I think, the criteria for duty/tax sops should be fuel economy of the car and not the length/power etc. There should be seperate criteria for petrol and diesel as these are two seperate technologies. The duty structure should have slabs by liters/100 km. Thus cars in same segment may have different duty percentage. To implement this we should have an independant testing organization (Govt?), like EPA in USA. The manufacturers should be required to disclose the Fuel consumption figures. This will encourage manufacturers to bring in better engines and consumers will get objective fuel consumption ratings and not percieved (untested) figures.

I would like your valuable comments.

Nice suggestion, also they should make hybrids totally excise and sales tax free, Imagine the savings that will result when it comes to fuel consumtion in India. The way CRDI technology is shaping up they should also give excise benifits to Diesel technology, this technology itself can cut the oil imports by at least 25% with the kind of FE that we are talking about given by these cars.
