The news is indeed authentic but the platform mentioned will not be Toyota's, rather it will be Suzuki's only, probably the international Vitara or Indian S Cross. The details about powertrains are a bit unclear but a diesel does not seem to be in picture. Maybe an electric or hybrid powertrain may figure in equations.

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki's Creta-rivalling SUV coming in 2020

At least the brakes won't fail.

On a serious note, how hard is it to start producing the existing (4.3m long) Suzuki Vitara? Between MSIL & TKM, I'm sure they can easily produce 15,000 units a month without any factory expansion.

2022? This is going to be another Yaris fiasco. Happy to be proven wrong though.

Next Generation Suzuki Vitara is under development and will be launched in 2021.

So even if they bring the same, with testing and development in India, it will be launched at the next Auto EXPO (2022)

The mainstay of the range will be Suzuki’s 1.5-litre petrol engine, though a punchier turbo-petrol offering could be on the cards as well. There is no talk of offering a diesel powertrain, for now.
Fingers crossed on Maruti managing the plant.

The engine part is a real bummer.
The Suzuki K15 is no doubt a good decent engine, but in a Creta rival?
Unless they bump up power by 15+ bhp or at least manage to have an additional gear in both the manual and automatic. Good engine to have in an Ertiga or Brezza, not in a Creta rival one.
Don't think Suzuki has a more powerful NA petrol engines in their lineup.

Toyota is equally handicapped. It has a Ford dragon type 1.5l i3 NA engine in the Yaris and others, but don't think the Dynamic Force family of engines would make it to India.
The Etios/Yaris 1.5l would be less preferred than the Suzuki K15.

For the turbo petrol, Toyota is again handicapped.
The original Toyota Raize has a 1.0l i3 turbo that barely makes 100bhp, while the next turbo petrol is the older 1.2l NR engine ( the Etios Liva 1.2l with direct injection and turbo)
Toyota has for now, relegated turbocharging to sporty, expensive models.

Again, Suzuki has the motor for the job.
The elusive for India K14 Boosterjet with 140bhp that we all salivated in the Swift Sports.

No diesel options?
Would be stupid to not bring the 1.5 ddis back.
Though IMHO, this is the best chance to bring proper hybrids to the game.

So, a Daihatsu low cost platform with a Maruti NA petrol engine, and possibly a Suzuki turbo petrol.
Begs the question. Why bother when they could bring the Vitara here, since there isn't much discernible difference.
Bring a diesel or hybrid, then we are talking.

We are not sure what this mid- SUV will be?

But today Toyota has announced that it is near production ready with a Mid SUV built on the e-TNGA platform.

Will the new SUV in discussion be a BEV?

Quote:
Toyota has previously said that other models planned for the e-TNGA platform will include a compact SUV that it’s developing with Suzuki, a crossover, a large SUV, a saloon and an MPV. Toyota is also investing in solid-state battery research and has said that it plans to launch a “mass-produced” BEV using this transformative technology “in the first half of the 2020s”.

Edited :

Maybe the compact SUV mentioned will be an all new one.
Toyota is reluctant to even bring TNGA products (bar Camry) to India, let alone their newest EV platform designed specifically for Europe.

Fingers crossed. Though looking at our market conditions, it would either be DNGA or the next gen Vitara platform.

Re: Rumour: Maruti Suzuki's Creta-rivalling SUV coming in 2020

Toyota launched the Corolla Cross internationally. It may to come in India as an SUV with beefed-up claddings and wheel arches.
I could see that as a potential contender to Creta and the likes

This will be in the Compass's price bracket, it has a hybrid power train and that'll make it more expensive than regular ICE alternatives. It'll be much more expensive than the Creta or Seltos.

Scoop! Maruti-Toyota working on new crossover above Brezza

Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are said to be working on a new crossover (codenamed: D22).

Rumour: Maruti Suzuki's Creta-rivalling SUV coming in 2020-marutivitarabrezzapetrol11.jpg

We have been told that the new model could be positioned between the Vitara Brezza and the Hyundai Creta / Kia Seltos. We still don't know the powertrain options that will be offered on the D22. However, it might get an all-wheel drive variant.

The D22 crossover will be manufactured at Toyota's manufacturing unit near Bangalore. However, sourcing of components is expected to be done through Maruti Suzuki.

Maruti is also working on a compact crossover codenamed YTB. This model is expected to share its underpinnings with the Baleno hatchback.

Nope. We have been told this one is different. It's all about profits. Maruti has been watching from the sidelines - depressed - as it sees the Creta + Seltos + Hector take away all the 15 to 20 lakh rupee customers. The profits in this segment are incredible and, surprisingly, so are the sales volumes.

I presumed that they already had such a product Handy.

What is the problem with this?

Re: Scoop! Maruti-Toyota working on new crossover above Brezza

Sourcing of components through Maruti!!! Please, don't.

Isn't this the Creta rival based on the Raize's DNGA platform?
Or a new one between Brezza and Creta segments?

If Toyota-Maruti is planning to launch it with the K15 engine only, it will be a bummer.

The K15 for lower price point, the 1.5l Maruti diesel too if it is back, the delicious 1.4l Suzuki turbo petrol engine against the Koreans and a full blown hybrid model too.
AWD rumour may as well remain as a rumour, though the platform is AWD ready.

- Well, the above exact model is for a generation change this year.

- They may have to dumb it down for the Indian market.

- The rumoured DNGA platform is more erm... economical than the next gen Vitara which may cross the 15 lakhs mark.

Looks like after being absent mostly from the >4m SUV/crossover segment, Maruti may well be carpet bombing the 10-20 lakhs segments.
Next gen Brezza, this Toyota collab, next gen Scross, 5door Jimny and if they please maybe even next gen Vitara itself. Not to say, the rumoured coupe SUV too.

Re: Scoop! Maruti-Toyota working on new crossover above Brezza

One is world's best known automotive brand which has been selling its butch diesel SUVs in every corner of the globe since time immemorial. The other has been around in India since eons and sells one in two cars in India. It's really a shame that even after joining forces for over a year now, they are still nowhere near making an SUV above Brezza. Ditto with Honda. I think Japanese are done in this country. The only exception seems to be Nissan which is trying its best to gain lost footing.
