You can always turn the system off. In city condition, it would be ideally kept off.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Well

I was one among the bold few who bought the first generation of XUV. In fact mine was among the first 10 cars in Bangalore.

Quirkiness, niggles apart. I had big time issues like Braking, clutch, wheel alignment to name a few. New technologies aside, let them get the basics right.

I have sold my car about a year ago. In the market now for a replacement. Delayed due to Covid.

Will I consider the next gen 500?

Emphatic NO

Exactly! That ability to turn off the system is key in Indian conditions.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Found this video on youtube, I am not sure if the video is in FF mode or if the car is doing some really good speeds, but at 0.30 the car does go like a rocket. Eagerly waiting for this car

The upcoming 2nd-gen XUV5OO spotted testing in Manali.
This Instagram video is from the perspective of a Ford Endeavour.

By looking at the rear door handle, we can see how the pop out mechanism is going to be like - it looks similar to the Tesla Model 3, albeit forward hinged.

Seems a bit too much for a mid-size SUV/Crossover . Hope it turns out to be user friendly and reliable. Good luck Mahindra!

But does one put it back inside, once the passenger/driver has entered the car?
IMO it looks ugly, if it is left in that unhinged position.

This one crack me up! I hope that it goes back inside automatically.

The first romours talked about the car getting Range Rover Velar kind of door handles.

This Velar one looks better IMO

I think it will fall back to place when the door is closed . Some mechanism will probably be triggered when the door shuts which will put it back.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

I can't help but wonder how many XUV5OO are we eventually going to see with either the door handle jutting out, or jammed in such that you can't open the door.

My 2018 XUV5OO's "paw" style was dated - but then a regular, modern handle can do the job just fine. Why innovate in an area like this when they can divert the bandwidth elsewhere, making the car niggle-free from the word go?

The user can switch it off when not required (will reactivate based on use case design). Also, being worked on ADAS(not in Mahindra) a bit myself, I can tell you that all the use cases are studied and safety is ensured, for example, when the lane keep assist is in operation, if the driver wants to take control he can just be steering the wheel where he wants to.
The system senses the driver's intent by measuring torque applied by the driver (if >50Nm - this value is from regulation requirement ECE R79), the system deactivates and driver is in control and feedback will be on the instrument cluster that the system is not active anymore.

Anyone wants to know a bit more about ADAS: refer UNECE R152 for Autonomous Emergency Braking System, R79 for Autonomous Emergency Steering and Lane Keep Assist/Lane Departure Warning. I can also try to help you guys on specific queries (within my knowledge level).

P.S: There are no regulatory requirements mandating ADAS in India. The OEs follow UNECE regulation and NCAP requirements for designing the systems.

Did they (including JLR) get inspired from these old school locks?

I liked to play with them as a kid.

The flappy part of the flap type door handle can be made flush fit too.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Hope Mahindra over-engineers the plastic door handles keeping in mind the harsh Indian operating conditions!

The idea is not very radical as several cars over the years , particularly, in the 70's used to have such mechanical "pop-out" outer door handles. Yes, in India it'll have its novelty value for sure!
I am just waiting to see the marketing spiel that will be cooked up by Mahindra's PR & Marketing division to describe these handles! Am sure these handles will ensure an added 0.10-bhp and 0.001 faster from rest to 100kmph as it will have less of an aerodynamic drag!

In Comedians Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld, he had a BMW 507 from 1957 that had the pop out handle. The car itself was beautiful.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Personally I don't trust Mahindra to do the door handle thing flawlessly.
Bound to have niggles, and more like a problem they could do without.

But no one can argue the novelty of it. And it is the XUV500 we are talking about. Something imparting character should be there. For every 10 out of 100 customers who may face niggles regarding the door handles, there would be 90 out of 100 customers who would be delighted to use such a cool feature. Let alone, the on-lookers and public who would be awestruck by seeing the door handles pop out and in.
Definite brownie points for desirability.

Pop out handles have been there even before the 1950s, but am pretty sure the above example is of a horizontal placed ordinary flap door handles. Most used in 70s British cars, Soviet GAZ and American AMC models.
