of mind. It can also be serviced at any FNG these days and parts availability shouldn't be a problem too. 1.5 could have been considered if it appealed to the heart. With just 6 PS and 25 Nm, it doesn't and is not worth the risk IMO.

While you guys are still not convinced about the power delivery, I am damn sure that this is actually the engine which can make people queue outside the dealerships.

Why so?

The 1.3 had only one issue, the low end. Ciaz is a way lighter car than City, Verna or Vento, don't go by power or torque; look at power to weight or torque to weight and anyone will understand that we have:

The peak torque comes into play at 1500 rpm itself, that means you will have the engine delivering enough of the torque at a mere 1200-1300 rpm itself.

What different does it make?
On a hilly road, driving a Ciaz 1.3 meant only heavy footed drive, those days are gone for good now. You have an engine with 6 cogs, means more closely packed gear ratios. Hence, you get better power usability out of an engine which has already got a better power delivery.

Where will this come into use?
How many of use have done 0-100 more than 10 times in last one year? Haha, this car will give what Indians want. You have peak torque right at 1500 rpm guys, c'mon; what else you want out of a turbo diesel? We have been lauding the drivability of VAG engines, Maruti has provided the same in a softened manner.

I want to drive this engine once and I am sure that this is the engine which will prove to be the most driveable in the city and crowded highway conditions. The sixth cog will take care of expressways.

  • The car with a wonderful power to weight ratio, probably equal to city and second to only Verna
  • The car with best torque to weight ratio

I agree. What is often forgotten is that Maruti has a huge benefit from the fact that their cars are light weight. This ensures that they can extract sprightly if not excellent performance from engine with seemingly mediocre power and torque values. This is best illustrated by the performance of the DDiS 1.3L in the Swift and the Punto.

I am looking forward to checking out the new 1.5 Ciaz diesel. I hope they plonk this into the S-Cross and the Brezza too.

Drive on,
Shibu.

I'm eagerly waiting for its Dealer walk-around review or any media review. Still haven't came across anyone yet.

Had a very short drive in Ciaz 1.5L diesel. Recorded the engine sound with hood open. Too loud in the video, but wasn't that bad with the hood closed. Was audible from within the car though. Very similar to 1.3L DDIS in terms of engine sound, couldn't feel much difference.

I expected it to be a bit more silent, not sure if it will be after running in. My short spin in just the first 3 gears didn't help check out much in terms of drive-ability, etc. Given the car wasn't registered, drive was within the yard.

Awaiting a long test drive to see if the new Ertiga will be worth considering, given the slightly higher CC engine & 6 speed Transmission, my 2 main complaints with our Ertiga.

No visible change outside to differentiate 1.5L. Had to search for the car with 6 speed gear-shifter to find this one out of the many other variants.

ACI reviews the Ciaz -DDiS 225,

Quote:

Maruti has pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the new 1.5 diesel Ciaz, and it has turned out to be far better than expected, considering Suzuki’s lack of experience with diesel technology.

The new engine is remarkably refined, has sufficient punch and lives up to Maruti’s tradition of offering the best-in-class fuel efficiency. The 1.5 diesel Ciaz feels more polished and takes the fight to its arch-rival’s doorstep – the Honda City

Looks like they have a winner on their hands as per the ACI Review...
  1. Class Leading Mileage
  2. Class Leading 0 to 100 kph acceleration [Unexpected from a Maruti :D]
  3. NVH Levels as per the review is very good
  4. BS VI Compliance Assured Next Year

Above all this is the most value for money car in the segment which ticks most of the boxes. Let us hope they throw in a Diesel Automatic to really turn the heat on!

Class leading acceleration followed by class leading mileage with good NVH levels should be the right order of interpretation. This car may run out of steam too soon, I only hope that initial acceleration from 0-100 kmph is adequately supported by the braking system.

Took a longish TD of the New 1.5L Diesel Ciaz:

Notable points:

1. The refinement is shocking. It surprises specially when you don't have much expectation because of the all aluminium construction(i-Dtec anyone?) and the memory of Maruti's First attempt, the Celerio diesel. Listen to the videos, keeping in mind the exaggeration factor of mobile cams. Even then the refinement looks good.

2. Bottom end torque and driveability is excellent. Simply release the clutch and this car starts accelerating briskly. With little accelerator input, this thing can potter around town whole day long.

3. Turbo is very linear, kicks nicely at 1700 rpm and pulls all the way till 4500rpm. Even at 5000 rpm the engine still has some grunt. Power band is large and the car picks up speed in no time. Autocar India's claim of this being the fastest midsize sedan looks possible.

4. Some vibration creeps through clutch pedal at higher rpms.

5. Engine NVH is completely sorted and if any noise reaches you first, it's the tyre noise.

6. Tappet cover is made of plastic.

During the TD I was impressed. I have driven quicker diesels like the S Cross 1.6. But the maturity this engine shows, its impressive!

During the entire TD, this thought was in my mind: Honda rushed in to call their Diesel as "Earth Dreams". This Suzuki diesel engine is as perfect as it can get.

NVH? Check!
Bottom end? Check!
Quick enough? Check

I won't comment on how quick it is, will leave that for Dr. Naren to time it. lol:
