The car looks fun and has character but that price is whack! At 43.5 lakh, it's definitely going to be a hard sell. JCW or not, spending almost 4.5 million rupees for what's essentially a hot hatch isn't justified.

It'll be 52 - 53 lakhs on-road in Mumbai and higher still in Bangalore. A complete rip-off. Maybe just a handful of diehard Mini fans will buy this, while the rest of us can wait for it to hit the pre-worshipped market. Minis depreciate like stink!

A true blue hot hatch but at almost 5 big ones

It might be a great car with all the bells and whistles but is definitely going to remain just a halo car selling probably in the single or lower double digits.

Re: Mini John Cooper Works hatch launched at Rs. 43.50 lakh

At 43 lakh ex-showroom, the JCW is a full 9 lakh more than the Cooper S JCW on which it is based. That's a lot of money for a 30 odd power bump and a few features, isn't it?

Well.. I'm not so sure.

You see, the Cooper S is 9 lakh cheaper than the JCW in its absolute unspecified stock form, whereas the JCW comes pre-specified with a whole lot of goodies that would amount to at least 6 lakh, if not more. For example, the panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon HiFi, leather seats, special colours and 17" wheels would add up to 6 lakh. And then Mini offers something called the JCW package which is essentially a full exhaust system, a replacement filter and a factory tune that bumps the power up by 20 odd horsepower. Add all these options to a regular Cooper S and its price will match, or perhaps even exceed that of the new JCWs.

What's special about the JCW is that it's not just some kitted out Cooper S with a loud exhaust and a tune, it's a lot more than that!

If I'm not mistaken, the turbo and intercooler plumbing is entirely different, the internals (intake plenum, exhaust manifolds, camshafts etc.) are thoroughly revised. Even the exhaust is not the same as the one from the JCW package. The brakes are beefier and the suspension has been tweaked as well.

It's a lot like the Octavia 1.8 TSI vs. the Octavia vRS. Similar cars to the untrained eye, but a whole lot different under the skin.

So I believe the additional 9 lakh over and above the 'regular' Cooper S is justified.

However, it's a completely different matter that both cars are exorbitantly priced to begin with.

Needless to say, I will have my eyes peeled for one of these in the used market. A low mileage example will be around 25-30 lakh and is totally worth it at that price, in my opinion.

That exactly is the point here. We could justify the price difference between a regular Mercedes and an AMG or a 911 Carrera and a 911 GT3RS, but even the base Cooper is ridiculously priced. I'd be surprised to see more than a couple on the road at this price.

Re: Mini John Cooper Works hatch launched at Rs. 43.50 lakh

Thankfully this variant maintains its original class with the classic touch from the Issigonis era. About prices, the duties are so astronomical that I will not comment. And as GTO says , "these depreciate like stink" so their new car sales will be akin to some Mitsubishi models which don't sell here due to some other obvious reasons.

The worst looking Mini variants in the current range are the 5 door hatch, Countryman and Clubman, all with four doors and the tailgate. It's the Mahindra epidemic with their CJ 4 A chassis "exxxtendinggg" to unimaginable lengths that has travelled Westwards and has now afflicted the Mini!
