Maruti will retain 1.5L diesel, but discontinue 1.3L diesel

Mod Note: Our 1.5L Engine Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Maruti to phase out diesel models from April 2020. Around 23% of all units sold by the company in domestic market are diesel cars said MSI Chairman R.C.Bhargava.

He also said that if the company sees demand for the diesel vehicles post the introduction of BS VI norms, it may consider developing a compliant 1500CC diesel engine.

Maruti will retain 1.5L diesel, but discontinue 1.3L diesel

• The production of the 1.3L DDiS has already been reduced. Its gradually going down & will stop in Q4 2019 or Q1 2020.

• However, contrary to news reports all across the internet, Maruti is indeed going to use the 1.5L DDiS diesel engine in the segments above. Ciaz & S-Cross are confirmed. Maruti is also contemplating using the 1.5L diesel in the Ertiga & Vitara Brezza.

• 1.5L DDiS will be made BS6 compliant. Fact is, the 1.5L diesel was designed keeping BS6 compliance in mind. Maruti had prematurely decided to end diesels in end-2018. But seeing the loss of revenue, they have backtracked on the decision. Maruti has just started BS6 development. The entire process - including calibration and validation - will take some time to complete. They will be late to market by a year or maybe 9 - 10 months. Being the leaders, they thought they can dictate the market, but it doesn't work that way. Maruti might miss the April 2020 deadline, yet make no mistake, the 1.5L WILL DEFINITELY be made BS6 compliant.

• Basically, Maruti will no longer offer diesels in the small cars. They will however in the larger cars.

With a price penalty of ₹100,000 plus it is not viable for MS or other lower end vendors.

So BS-VI signals the end of small diesels.

Maruti Suzuki has invested upwards of Rs 1,000 crore to develop the 1.5-litre diesel. I don't think they will discontinue. The new 1.5-litre diesel engine could make a comeback in the future post 2020 once Maruti Suzuki makes 1.5L diesel BS-VI-compliant.

23% is a big number to write off! Very few of these will buy a petrol, just for the Maruti badge; taxi owners certainly wouldn't want to take the hit with a grossly higher fuel bill. Considering how far we're from sensible hybrids (not the SHVS gimmick) and EVs, Maruti might eventually bring the diesels back in some form. This is where Toyota can help?

There is still a need for small diesel engines, mainly due to the lower running costs. Considering that the Brezza, SWIFT, etc are selling in such high numbers, I doubt MSIL can ignore the segment.

They will have to listen to the needs of the consumers or else the consumers will simply shift to another manufacturer who will meet the need.

I do not really understand why did they launch 1.5 diesel Ciaz and plan to do the same with Brezza and Ertiga. This report does not seem to be correct or there is some thing missing for sure.

Maruti can't ignore the Diesel segment in the UV space, and can't let go off the crores spent in developing their 1.5L Diesel engine. This will be a ploy by them to bring Diesel-loving people to the showrooms and persuade them to buy their cars well in-advance of the doom's day of the Diesels.

Maybe they are just checking the public reaction to the news.

The 1.5 engine has been launched as it was already too long in the making.

I think they will launch this as a BS-VI variant.
As even besides the metro cities, the Diesel variants are ultra popular esp. With the smaller cars like Swift.

If the news is true, it's indeed and big move by the top car maker, It's left with an 800 cc, 998 cc, 1.2 liter and 1.5 liter (I doubt the 800 & 998 cc's would make the cut) petrol engines: only way forward is "true" Hybrid mobility across the range. No one can say Maruti's have a "light" build in the future as the battery packs will be big ones. May be this is where the JV with Toyota comes to bear fruit.

I believe the report from ACI is a little sensational in nature.

The 1.5L diesel was developed for BS6.

I believe the article means the DDiS 190 and 200 will be phased out and they will keep only the 1.5L diesel but even that will only be for SUV or sedans like the Ciaz, Ertiga and Brezza.

Cars such as Baleno, Swift, Dzire will all move to petrol K12B or dual jet hybrid K12C which will replace the diesel engine.

Please change the heading. The Article is misleading. Mr Mhargava's opening words are "In Small Cars" . This is applicable for only 1.3 Fiat engine.

re: Maruti will retain 1.5L diesel, but discontinue 1.3L diesel

That's a load of bull! I find it impossible to believe that Maruti will just abandon diesel cars. Here is why:

- While diesel has gotten a bad name, it still accounts for 20 - 40% of most of Maruti's models (and 100% in the case of the Vitara Brezza & S-Cross). A company that fights tooth & nail for every sale isn't going to give up lakhs of customers every year.

- There is no rocket science to BS-6. It will make things more expensive, yes, but cars in developed countries are already meeting & exceeding these norms.

- Maruti could take Toyota's help if required (sourcing, vendors, tech, cost sharing).

- Hyundai & others will surely be offering BS-6 diesels. Maruti isn't one to give others a competitive advantage.

Yes, the number of diesel options in small cars will shrink, but they're here to stay among larger cars.

Read somewhere today morning that Maruti will stop selling Super Carry from April next year. It has no plans to upgrade that 2 cylinder motor to BS6.

re: Maruti will retain 1.5L diesel, but discontinue 1.3L diesel

Isn't the new 1.5L diesel engine not BS6 ready? Then why on earth have they introduced the engine now? In fact, they are planning to launch models with the new engine.

Any category above C segment needs a diesel. Hybrids are expensive and no petrol gives fuel efficiency anywhere close to the manufacturer claims.
Another reason why Maruti may not launch BS6 is that they may not launch a car above Ciaz.

Now may be the best time to buy a diesel hatchback, resale value after 5 years will be high as there will not be any cheap diesels below 10lakhs and demand for used diesel cars will go up.

re: Maruti will retain 1.5L diesel, but discontinue 1.3L diesel

Well, there are multiple outlets reporting the same now. This no longer seems to be a rumor.

They do, however, mention that...

However, the new 1.5-litre diesel engine could make a comeback in the future. Maruti Suzuki has invested upwards of Rs 1,000 crore to develop the 1.5-litre diesel, but before it works to make the 1.5 BS-VI-compliant, the 10-year lifecycle costs of the engine need to be assessed, as the company also has to look at meeting the super-stringent Real Driving Emissions (RDE) regulation, which is expected to come into effect by 2023 and will further drive costs up.
