Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Slow down, fine, but still Maruti has 7 top sellers in the country. The M-o-M decrease in sales of its mid priced hatches seems to have been somewhat balanced by big increase in Ertiga numbers.

All the new launches like Kicks, Civic, Marazzo are unable to sustain their opening months' momentum except the XUV300.

Glanza makes an entry and would make an interesting watch viz a viz the Baleno. Would be interesting to see how long Yaris continues to sell in its current avatar and prices. A relaunch with lower kit and prices seems inevitable.

Nissan just closed its showroom at Nerul, Navi Mumbai and its sales numbers clearly shows which way the company is headed.

Honda should axe the brio already. Sad to see a product from Honda's stable struggling (dying) like this.

This is not a rumour, both have signed agreements and have announced this publicly. Also, ford is not pulling out of India, they will be co-developing SUVs with Mahindra but both will sell cars under their respective brands like Renault and Nissan did with Duster/Terrano.

What interests me is that, how much work the companies are willing to put
to show differentiation in the cars keeping their own brand's design identity. For all we have seen in this kind of development with other JVs, only one of the product succeeded like,

Volumes wise:
1. Duster > Terrano
2. Sunny > Scala
3. Micra > Pulse
4. Baleno > Glanza (assumption based on current success of Baleno)

That's not entirely true. They just moved to a much smaller showroom half a km away.

But yeah they are definitely feeling the heat. I visited the old showroom and people came only for the redi go enquiry. No one seems interested in their higher end models like the kicks and micra.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Aah! Here comes the post that I keep waiting for each month.

Few of my findings,

1. FORD:

It’s usual business in the Ford Camp. It seems that the news about Ford’s proposed alliance with Mahindra has not deterred perspective buyers. Cheers.

2. FIAT:

(F)ind that (I)talian (A)lien on our Indian (T)rack.

3. C2 Sedans:

Well, none of them makes it to the top 20. The highest seller is Verna at 2932 units whereas a C2 compact SUV (Brezza) sells 11785 units. The numbers tell a lot about our market dynamics and shifting preferences.

4. HONDA:

With fall in sales by more than 80% MoM, Honda camp should worry as what went wrong with the New Civic. On positive note the Civic still leads the Octavia, Corolla and elantra.

5. NISSAN:

Their last hope Kicks appears not getting a warm welcome by the market. A good product failed only by poor brand perception.

6. JEEP:

Having presently settled at about 1200 units, Jeep has to get aggressive to survive the upcoming onslaught by the Hyundai Venue and MG Hector. Hard days ahead for Jeep in particular and FCA in general.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

An extremely rough and sluggish month for the Indian automobile industry.

Numbers clocked by XUV 300 during this turbulent times is amazing. Having said that, Ecosport did not lose its ground entirely in the numbers because of the surge in XUV 300.

VW Tiguan managed to sell just 1 unit!

Astonished with the drop of Marazzo and Celerio. Any guesses for the fall?

It will be interesting to see if Maruthi can clock the same number with Brezza after scraping the diesel engines (if 1.5 is not introduced in Brezza).

Kwid being the lone warrior for Renault's sustenance.

Looks like Tata is losing out in the cab segment. Bolt and Zest together aren't making 300 units!

The Brio's production has been stopped.

Someone please tell me what's with Fiat? Are they manufacturing and shipping out single digits numbers of the Linea every month?? If yes, why bother??

Cumulative Abarth numbers have been better for the past 6 months!

Agree! Also, it looks like the Fortuner/Endeavour buyers don't care much about the impending BS VI related uncertainties. I suspect people might buy more of these two before April 2020. There may not be any big year end discounts to be had.

Probably they were manufactured earlier but dispatched now based on the bookings.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I'm surprised to see Figo's sales go up, albeit pretty slowly. I suspect it's starting to eat into Polo's pie, which is in the top losers this month. It was managing about 1300 units every month, and now a sudden drop to 798.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Automobile industry is down, hit hard for sure. Interesting and contrasting news is GST collection is all time high to 113,000 crores in April 2019. Would be interesting to see how market reacts to diesel engine shutdown news by Maruti in the coming months. Surprisingly Maruti still selling cars like Brezza, S-cross in diesel only. They should have launched in Petrol Avatar at least 8-10 months back. Hope to see market bounce back after elections.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maybe someone has said this before.

I would like to add the export numbers to these manufacturer dispatches so as to know exactly how each manufacturer fares in the market. Many a manufacturer including Nissan and Ford thrives mostly on exports.

And on top of that, it's ultimately the revenue generated and the profit that matters most.

Re: April 2019 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Surprising to see Verna beating Ciaz and City in the race. I mean, what's that suddenly changed buyer's mindset to move to Verna instead of the other two?

And as far as SUVs are concerned, I would wait for June month's data. The sales could be subdued because of elections - if you win the election, you buy one for celebration and if you lose, you sell the existing one for sentimental reasons and buy a new one.

Tiguan is never going to achieve the respectable sales figure here but the reason for the above number could be because there were no vehicles available with the dealers and there are no kits at the plant as well. The Tiguan is immensely popular and in huge demand in the west and there is a lot of chatter about the delay in deliveries.

Tiguan is likely to be phased out and VW is likely to bring in the Tiguan Allspace.
