re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso launch on September 30, 2019

Maruti Suzuki will launch the S-Presso hatchback on September 30, 2019. Watch the live streaming of the launch event here.

As per recent spy images, the S-Presso is likely to feature SUV-like styling with an upright stance. It is expected to get twin-pod headlights at the front and slim grille with silver inserts. It could get a dual-tone front bumper and LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the S-Presso is likely to get rectangular tail lamps and a dual-tone bumper with integrated reflector strips.

Media reports suggest that the Maruti S-Presso could be offered in four variants. It could be powered by a BS-VI compliant 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox.

What happens when you cross Alto with Ignis, you get S-presso. Voila. End of the day, it is going to be a seller for Maruti.

Saying such cars fall in Micro SUV category is so absurd. CSUV is still passable as they've atleast got the dimesions to show, but this is just playing with us. Fooling people into thinking they are buying a car with SUV feel. Manufacturer's should park these next to a Fortuner or XUV or an ISUZU or any other SUV from their stable to get a reality check. No wonder industry is in doldrums.

Confirmations:
  • BS-VI compliant 1.0L 67 BHP petrol engine (no apparent loss in power compared to BS4)
  • Four broad variants: Standard, Lxi, Vxi and Vxi+.
  • AMT available with Vxi, Vxi(O) and Vxi+.
  • Marginally smaller than Kwid in size, but taller.

That's gross weight not kerb weight. Kerb weight will be closer to 900kgs or lesser.

This seems like common industry practice. Hyundai Santro D lite has no aircon. I think Tiago too had similar entry model. They quickly seem to vanish after launch. These models may seldom sell as they are used to print banners with low starting price.

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

More details about S-Presso emerge via AutoCar. To be sold alongside Alto, will not replace any model from the Maruti portfolio.

Quote:
The S-Presso will be available in a total of 10 versions – Std, Std(O), LXi, LXi(O), VXi, VXi(O) and the range-topping VXi+. ABS, driver-side airbag, rear parking sensors, seat-belt reminders, a digital speedometer and a speed alert system will be standard across the range, but apart from that, the Std variant will be fairly bare-bones. The (O) trim adds a passenger side airbag. LXi will add an air conditioner and power steering, but it’s the VXi that’ll get essentials such as keyless entry with central locking, Maruti’s SmartPlay Dock audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, front power windows, body coloured bumpers and wheel covers. A front passenger airbag will be standard on the VXi+ (and optional on all other variants), as will the SmartPlay Studio infotainment system with voice recognition, steering-mounted controls, rear parcel tray, body-coloured ORVMs and door handles, and a 12V accessory socket. There will be no alloy wheels on any variant, a decision taken to keep prices low.

What we can also confirm is that the S-Presso will be the first recipient of Maruti’s upgraded, BS6-compliant 1.0-litre K10B petrol engine. The three-cylinder engine – which continues to produce 68hp and 90Nm of torque, and will be the sole option for the S-Presso – is expected to subsequently be introduced on other models, such as the Celerio and Wagon R. As has been the case with other BS6-compliant engines, there could be a notable drop in the K10B’s fuel efficiency, which, in BS4-spec, is rated at 23.95kpl. In addition to a 5-speed manual gearbox, Maruti Suzuki will also offer an automated manual transmission (AMT) option on the top three variants (VXi, VXi(O) and VXi+).

The S-Presso won’t replace any model in Maruti Suzuki’s line-up, and will be sold alongside the brand’s bread-and-butter models via its Arena dealerships. When it is launched on September 30, 2019, the S-Presso is likely to sport an aggressive price tag, with prices expected to range from Rs 3.3-4.5 lakh (ex-showroom). While it remains to be seen if entry-level car buyers in India like the taste of this S-Presso shot, Maruti Suzuki will certainly hope its latest offering – designed to appeal to millions of SUV-desiring, first-time car buyers – is a runaway hit and compels rival carmakers to wake up and smell the coffee.

The micro SUV officially named S Presso,

Quote:
The name S-Presso is inspired from the coffee drink – Espresso which Maruti believes resonates with its target audience’s lifestyle.

re: Maruti S-Presso, the SUV'ish hatchback. EDIT : Launched at Rs. 3.69 lakhs

For too long, MSIL has been playing up to the affordable subcompact segment by providing substandard designs on the basis of 'reliability'. I hope consumers have seen enough of this and really want something better. There is zero innovation in this segment and perhaps there will never be, considering the price constraints. This kind of a car would have sold maybe 5 years ago. Unless Maruti is actually planning to replace the Alto with a BSNCAP approved S-Presso, this one will also join the league of confusing choices. The 'second' car is no longer a feasible requirement at least in the metro cities, and even there, those who need it can probably afford one from a higher segment.

If Future-S is the parent, then the S-Presso should be it's stillborn foetus! Yes, the S-Presso is that bad. There's nothing the Future-S and S-Presso have in common. This is Maruti's design language at it's "shi#iest". I'd rather take the original (Kwid) and leave the imitation (S-Presso) in the trash can.

Seriously, this makes Bajaj Qute look street legit! This is about the worst design. I'd even take a beefed up Datsun Go over this contraption.
