That was always the intent of Maruti. In fact after the KWID was launched, senior Maruti officials were rattled at the success of the vehicle. In fact if you think about it , KWID was the only one in recent memory to have somewhat rattled the cages at Maruti & proved to be good competition for the Alto.

Reliable inside information also mentioned the fact, that after the KWID's commercial launch, Maruti picked up almost a dozen of them and gave it to different engineering departments for a complete teardown and benchmarking exercise to understand the French car's engineering & cost structure.

It is the Expresso or whatever it is called. It's a small car but not a replacement of Alto. It's another brand new addition to Maruti line-up. Expected by Dussehra- Diwali period. Nothing special about it, a small car wearing SUV clothes.

Yes its not a replacement of the "ALTO" but will replace the slow-selling "Alto K10".

I appeared for a market research survey last month, they showed me a few entry-level cars and I was asked my opinion about them. The focus was on a mini SUV-ish car, how you feel about the car, the looks, interiors etc. Car was roomy, compared to entry level competitors (there was also the Alto, Kwid, Santro, Tiago in the room), the front seat had good under thigh support. The speedometer is placed in the center of the dashboard (like Toyota Liva), window control panel is to the left of the driver. Tyres are puny. Car does look out of proportion, something like the KUV100.

On a lighter note, this is the opposite of "Future S" an old model localised and made cheap for an emerging market.

Future S will be more upright and will feature a Mini-like dashboard with a centre mounted speedo.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso 'micro-SUV' launch in September 2019.

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will sit below the Vitara Brezza; likely to come with a 1.2-litre petrol engine.

Quote:
The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will get a Mini-esque dashboard layout with a digital speedometer and an infotainment screen mounted inside a large circular enclosure. The centre AC vents will be positioned on either side.

Maruti to launch new Micro SUV very soon

https://www.autocarindia.com/car-new...er-2019-413581

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce its smallest SUV in the Indian market. The company will most-likely announce pricing for its all-new S-Presso micro-SUV sometime in September this year. The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will be sold via the brand’s Arena dealership channel. For those who don’t know, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso is actually the production-spec version of the Future S Concept that made its world debut at the 2018 Auto Expo held in Greater Nodia.

The S-Presso will be Maruti’s smallest SUV in the market and will sit below the Vitara Brezza compact SUV. The model will feature an upright SUV-like stance (unlike the crossover-ish design seen on the Ignis and S-Cross) and will go up against the likes of the Renault Kwid and the Mahindra KUV100 NXT. Expect the S-Presso to have at least 180mm of ground clearance and a high seating position.

On the inside, the Maruti micro-SUV is expected to feature “Celerio-like” cabin room, with dark-grey interiors and colour-coded interior bits, just like the ones seen on the concept. The dashboard design will be inspired by the concept too. The Maruti Suzuki S-Presso will get a Mini-esque dashboard layout with a digital speedometer and an infotainment screen mounted inside a large circular enclosure. The centre AC vents will be positioned on either side.

Just like the newer Maruti models, the S-Presso is expected to be based on the flexible and lightweight Heartect platform. Under the hood, expect Maruti to use the BS6-compliant, 1.2-litre petrol engine that also does duty on a number of Maruti cars like the Wagon R, Swift, Ignis and Baleno. Expect Maruti to offer a CNG-powered variant as well on this model, albeit a little later.

With the S-Presso, Maruti is looking to take advantage of the Indian consumer’s higher preference for SUVs and high-riding vehicles – so far it just has the Vitara Brezza and S-Cross that fulfill these conditions. Expect more details on the S-Presso to trickle out as we head closer to the launch date.

Micro SUV! How the mighty SUV name has fallen!

Although with road conditions in many cities deteriorating or being in a constant state of repair/re-construction plus the already sad state of roads in smaller towns, higher ground clearance vehicles are becoming more of a necessity. Added to that, Indians' love for butch looks. Models like the S-Presso will spell doom for conventional hatchbacks in a few years, once every manufacturer starts making these "Micro SUV"

Bring it on Maruti! We had mini SUVs, pseudo SUVs and now a micro SUV!! Trust Maruti to capitalise on customer sentiment and presumed preferences like no one else can (afford to).

The humongous success of the Brezza, and continued patronage to the humble Wagon-R must have given them oodles of confidence to raise up the Alto.

To me, the disguised avatar looks closer to the Ignis than the Brezza.

Key factor here is that it shows the previous gen WagonR in comparison. I guess S-presso is going to boost sales of the new WagonR even further. If these tyres in the picture are going to be standard issue (at least in lower trims they mostly will be) then this thing is bordering on unsafe for highways.

Those buying the WagonR after initially visiting showroom for the Spresso will surely consider themselves to be from "the smarter race" (WagonR's marketting line).
