Honda City base ‘S’ variant discontinued — Starting price now Rs 9.75 lakhs

Quote:
Honda Cars India has discontinued the base 'S' variant of their popular City sedan in the Indian market. The Honda City was initially available in: S, SV, V, VX and ZX trim levels. However, with the 2019 update, Honda has removed the base 'S' variant, making the 'SV' trim the new base variant for the sedan. With the removal of the base 'S' variant of the City sedan, the starting price has also increased from the earlier Rs 8.77 lakh price tag to Rs 9.75 lakh. Both prices are ex-showroom (Delhi). Apart from the changes to the variant list, the Honda City remains unchanged otherwise.

re: Honda City base ‘S’ variant discontinued — Starting price now Rs 9.75 lakhs

I hope Honda has the data to back this up; there were probably not many takers for this variant. However, what this has done is push the entry level City up by a lakh.

At a time when Ciaz and Verna are eating into its sales heavily, Honda ought to make the variants more appealing. Taking out the base variant doesn't sound like a sound strategy.

Based on my analysis, base variants of Honda City constitutes a very low percentage of overall sales. Data is not accurate because it is taken from availability of such models in the used car market.

2019 Honda City prices are out, as along with the inclusion of a new petrol manual variant, the prices are revised across the range

For instance, the 1.5 SV Petrol sees its price reduced by Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 9.50 lakh and Rs. 9.76 lakh for Pearl White colour. The 1.5 VX and 1.5 V CVT have their prices slashed by Rs. 33,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively. The 1.5 VX CVT also witnesses a drop of Rs. 22,000 while 1.5 SV diesel is also part of the reduction by Rs. 10,000. The 1.5 V and 1.5 VX diesel trims have their prices trimmed by Rs. 14,000 and Rs. 33,000 respectively. Honda has hiked prices elsewhere too as the 1.5 V petrol endures an increase of Rs. 14,400. The high-spec ZX CVT petrol is involved in a major hike of Rs. 29,500 and the ZX diesel at Rs. 17,000.

Re: Honda City base ‘S’ variant discontinued — Starting price now Rs 9.75 lakhs

The purpose of many poverty-spec base variants is:

1. To show a lower starting price when the car is launched & to avoid "sticker shock". Many manufacturers just have this variant on paper and produce it in little or no numbers.

2. To show a lower starting price when a customer is comparing it to other models (even after the product has matured).

3. To appeal to the taxi market which isn't really applicable to the City as an overwhelming majority of its customers are individuals.
