Maruti S-Cross 1.5L Smart Hybrid Petrol, now launched at Rs. 8.39 lakhs

Mod Note: Our Maruti S-Cross 1.5L Petrol Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

According to a media report, Maruti Suzuki is likely to introduce the 1.5-litre petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology in the S-Cross.

Maruti S-Cross 1.5L Smart Hybrid Petrol, now launched at Rs. 8.39 lakhs-scross.jpg

The S-Cross is expected to be offered with the same K15B petrol engine that powers the Ciaz and Ertiga. The 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder unit produces 103 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm. It comes with Maruti's mild hybrid technology called Smart Hybrid and a dual battery setup. It is likely to be paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox and could also get a 4-speed automatic as an option.

At present, the S-Cross is only available with a 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine with mild hybrid technology. It produces 89 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque @ 1,750 rpm. It uses a 5-speed manual transmission that drives the front wheels.

re: Maruti S-Cross 1.5L Smart Hybrid Petrol, now launched at Rs. 8.39 lakhs

A much anticipated good news!

Barring the 1.5 L Dragon engine in the Ecosport, we do not have a good all-rounder petrol crossover.

The Creta petrol and Duster petrol are not very fuel efficient whereas the rest of the competition is still stuck with the 1.2 L engines.

Being a smart hybrid with a dual battery setup, am sure it will get a very good low end with the fun of revving a petrol.
The current S-Cross weighs around 1200 kg, so this being a petrol we can expect the car to be lighter. A reduced kerb weight with more power is always a welcome change!

While all manufactures's are going for smaller turbo engine's, Maruti has chosen the conservative path of 'there is no replacement for displacement'!

I actually love bigger naturally aspirated engines over the smaller turbo engines. These engines are much more tractable and one do not have to depend on the turbo zone to have fun. The rev band is much more usable.

This 1.5L petrol in the Brezza and S-Cross will definitely give sleepless nights to the competitors.

Maruti had two weak points-

1) The absence of a petrol in their crossovers.
2) The 1.3 L diesel was too old when compared to the modern diesels.

So both have been taken care off!

Rumour: Maruti S-Cross to get 1.5L Smart Hybrid petrol engine

Another weak point of Maruti -

They are still using 4 speed torque converter for automatics, whereas the competition has grown up with so many options. The least Maruti could do is offer at least a 6 speed torque converter, if not a CVT or DCT. There will be more buyers for automatic variants, who are looking for mileage.

re: Maruti S-Cross 1.5L Smart Hybrid Petrol, now launched at Rs. 8.39 lakhs

This is among the best cars that Maruti builds, but it's let down by the engines (how I miss that beautiful 1.6L diesel). The 1.3L diesel is too small for this car, and the 1.5L petrol - though better than the old 1.4L - still isn't a match to Honda's 1.5L Vtec or Hyundai's 1.6L petrol.

Still, if I was shopping for an S-Cross, I'd pick the 1.5L over the 1.3L diesel. It's clearly the superior and has a very good bottom-end too, making it practical for daily driving.

Agreed. Tiny Suzuki simply didn't have the spare funds for such investments. Maybe they should just pick an AT from the Toyota parts bin now?

They already have their own 6 speed Torque Converter Gearbox in UK market IIRC. In some markets they also have dual clutch automatics.

Why Maruti is still using 4 speed TC in India is beyond me.

Regards,
Shashi

PS: Checkout the specifications section. 6speed AT and 6 Speed TCSS are listed.

Any updates on if and when the S-cross petrol is being launched? I am looking to replace my Swift and this could come in handy. If they have a 6 speed manual or a 6 speed automatic, it is a no brainer

NEXA and Arena Sales executives confirmed that launch will be in February, and deliveries will begin around February end. As of now booking isn't open officially but they are taking bookings against the old variant which will automatically be converted to Petrol BS6. They are informing the customers in advance. January will see the last lot of BS4 models coming for Brezza/S Cross.

Both have their sales training lined up, followed by service training of both the channels.

Shashi

India-bound self-charging 48V SHVS variant of S-Cross showcased at Vienna Auto Show.

While there is no confirmation yet for this system’s launch in India, we can expect Maruti to talk about ‘stronger’ hybrids during the advent of the tighter CAFE norms around 2022.

Quote:
Suzuki Motor has developed a new 48-volt self-charging hybrid system that it will introduce in models including Swift Sport, Vitara and S-Cross from March 2020.
Quote:
The new hybrid system offers up to 20 per cent lower CO2 emissions, better torque and 15 per cent overall improvement for the same engine. The 48V hybrid system just adds 15 kg to the overall weight of the vehicle.
Quote:
The latest development of the SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) consists of a 48V lithium-ion battery, Integrated Starter Generator (known as ISG) and 48V-12V (DC/DC) converter to power components requiring lower voltage including lights, audio and air conditioning. As a natural progression to the current 12V system, the new system is more powerful and offers additional torque up to 235 Nm available from 2,000rpm
Quote:
The 48V hybrid system sees the introduction of electric motor idling when the clutch is disengaged and the engine speed is approximately 1,000 rpm. Replacing the fuel injection, the motor controls and maintains engine idling at low vehicle speeds and when stationary.
Quote:
In addition, a 13-horsepower and 50 Nm electric motor provides internal combustion power, which draws power from an 8 Ah battery underneath the seat, the 12V / 48V converter is placed under the driver's seat.

Seriously! For the kind of numbers they do and all the hullabaloo about offering premium cars under NEXA, they should actually plonk the 1.4 Boosterjet with a 6 Speed AT for the S-Cross.

So what if that breaks the exclusive-to-Vitara proposition, they're used to running over half a dozen cars on the same engine!

"Maruti S-Cross Diesel Discontinued, Petrol To Debut At Auto Expo 2020".

"Multijet motor has been now axed owing to its inability to meet with the upcoming BSVI emission norms. Moreover, with the popularity of the diesel engines on a decline in the lower segments, it makes incredible sense for the company to plonk a petrol mill into the engine bay of its crossover. So, with this, the 2020 Maruti S-Cross will be seen kitted out with the 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that also powers the Ciaz and the Ertiga."
