Apart from Toyota logo and minor change in front grill design, I don't think Toyota Kirloskar motor will put much effort in current brezza.
Usually when Autocar calls it an "Autocar Exclusive" it is more or less accurate. Good to see at least Nissan Micra to Renault Pulse level changes this time around. And with Toyota axing the Etios brand, they desperately need more affordable products to bring in volumes and keep the brand relevant.

re: Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21

When Autocar announced that Toyota's Vitara Brezza based SUV will be called Urban Cruiser, I recalled my memory of early 2006s, when my Parents had been to London on a vacation and when they returned they told me much about this car, since Toyota was running on success of Innova, I didn't think much about this car to make it here. But time's changed and now we have same name used on a different car but almost similar type but a bit taller.

For those who didn't know history about Toyota Urban Cruiser, here is brief information about one.

In Early 2000s, Toyota did have a Small Hatchback called Urban Cruiser for EU Market. It was based on Yaris and was shade under 4m at that time. Powering it were choice of 1.3 L & 1.5 L Petrol Engines with option of Manual & Automatic Gearbox.

Just like Brezza this too was square and boxy looking. Please have a look at these images below,

Exclusive! Toyota Urban Cruiser ready for August 2020 launch. Source : Autocar

Quote:
Toyota will launch its Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza-based Urban Cruiser sometime in late July or August, depending on how soon the coronavirus pandemic can be controlled. Although Toyota's first compact SUV for India is essentially a badge-engineered Vitara Brezza, there will be quite a few changes to help differentiate it from the Maruti. Whereas the Glanza - the first Maruti-based Toyota - is identical to the Baleno save for the badge, the Toyota Urban Cruiser will be altered in certain key areas. For example, it will get more of a Toyota identity up-front, with relatively inexpensive-to-change 'soft parts’, like the plastic bumpers and grille, seeing the majority of tweaks. Toyota will also make small changes to the rear of the Urban Cruiser, to help differentiate it from the Brezza. Parts like the headlights and tail-lights, which are more expensive to change, are likely to be only mildly altered, if at all. There will be no sheet-metal changes, with even alloy wheels carried over from Maruti Suzuki’s compact SUV.
Another important change Toyota will make is to the interior. The current Brezza's cabin is a mass of grey plastic and, in order to brighten up the insides and make it look a bit more upmarket, Toyota will use lighter colours and a few fresh ‘graphics’. Toyota's Urban Cruiser could also be the first of the compact SUVs to come with the hybrid tech on the manual version. Hybrid technology is integral to Toyota's global philosophy and is widely acknowledged as an important fuel saving measure. As a result, the manual version will almost certainly get an improved fuel economy rating from testing authority ARAI. Interestingly, the traditionally thirstier automatic version is rated higher on the Brezza - at 18.76kpl - thanks to the mild-hybrid. Meanwhile, the non-hybrid manual Vitara Brezza (normally a manual is more efficient than its automatic counterpart) is currently only rated at 17.03kpl.
Though both the automatic and manual Urban Cruiser will be mild-hybrids, there will be no ISG external badging - Toyota refers to the system as the Integrated Starter Generator.
Toyota's Urban Cruiser will be produced by Maruti on the same line as the Brezza. Overall prices of the Urban Cruiser will be similar to those of the Maruti Vitara Brezza, ranging from around Rs 7.5 to 11.5 lakh, but Toyota will lure customers by loading its top-of-the-line variants with more features and providing a longer, 3-year or more standard warranty pack.

re: Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21

This is excellent news ! The lockdown has allowed Toyota to make their designers work from home
We will be so fortunate to be able to buy a Brezza with Toyota standard bumpers, a Toyota standard grill and a lighter color interior.

For god sakes Toyota ! Get serious about India ! You are given respect here & you need to give it back like the Koreans

Toyota has a SUV that is perfect for this segment and its called the Raize, why aren't you building it here. You can sell 10,000 a month and that itself will bring in economies of scale.

You have the new Yaris based SUV that would give a serious run for its money to the Koreans who are killing it in the segment. The RAV4 that would outsell your own fortuner.

