re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Looks lovely and ICE looks Seltos inspired.

I am liking the looks of Flat Bottomed steering.

But a noob question, what exactly is the benefit of having one ?

Loved the flat bottom steering wheel, even if it does look odd in a family crossover.

Same goes with the pull type door handles. I cannot recall any other car in this segment or even 3 segments above it which has this feature. I am sure this will add to the WOW factor, even if it is a bit inconvenient to use.

The touch screen and instrument console does look like it's been inspired from the Seltos, but I think that is just a coincidence since the KIA is a new entrant in the market.

I hope the dials are all digital, this will be another WOW factor.

M&M will surely add a lot of bling to the new XUV, but I genuinely hope they add more power and sort out the ride and handling.

A flat bottom steering wheel frees up a bit more legroom for the driver as compared to a round one. This is particularly useful in a race car whose steering and seats are fixed. So the driver can easily manoeuvre himself in and out of the car. Apart from this another advantage is that the driver can easily know if the steering wheel is straight or not.

A flat bottom steering wheel doesn't serve any useful purpose as such in a road car apart from making the steering feel a bit more sporty and racy.

In fact the round steering wheel turns (self centering) nicely when released after taking a turn.

As per this article in ET Mahindra to continue selling existing XUV500 and Scropio along side the new ones.

Quote:
Mahindra, like in the past, will continue to offer the existing generation of the Scorpio and XUV 500 to cater to different price brackets, even after launching the new versions next financial year.

If this is true, then Mahindra has definitely gone off the wall. The current Scorpio and XUV500 are competent cars, but are outdated when compared to newer rivals. The only thing that actually distinguishes the pair from the others is a third row of seats. But I'm positive Mahindra will not do this. It just doesn't make sense to sell a car(Scorpio) that was originally launched in 2002 in the present day at around 17-18 lakhs on road, or even the XUV which was launched way back in 2011.

If they do their market surveys & pricing strategy is right, this can be achieved. We have to remember the size & huge variance of infrastructure standards & income groups in the country, especially outside of metros.

The brute current Scorpio will still pull respectable sales numbers in semi urban and rural markets where its ruggedness matters more than any 10" ICE screen. Even now, the Scorpio sells in lower trims the most. The XUV5OO also sells in respectable numbers (its nearing the brand new Harrier all the time) so it will sell without much dip. Having these 2 cars as buffers actually gives a way for M&M to price the upcoming models at an even more premium price. Something for which pricing surveys are a real must. Otherwise the facelifts can bomb.

Mahindra sure is going the Maruti way off late. Having 2 overlapping cars at every 1 lakh rupee slab. And they seem to be succeeding in this. Remarkable considering their playing field is costly SUVs and not commuter hatchbacks.

I agree sir, but I feel that Mahindra shouldn't compromise by selling an outdated model like the Scorpio, even in rural markets, especially when it lacks on a key front like safety. It may have a rugged suspension, but still, paying around 11-12 lakhs on road for a base variant Scorpio, Mahindra can just sell a new model that provides some degree of safety.

Sure yes! I'm not at all justifying or recommending. All I'm saying is, if they sell, the market is present. So they'll make money - the primary goal of any business. As much as anyone would claim otherwise, everything is for making money in a business.

Also, without statistical test data for latest models, I don't have a clue of how safe or unsafe the cars are. With BNVSP, they'll all get standard ABS, airbags etc frombase variant. So that will help too a bit.

re: The 2nd-gen Mahindra XUV500, coming in Q2-2021

Saw this article today. Mahindra seems to be accelerating product launches in order to retain UV market share. Hope this haste doesn't result into products with excessive niggles. I believe Mahindra was also trying to standardize many parts across platforms, which should help reduce development time, get benefits of scale (lower costs for same quality or improved quality at same cost or both).

I am waiting for a right car to replace my 2011 XUV5OO with one with automated transmission, better ride quality and superior interiors
