TKM plant sourced 87% of power via renewable resources in FY19

Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s (TKM) factory in Bidadi, Karnataka sourced 87% of its electricity from renewable sources of energy in FY2018-19 (till January 2019). TKM claims to have reduced its carbon footprint by more than 51,000 tones of CO2 during the first three quarters of the current fiscal. It aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

The company has said that it is moving from non-renewable to renewable sources of energy across its business operations. It has increased Green Energy Procurement and is investing in the renewable energy sector to meet its energy requirements. According to Toyota, the renewable energy sourcing increased from 15% in FY2015-16 to 65% in FY2017-18. In October 2018, 100% of its energy requirements were met through renewable sources.

Toyota has also installed solar power plants at its Bidadi plant. The rooftop and ground facilities have a combined capacity of 8.4 MW.

Toyota plans to reduce its CO2 emissions by reducing its consumption and improving operational efficiency of its factory. For this, Toyota has installed reverse refrigeration systems, centrally controlled chillers and smart air-conditioning. Technologies such as servo press, global body welding line, wet on wet painting and energy efficient manufacturing equipment are also claimed to reduce overall CO2 emissions.

Well done, Toyota! This is extremely commendable; very heartening to see for-profit corporations go the extra mile in being "green". Hope the Govt. lauds this and encourages other manufacturing units and business parks to invest in green energy. The solar plants will most likely pay for themselves soon enough; and play a small part in reducing the strain on electricity generation via coal.

To achieve something like this in India is really something. Well done TKM.

Clearly; a lot of these savings have been achieved by adopting modern technology and techniques. Reverse refrigeration systems is new to me. Sounds similar to the way a heat pump works.

I am also curious on what other means of renewable energy methods they are using, aside from the Solar plant. Wind is the other option but that area is not exactly great for wind.

At this rate, TKM can probably starts supplying villages around the region with power. This won't go down too well with the Karnataka Government for sure. We need to make progress some day.

It makes me go - W-O-W! Little is said about the disruptive effects of manufacturing and supply chains of the Automotive and Electronics industries. Many ships still burn bunker fuel in the third world.

That number is staggering considering the limited amount of power solar energy produces. I'm guessing their machines are super efficient. I just wish the government would further incentivize efforts to go green in power production and manufacturing. From whatever I read, they seem to be doing a good job.

Re: TKM plant sourced 87% of power via renewable resources in FY19

Does this mean that TKML buys a significant part its electricity requirements from hydro / solar / wind power suppliers instead of thermal power plants?

The other green initiatives that the news speak of might also be significant in the context of green / emission targets set by Toyota on a global basis, and the very low share of hybrid vehicles it sells in India, compared to developed markets.

This is how Toyota manages to stay at the top end of the automotive industry. They simply do not limit their focus on products and marketing channels alone, but on vendors and supply chains, manufacturing practices, and industry standards.
