Should we opt for the manual transmission, even though it means going down the value ladder and, importantly, giving up most of the airbags. We have been happy with the manual transmission (there was a huge wait for the AWD when we bought, which was just as well). My son and I are both happy hypermiling, and have been consistently getting 13-15 kmpl from the diesel engine in the city, over 20 on highway drives (though the software is not calibrated beyond 18). Now the question is whether we should consider the Automatic. Having never driven an automatic, I worry about both response and fuel efficiency.
My experience is not exactly relevant as I drive a petrol AT SUV. But trust me, an AT box is a great stress reducer and just as much fun to drive. And the classical torque convertor gearboxes help in masking the initial lack of low end torque. Of course you will pay a penalty in lowered fuel economy. That is a trade off you should be prepared to make.

Is this the case even today? Is the difference in fuel economy that noticeable with newer engines and smarter tech?

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

How long after the launch should we expect a first refresh? With Mahindra's penchant for throwing in an entire cartload of bells and whistles, I expect a lot of little irritants, so may hold off till a refresh fixes all or most of those.

The downside, of course, is that the longer I wait, the lower the price of my present XUV500 will drop.

For a torque convertor AT gearbox there will always be a lower fuel economy vis a vis the same car & engine with a manual gearbox.
Newer CVT gearboxes are claiming better economy figures vis a vis manual. I suspect it is done by making the overall performance quite dull.
Depreciation is the highest cost of owning a car. A 1-2 kmpl difference in fuel economy can be justified by the lesser stress to you knee and general convenience. And if you want to row the gears occasionally go for a tiptronic equipped gearbox.

2021 Mahindra XUV5OO to get panoramic sunroof at launch, mild-hybrid tech later:

pictures show the full-LED headlamps, compact grille, double-spoke alloy wheels, and much more of the 2021 Mahindra XUV500, the feature worth noting is the panoramic sunroof. Like the new 2021 MG Hector, the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will include a dual-pane panoramic sunroof in select configurations.
Quote:
the 2021 Mahindra XUV500 will reportedly come with Advanced Driver Assistant System or ADAS for new-age active driver assistance functions. Spy shots show the test mule featuring a black rectangular part in the lower grille, and that’s probably a millimetre-wave radar. There’s probably a front camera placed near the interior rear-view mir
Quote:
Mahindra partnered with Mando, a South Korean company, for sourcing ADAS in April 2019. The supplier had announced that the Indian automaker has ordered front radar and front camera required in Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), a safety feature the Indian government wants to make obligatory by 2023.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Unless Mahindra goofs up bigtime, I can see this car absolutely dominating the Safari and further dent the already falling sales of Innova. With highlights like the 185 BHP diesel engine, full LED lights, digital instrument cluster, panoramic sunroof(and I am pretty sure many more) etc., I can sense a block buster as long as the pricing is kept within acceptable limits.

Go on Mahindra, offer us a well rounded package with even feature distribution between the variants, something which Tata couldn't do.

Wow!! The next gen XUV sure looks a complete package. If Mahindra fixes the NVH, electronics, ride quality they have a winner at launch.

Assuming that the XUV is set to be launched in April at the earliest, M&M still have ample time to add any new features by judging the way the public reacts to the Safari, which will commence deliveries by February end imo.

Also, they must have surely learnt from the first gen launch back in 2011, that the public just won't accept a product with niggles and faults. They need to get it right from the get go. That and given the time they've spent in testing the vehicle rigourously, like you said, the only thing which can bring the XUV down is Mahindra themselves. The XUV has always been priced aggressively, so I have high hopes from Mahindra in that regard.

The ball is in your court, Mahindra.

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

XUV500 2nd gen should have below features to win the race:

Safety:
1) Min. 6 airbags
2) NCAP test results before launch (>=4)
3) ABS
4) ESP
5) Front/Rear parking camera & sensors
6) Hill assist

Comfort:
1) Front ventilated seats
2) Spacious 3rd row with decent leg & head room
3) At least 350L storage space (good enough for a 4-member family on a week trip with min. luggage)
4) Cooled glove box

Value For Money features:
1) TPS
2) Utilitarian boxes like the space utilized in an aircraft (you can't see an 1*1 wasted!)
3) Cruise control
4) Steering mounted audio controls
5) Easy to remove a/c filters (to help self serve cleaning)

I've not mentioned about core things like Engine, Specs like Ground clearance, Mileage as these are the primary criteria which assumed should be at par with competitors or above.

*Sunroof: Not sure how many of it find it useful, frequency of its usage and being a necessity or not which is debatable and hence left it from my scope.

thanks

Re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

The interest for this has heated up thanks to the interest generated by the Safari. XUV500 vs Safari would be the battle to become the kind of the jungle.

I think the earlier spy pics with the headlight exposed had a halogen setup. This looks like an all LED unit, probably one of the top two variants. So, the layout inside the cluster must be different. Just a guess.

Even with the camouflage on, you can tell that the XUV's front end has an aggressive look to it. Hopefully it brings back some of the muscular character of the very first version.

Absolutely no update to this thread in the last week Wonder what's cooking at Mahindra towards the launch activities. Any insider information? Safari hype seems to have settled now
