Tata is far behind in introducing a hybrid powertrain. Even their EVs are not very efficient.
Cherry has in its portfolio quite sophisticated hybrid/plug-in hybrids which contributes to significant reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emission.

Tata could be harnessing this tech at a low cost with this deal.

Re: Tata Blackbird: Creta-rivaling SUV being developed

TATA is eyeing to learn know-how from Chinese, that too Hybrid?

It is understood that Chinese OEMs have developed hybrids & EVs and with the size of the market in China & Govt. support, they could show sale numbers. But, they could not really achieve these numbers owing to their technology. If that's true, you should see their brands in South East Asia now. I would be heavily doubtful that TATA is really willing to introduce Hybrid in SUV. That would be damn expensive and it won't really cut Creta's dominance.

Since our market is also maturing, thanks to Venue / Seltos / EcoSport / XUV 300, the SUV buyers are going high on awareness. On road presence & body dynamics, Chinese vehicles may not beat Koreans. On the other hand, TATA, with their brand is betting high on cheap Chinese tech, they are not learning from GM's collapse in India due to overture dreams of SAIC's vehicles rebranded as Chevy.

TATAs should focus on upping the sales of Nexon, HEXA & Harrier by taking feedback from owners & improving rather than diverting their resources behind these new products that too shortcuts to success. Market is not the same as before, buyers are aware and do demand.

If it is to come in 2021, TML could'nt just be in talks for platform as on date. If platform isnt decided, there's no way anything can be launched in just 1.5~2 yrs. Either the launch date is atleast 2022-23, or TML has already decided on platform 2 yrs ago & we're hearing Cherry involvement only now!

Codename is catchy...should call it Sierra...bringing back memories of the old classic.

Re: Tata Blackbird: Creta-rivaling SUV being developed

New rendering of blackbird from rushline.

It is a mix up of new Tata cars

1. Front from the facelift Nexon _ is it Nexon or Blackbird( face lift spied as Nexon ) ?!

2. Alloy design from buzzard/H7X but I feel Tata will not design or develop this on the production version. IMO They have some issue with there alloy vendor or designer. only the Hexa had good alloy wheels, it was a looker. No other Tata car had a good looking alloy in near future. Lets see what Tata done with altroz.

But at last it will be a good product from Tata , Only if they studied what happens to Harrier (launch) and Hexa (sales)

Re: Tata Blackbird: Creta-rivaling SUV being developed

Considering Tata's current design philosophy, it should be a looker. Positioning this in between the Nexon and the Harrier will be a bit tricky though. This is a very lucrative segment which no automotive manufacturer wants to ignore. In terms of pricing, they should price it below the Creta and the Seltos else it is not going to bring in good numbers. I do not see any issue in the 1.5L engine from the Nexon being used. With a higher state of tune, it is potent enough to power a bigger car. The 2.0L engine from the Harrier will drive the costs upwards and considering the fact that all rivals in this segment use 1.5L engines, this will not make it through. Competition in this segment is really heating up.

Tata needs to seriously update its logo or better - create a new, retail oriented sub-brand! I love the Harrier, but my wife can't stand the same badge on an Indigo taxi and the Harrier.

For some reason, The S of Suzuki seems OK to her despite it being on every second car, regardless of its class and size. Perhaps its the foreign syndrome!

I had the exact same thought when TATA started making modern good looking cars starting from the Tiago. A new sub-brand only for the newer passenger vehicles would've helped them create a fresh brand image in consumer's minds and steer perceptions towards premium-ness and desirability.

Not sure we are going OT here. Creating a sub-brand may not help unless people change their perception on Tata created by Indica era. Even if Tata comes up with sub-brand and new logo, people will still consider it as Tata Car. So no much gain their. The best thing Tata can do is change the perception of people on their products and services. It is changing but slowly. Tata's upcoming portfolio looks promising. Hornbill, Altroz, Buzzard, Blackbird etc. Now they have to invest on their customers.

When was the last time you saw an Indigo taxi? Nowadays its more Suzukis and Hyundais. They do not seem to have this badge problem, you speak of.

Maybe it is the 'foreign syndrome'

That's a pathetic safety rating. Doubt if Tata chooses to go ahead with Cherry Tiggo3's platform given the poor safety rating.

I doubt if Tata will use a Cherry platform for its cars. Their cars are really pathetic and I don’t think Tata will use them as a benchmark for build quality.

Re: Tata Blackbird: Creta-rivaling SUV being developed

It appears this particular Chery platform based SUV is not in Tata's plans in the coming years.

In an interview with Press Trust of India, Shailesh Chandra (Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business Unit President), talks about Tata's SUV portfolio.

He says, Tata will have four SUVs covering it. Nexon and Harrier are already here. Gravitas and Hornbill will join them soon.

In his words:

"Hornbill will be at a very aggresive position at one end and Gravitas at the other end, the company would be well poised to tap the growing trend towards SUVs.
It would help strengthen our market position and sales in the coming years"

No mention of the Blackbird anywhere.

Nothing out of place in that statement. The Backbird hasn't been officially announced yet, nor any concepts shown. No official will talk of it unless officially announced. So cant really infer what's going on on that particular project!
