I had called up Volkswagen Mount Road, Chennai (Sundaram Motors Ltd.) today and enquired about the price of the T-Roc. The sales executive said that it would be within 22L - 25L OTR which translates into an ex-showroom price of 18L - 20.5L. The car would be available for viewing in around a week’s time and test drive would commence a few days thereafter.

I am looking for a solid and safe vehicle (preferable a compact high riding vehicle) for my wife and 1 year old baby. The Ecosport Titanium+ Sports (BS4 S variant) was the one which ticked all the boxes. When the news of the T-Roc surfaced, I am waiting for a while to see how it will do. The Ecosport is around 13.4 OTR at Chennai. If the T-Roc comes in at around 20L OTR, I would really consider it. It is bigger, more exclusive, looks better, more powerful and in all probability safer than the Ecosport as it is a CBU. The T-Cross is still far away and I would need to make the purchase in a couple of months. Seltos and Creta would be a tad bigger and since we already have an Elantra, I am considering other brands.

I would appreciate suggestions regarding this.

Great choice if VW prices it at 25-26L OTR that matches the driveway prices in Europe, but I really doubt that. With a host of safety features and high score from Euro NCAP, you can be assured about it's safety. Since T Roc is slightly lower to the ground compared to Seltos/Creta, you might see superior driving dynamics especially around the corners.

Above all these, you get a powerful motor that is well praised in European markets for it's efficiency and performance. Also I felt VW's DSG to be much quicker and seamless than the Hyundai's DCT. All these factors should justify the premium of 3-4 lakhs over it's Korean competitors, but above that is an overkill.

The T-Roc is larger than the Ecosport - it compares to the Creta and Seltos in dimensions, being 4.23m long and 1.82m in width.

So if your heart is set on it and you can afford it including it's maintenance - which I'm sure will be expensive compared to the Ford - you should be booking it ASAP as there will be limited imports due to the 2500 car limit per manufacturer - so think hard and act fast. I have already booked mine.

2500 limit is for entire Skoda - Audi - Volkswagen - Lamborghini group. Out of these 200 went for Skoda vRS 245. The rest will be distributed with the Karoq, T-Roc and Tiguan Allspace. My guess 500 each of T-roc and Karoq and maybe 300-400 of Allspace for the entire year.

Last week I was at the VW showroom and the sales person was telling me that T-Roc has already received 400 bookings. I was under the impression that 2500 limit is for T-Roc alone. It is possible that the bookings are already exhausted by now.

What a pity! This could have been an excellent alternative to Jeep Compass for 4WD enthusiasts. Not sure what's the rationale.

Keeping aside the novelty factor, these cars will be very difficult to maintain given the low number that are being imported. I shudder at the thought of what would happen if something were to go wrong or if one met with an accident. It would take months to get them back on road if at all. Pricing for spares would be atrocious to say the least.

Not sure why the disappointment here. This is a petrol only cross over, and even the Compass petrol is a 2WD. I really doubt the reason why people would skip the T-Roc is because VW decided to bring it without their 4motion system.

That's why I specifically mentioned "4WD enthusiasts" The market is certainly lacking options when it comes to compact 4wd SUVs, and an AWD T-Roc would have been welcome for sure.

Agree wholeheartedly. CBUs unless imported in seriously large quantities, can be a terror to maintain as a significant proportion of parts/components will be unique to that vehicle. India being a RHD country also doesn't help of course.

Specific to the T-Roc, while the engine/tranny will be common with many of VAG's upcoming cars (Octavia, Karoq, A3, A4 etc.) any accident repairs needing body panels or glass components can turn into a major issue.

CKDs & SKDs have a huge advantage in this regard.

I had seen the T-Roc in person during the auto expo and one thing that surprised me was that the rear seat was cramped. I'm 5'7" for reference. For something that is supposed to be a Seltos competitor or whatever, the rear seat space seemed abysmal, but the front seemed nice to me and the boot space was good as well. In comparison, my Nexon seemed more spacious.
