re: MG India's first SUV named Hector. Edit: Launched @ 12.18L

MG Hector bookings open, a handful of MG dealers have begun accepting bookings; first showroom to open on June 4, 2019.

Quote:
Days after the MG Hector got a grand unveil in Mumbai, bookings for the SUV have commenced. MG Motor India dealers have started accepting bookings for the SUV with the booking amount set at Rs 51,000. There is no official communication from MG as yet, though a handful of upcoming dealers in Mumbai and Goa have confirmed the development to us.

Prospective buyers who have registered their interest on MG Motor India’s website are being contacted by regional dealers and have been invited to book the Hector. MG Motor’s first showroom in India is slated to come up in Delhi and will open its doors on June 4, 2019. As reported by us earlier, MG Motor India is readying 120 touch points (sales and service) through 50 dealers. The company plans to increase the number of touch points to 250 by September 2019.

The MG Hector will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV500, Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier. The MG SUV will come with a 143hp, 1.5-litre turbo-petrol; a 170hp, 2.0-litre diesel; and a 48V mild-hybrid version of the 1.5 turbo-petrol unit. The 4,655mm long Hector will launch in five-seat form and MG has officially confirmed to Autocar India that a seven-seat variant will join the line-up in 2020. The SUV will come with a long list of segment first features including a 10.4-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen infotainment system with a number of connectivity technologies, a panoramic sunroof, six airbags, and 17-inch alloy wheels, among others.

MG Hector prices are expected to range from Rs 15-20 lakh.

Thank you I was just about the same. I did though put my name on their website, but still haven't received any call back in Delhi. So I have again put it, let us see if they respond this time.

Hyundai Venue India's first "connected" SUV was unveiled a few days ago just like the Hector and it was launched today. Any idea when Hector is going to be launched?

Any ideas on the media drives? If there is one

re: MG India's first SUV named Hector. Edit: Launched @ 12.18L

I have spotted the MG Hector so far twice on the road till now - once on the Surajkund road and once near a temple near my place (Near Unitech Nirvana in Gurgaon). Both cars were GJ registered Red plate cars and were probably with company officials and may be used for media drives / or as test cars. One car was a Red one and the other one was dark silver. Both looked quite nice and had good road presence. It is a modern looking design which looks coherent and spacious.

The MG Motors head office and company showroom is coming up at Milestone Experion Centre (near 32nd Milestone resort), sector 15, Gurgaon and when I last passed by that place (2 days back) , the showroom still looks like another 10-15 days till opening. I have heard that they plan to open it by the June 4th. The Showroom size and location is quite nice and they are doing it up nicely and showcasing the heritage of MG Motors.
Once it is open, I plan to drop down there and check out the showroom as well as the Hector.

Drove the petrol manual hybrid for a couple of kms, smooth engine with good pickup. Does not feel like you are driving a big SUV. Lots of room inside.

I can spot an Innova behind, any pictures of them together? Would be helpful to know how the dimensions translate to real life road presence.

As for the Chinese Car brand aspect - most people here think it is British - I have recently educated several of my colleagues that it is Chinese and they had their eye balls pop out and I had to show the Wikipedia link of SAIC to prove it to them. So that aspect will not be denting Hector mostly. If not for Team-BHP maybe I would have thought it to be British as well...

I am thinking it should be a neat toss up between the Hector and the upcoming Kia SP concept whatever be its nomenclature when launched. I might look at the Kia myself personally as long as it does not have the Creta's braking issue

re: MG India's first SUV named Hector. Edit: Launched @ 12.18L

Internationally here is how MG Hector is viewed.

- MG Entering Indian Market With New Hector SUV – Except It’s Not An MG

- Awkward name aside, the Hector is not exactly an MG. It is actually a Baojun 530, a model that recently launched as Chevrolet Captiva in Thailand and Colombia and as Wuling Almaz in Indonesia.

Quote:
So how did MG get a shot at a vehicle partially developed by General Motors?

Well, it’s a classic case of it leveraging the resources of parent company SAIC. The Chinese carmaker has a joint venture with GM in China that builds the Baojun 530. Apparently, GM has nothing against MG selling the SUV under its own badge in India

So Hector is just GM product trying its luck again in India with a British badge! Does that mean Hector doesn't share much DNA with other MG cars? Like how Cruze and Beat had different DNA when compared with Chevy's Sail or Enjoy.

It's all a conglomerate. Even the GM cars are SAIC Baojun. Remember MG is wholly owned subsidiary of SAIC which is partnered with GM.

The Hector is even made in GM's Halol plant which is acquired by MG.

You can say the Hector is an Indian made car, designed by the chinese with a British badge and has American powertrains.

Edit: It's like saying the iPhone is chinese but it's an american brand, assembled in china with korean electronics.

This was exactly my concern. Other MG cars which were displayed few months back looked great (in terms of design, fit and finish) and the Hector seems to be a different kind of animal.

A Potted History on MG's Evolution

1920's till 1950's - An offshoot of Morris, built small affordable sports cars using Morris Components
1950's - 1980 - Built affordable sports cars and badge engineered BMC cars
1980-2005 - Built Badge engineered sporty versions of Leyland, later Rover Group Cars
2005 - MG defunct - Rights and plant sold to Nanjing Auto which was acquired by SAIC. Meanwhile SAIC had the rights to build the Rover 75 which was the basis of MG. Confusing and conflicting - Yes, so SAIC acquires Nanjing, hence MG
2011 - MG reappears in the UK but this time, all MG's are mundane bread and butter vehicles, none of the simple sporting version of yore
2019 - Now predominantly an SUV manufacturer.

MG is merely a Badge, it is not the brand that it used to be!

Not to mention BMW bought them in 1994.
