Oh my dear god. So they are coming, ‘sedans endgame’. We have a similar contraception in the form of Fiat Linea in the market. They just made the stance weird by increasing the ground clearance unnecessarily, which was once an art on wheels.

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

Just spotted the S-presso near Delhi University:

The video also shows it's size relative to the older wagonR.

It looked pretty high from my Corolla Altis.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso to be sold in four variants, will get an AMT gearbox option with the BS6-compliant 1.0-litre engine in higher-spec variants.

The S-Presso will also sport a central-mounted digital speedometer – a first for any Maruti Suzuki model

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

I'm not able to place exactly where this car is to be fit in the product portfolio and its real purpose. Does MSIL actually intend selling this in huge volumes really?

Or its more of a catalyst to move people from the low (relatively) margin Alto series to the far more practical, larger & powerful WagonR? Its practical and more money making for MSIL too.

Customers will surely feel that At about 30k or so more, SPresso offers more than a K10. Then its only a jump of about 40k or so to the WagonR perhaps. Ah and then why not spend a bit more and get the sweet K12 WagonR! The Spresso may or may not sell in huge volumes. But it surely will work as a good marketing & upsellng tool within the same Arena showrooms.

Reliable inside information also mentioned the fact, that after the KWID's commercial launch, Maruti picked up almost a dozen of them and gave it to different engineering departments for a complete teardown and benchmarking exercise to understand the French car's engineering & cost structure.
Correctly quoted.

MSIL hadnt launched any all new product in the recent past. Just the FMCs & FLs. However with the launch of this SPresso am skeptical about generating great volumes for the company considering the fact that compact hatch segment is already shrinking.

High possibility of only getting it cannibalized with Alto/Alto K10.

Also, intelligent strategy has been played by Renault by giving KWID a major facelift (which will again differentiate it with MSIL's SPResso while maintaining the newness).

Tough time ahead for MSILs compacts it seems.

Replacing diesels with CNGs - only a short-term solution.

S Presso will compete with KWID- that is the target car that Maruti Suzuki is gunning for.

Here is now the dimensions compare between the two:

In most dimensions the Maruti car will be smaller than KWID, but will stand tall.

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

If Maruti offers dual airbags, rear wash/wipe and defogger on the top variant and at least a defogger on the mid variants, it would be positioned better than the Kwid. The latter has only a driver airbag. I believe if marketed well, it could feature on the list of best sold cars in India, otherwise it could go away like the Zen Estilo. GOOD BOOT SPACE SHOULD BE AN ABSOLUTE MUST. The Kwid has around 300 litres. Hope the new car has a capacity around that figure.

Personally, I am happy that they are introducing another small hatchback in the Arena lineup. The only turnoff is the centre speedometer console. It was a turnoff in cars like the Tata Indica Vista and the Toyota Etios and Liva (Just my personal opinion.)

P.S. I do not know what is it with Maruti not offering rear defogger and fog lamps, if not rear wash/wipe on its VXi variants such as the Alto (800 and K10), Celerio and the 2019 Wagon R. The defogger is an essential feature which comes in use during monsoons and winter, and it is difficult to drive with a fogged rear screen :( . Time Maruti takes notice.

SPresso has lesser width and more height compared to Kwid - this will make the car very odd to look at. Kwid has a very balanced proportion in these terms.

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

I have now seen the test vehicle under camo multiple times on the road both driving and parked. It is for the last 15 days doing a test route near my house and is parked there for a while after they put a cover on it. Anyway, even though the real lines and design element is covered with heavy camo, the overall stance alongside a kwid seemed to be quite ungainly and tall. The side profile was also quite weird with a small length but excessive height. The front seems to look like a shrunken Brezza though, which would be enough to draw the crowd and make it a success. The ORVM also looked exactly like Kwid's

Kwid is also almost ready with their facelift, it would be interesting to see if Suzuki can also provide the level of ICE equipment that came with the Kwid, which also made it a success.

Oh they notice alright. Its called "product portfolio management". If they give everything in a Celerio, WagonR - who will buy the Ignis or Swift?! "You want a defogger/rear wiper? Sir please buy the Swift". Its one of the gifts of industrialization & being followed since ages by everyone now. It appears amplified in cases like Maruti Suzuki - that have multiple products within pretty much the same segments.

MSIL keeps an eye out for potential segments that can become blockbusters. TATA Motors invented the sub-4m sedan, MSIL cashed in and took it away. Ford Ecosport brought in the sub-4m culture, Brezza took it away. And they sure have noticed the success of the Renault Kwid.

Now Kwid sales by itself may not seem much by MSIL standards, but think of it this way - If a company like Renault is capable of making such an impact with that product - what could an equivalent product from MSIL do?

S Presso as presented by ACI. This is it.

It has a squared-off front end with a high bonnet line, and the headlights (which appear to be halogen units) merge into the slim grille. The angular chrome elements in the grille mimic those seen on the bigger Vitara Brezza; the LED DRLs are positioned below the headlights and in keeping with the S-Presso's micro-SUV theme; and it has a black front and rear bumper to go with the body cladding along the sides.

Other notable design cues of the S-Presso include prominent front wheel arches, a blacked-out B-pillar and muscular haunches. Also visible are flap-type door handles, turn indicators mounted on the front fenders, and what appear to be full covers for steel wheels. The side profile is otherwise largely plain, but it’s clear that the S-Presso is a high-riding hatchback and its 180mm of ground clearance

S-Presso is expected to get a sole engine option – a BS6-compliant version of the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder K10B petrol engine. In BS4-spec, the K10B makes 68hp and 90Nm of torque, and for the S-Presso, will be available with a 5-speed manual as well as with an AMT option

Looks like it is a reworked Ignis, just like Ertiga is transformed into XL6 here Ignis is transformed into S-Presso.

Ah! You rock volkman10! How do you get so much of this stuff so quick!
As for the car - I liked it (per se as a product in those dimensions.). Mostly because the test mule had lowered expectations to the deep depths of the Mariana trench! Perhaps that was the real purpose of the test mules altogether . And this again is horribly under tyred!

By the way - is the orange colour shade the only thing carried over from the Future-S concept? I see nothing else resembling externally!

I liked the looks, they definitely have a winner here. India's craze for SUV like styling + Maruti badge + cost, it ticks all the boxes. Yes, there are concerns about its built quality but since the crash test norms are around the corner, Maruti would have definitely made this car keeping that in mind.
