Please see this (Fiat Punto, the first car ever to receive Zero Stars in the Euro NCAP) thread. One has to admit that other than cosmetic changes, no real features have been added over the years. No auto box, no revision to engine, no additional safety features and so on.

As a 2011 Punto 90 HP, I am sad to see Fiat shutting down. The car still runs great. I am considering converting it to electric in a couple of years and replace my city drive (Celerio AMT).

That is EuroNCAP, and current EuroNCAP regulations require quite a bit of electronic driver safety aids, to garner scores.

GNCAP is vastly different from EuroNCAP. Roughly, a stable body structure, two airbags would get a decent score (3/4 stars) in GNCAP. (Brezza, Nexon, Polo, etc)

Same cars in EuroNCAP would score much much lesser since requirements are different.

Please read some informative threads right on t bhp on the same topics. They have much more detail than what I could gather.

Thanks for letting me know.

I feel not really updating a product for 10+ years is disappointing. A maker of state of the art car is 2010 is nowhere close to the updated state of the art in 2019. You could argue the Jeep represents that from the FCA stable but at least for my needs it falls short of being a good upgrade from Punto (mainly space issues).

It looks as though the Hyson Fiat showroom has shut down in Cochin. I'll try to take a picture the next time Im passing by.

FCA did not grant Jeep dealerships to several dealers not willing to upgrade their showrooms - so many FIAT dealers have eventually shut shop.

I would expect only the Jeep / Mopar dealerships and service centers to continue with FCA going forward.

What is the way forward?

Greetings,

I own a 2017 Punto Evo. This purchase, like many other fiat owners, was purely heart based rather than mind based. It has been a blissful 2 years with pleasure rides just for the sake of it. However, recently the car made some weird noises and was diagnosed with spoiled ball bearings in the rear wheel setup. This was a relatively new car with some 25k on the ODO. Contacted the service center and they assured me the availability of spares and gave the service quotation. Pretty straight forward on this road.

On the other road, Fiat broke up with India and I am pretty sure they are even leaving the world as the sales, even in their strong markets like Brazil and Italy are disappointing.

My brother knows a Honda dealer owner and we asked him if he can get hold of the parts at somewhat less price as he is in the market. He searched and answered in negative and on top of that suggested that we sell the car as soon as possible because, down a couple of years, the car would worth nothing and even the spare parts availability would be sparse and one has to import them.

I am in a dilemma as this is the car I loved and waited for almost 6 years to purchase and a near perfect replacement for the Punto is not in my mind nor in the market as per my knowledge. The steering, the dynamics, the beauty and the tank like build are some rare combinations in the sub 10 lakh pricing bracket.

Requesting other Fiat owners and knowledgeable persons to help me set my mind up.

Thank you.

Re: What is the way forward?

I would suggest that you have patience with the present goings-on and rumblings from Fiat India, from where some negative signals are emanating. It would not be very difficult to run the car even if the production stops, simply because the company will remain in India with the Jeep brand.

There are many enterprising importers who will resort to imports of spares from competitive markets at affordable prices as and when the spare supplies dwindle from the company. As there are very few older cars like Daewoo Cielos, Ford Escorts and Opel Astras, no businessman risks importing their spares, though these should be available in many markets worldwide. The Opel Astra and the Opel Corsa/ SAIL ran on our roads for quite many years, even after these were discontinued. Likewise, we have hundreds of Yamaha RD 350's surviving and it has almost reached the status of a "cult bike" with prices ruling upward of Rs 2 L in the used bike market. Hence, a lot of spares are still sourced from South East Asia by importers, though not good qualitywise or at par with the OE.

Fiat has announced that it will discontinue making cars, but has not hinted that it will exit the Indian market. Its Jeep brand continues to sell well, if not very well. Hence, the company is committed to supply spares for the next ten years for the current range of Fiat cars, as is the established norm in our automobile industry.

For your car it should not be a big problem till the model is in vogue around the world and till many are in use in India. A good demand will prompt spares dealers to find channels to import such spares thereafter.

Re: What is the way forward?

If you have the Diesel Punto, you don't have any reason to worry since it has the 1.3 MJD which is extremely common. Infact, so much so that it has been coined the term National Engine of India due to its popularity. This engine is also used in many other cars including Marutis so spares can be easily sourced.

Even if you have the Petrol, I think Fiat is still legally liable to sell you spares for the next ten years according to the law and you should not be worried.

Cheers!

Re: What is the way forward?

The situation now isn't much different from 2017 if we consider information through official channels. People here are maintaining Palios without much trouble (relative terms) so maintaining a Punto MJD shouldn't be that difficult.

Do what every Fiat owner does i.e. form a strong network with other Fiat owners in your city and also treat the local Fiat expert mechanic better than you have treated any mechanic. And, you shall be set for the car's life.

Thank you for the encouragement. . I have decided to stick with the car, since one, it is love and two, there are no visible replacements.

Yes, happened in my city too. The erstwhile Fiat showroom is still a haunted place, and a Nissan showroom shut down in the city and (possibly the same person) opened a Jeep showroom there in its place

I second this and as a proud Tjet owner I don't understand what's the whole cry about.... If fiat keeps the production line or not how does it effect the customer as long as he/she is backed with a good service and spares support.

Vroom Pointe in Navi Mumbai is an awesome example of service support and FCA still delivers spares on time whenever needed. There is no official word from FCA on the fate of Fiat and even now 2019 Tjet 125S and Abarth are rolling down the production line which means there are enthusiasts who are still buying and we still have Uno and Palio owners who are getting spares and support (service).

Re: Rumour: FCA will be discontinuing the Fiat brand in India

Still, FCA India strategy is still not known. I recently visited a service station in Navi Mumbai. Interesting to see all staff wearing a shirt with MOPAR logo. The enthusiasm was high to take up the repairs. What overhead is that Fiat India is coming with an upgrade to the current engine to meet the emission norms by 2010. Also, three models have been lined up for launch. That was quite interesting when all are talking about the EXIT, here the team is fully gearing for continued service offering to the customer.
MOPAR is a world giant support FIAT for spares. I think spares will not be any concern as long as Fiat vehicles are on the road.

Vroom Pointe is perfect example of good service even when the parent company is not selling cars

coming to new launches, I have been hearing about FIAT exit from India since 2012 and TIPO and other lineup launches since 2014 and here we are in 2019 and both rumors refuse to die. As far I am getting an awesome service and spares available for my Tjet I am at peace and happy flying low below radar detection on the road with my jet.