1) They get access to Maruti's India supplier base who supply parts to Maruti at presumably lower rates owing to the volumes involved. If Toyota can bundle parts for their cars with Maruti models by forcing Suzuki to accept high specification parts, Toyota can then logically go for Cost cutting in their cars and improve profits. Also, Toyota group suppliers get entry to Maruti supplier base, again a win.
2) Toyota does not have to invest huge amounts to start selling a lower cost brand line Daihatsu. Suzuki is anyways competitive with Daihatsu in Japan. So, Maruti becomes low cost car supplier to Toyota.
This partnership is a sad reality, and someone who has owned both the brands, I can only say "what a fall it was, my countrymen" (for Toyota, that is).
1. My experience of Maruti is that of poor quality parts and even poorer service (relative to Toyota). I am not sure this "access to vendor" base will be a curse or a boon in the longer term. Toyota customers KNOW why they are paying the premium in the capital cost of the vehicle. Even my 180,000 Km old Innova was more reliable, with way lower parts failure rate than my "then new" Ertiga
2. Toyota India's failure is a lack of vision, not an absence of "low cost cars" - look at the number of poor, limited-means taxi owners who buy expensive Innovas.....Maruti partnership will not solve that.

Well, let's see how this pans out in the long term

Maruti Suzuki to begin supply of Vitara Brezza to Toyota.

Maruti Suzuki stated the company approved the supply of the Vitara Brezza to Toyota Kirloskar Motor in a board meeting earlier today.

What could be different on the Urban Cruiser are the bumpers and grille, but there will be no sheet-metal changes, and it could also get the same alloy wheels as the Maruti. On the inside, the Toyota Urban Cruiser is likely to get a lighter interior colour scheme and some graphics to liven up the interior.

re: Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21

The Toyota branded Brezza may come with hybrid petrol engine in manual variant. So does it mean that the ARAI certification shown earlier was meant for Toyota only? Will Maruti also launch manual variant with hybrid tech or will it be exclusive to Toyota?

Slightly but why did MSIL have to inform the NSE about this?

The letter indicates March 2019 as the supply approval date for Glanza, which was eventually launched in October. Does it hint a similar timeline for the Urban Cruiser too!!

re: Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21

Toyota Urban Cruiser - it has a nice ring to it from an Indian perspective. My guess is that it may out-perform the Glanza.

My uncle was visiting a mall with his family when he saw a stall with the Glanza displayed. He told me it was love at first sight - I asked him how could that be possible when the Baleno has been around for years and he never fell in love with it?

He said Toyotas are definitely better than Marutis, completely ignoring my puzzled look or the fact that both Glanza and Baleno are the same. He became the 2nd owner of a Glanza in the district.

Toyota Urban Cruiser Launch Delayed. To come in two variants when launched.
The vehicle was supposed to be launched by August and now the wait has been extended. The delay is due to Maruti Suzuki not dispatching the cars and the Urban Cruiser has not reached Toyota dealerships yet. The compact SUV will reach Toyota dealerships directly from the factory.

re: Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21

Rumour: Toyota Urban Cruiser bookings to open on August 22

According to a media report, bookings for the Toyota Urban Cruiser are likely to open from August 22, 2020. The report also indicates that the crossover will be launched sometime in September, this year.

Toyota to launch Urban Cruiser (rebadged Vitara Brezza) in FY 2020-21-www.teambhp.jpg

The Urban Cruiser is essentially a rebadged Maruti Vitara Brezza. While it will share the same bodyshell, Toyota will give it a few design tweaks to differentiate it from the Maruti version. Just like the Glanza, the Urban Cruiser could get a new grille and redesigned bumpers among other changes.

Toyota might make a few changes to the interior as well. Besides replacing the Maruti badges with Toyota ones, the car could also get lighter coloured interiors that could make the interior feel more airy.

The Urban Cruiser is likely to be powered by the same 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol mild-hybrid powertrain from the Vitara Brezza. This engine makes 104 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm and comes mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Another sub-4 meter SUV that is scheduled to be launched this festive season is the Kia Sonet. It will compete in the same segment as the Urban Cruiser.
