Next-gen Mahindra Scorpio | Now revealed as Scorpio-N

Mod Note: Our Mahindra Scorpio-N Review has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

The next generation Mahindra Scorpio (Codenamed: Z101) has been caught testing near Chengalpattu in Tamil Nadu.

The spy images suggest that the new Scorpio could get a lower roofline compared to the current model. The front appears to have a slatted Mahindra grille with wraparound headlamps on either side. This particular test vehicle does not seem to have a bonnet scoop. The SUV appears to have flared wheel arches and a slightly raked rear windshield.

Like the current model, the next-generation Scorpio is expected to be based on a ladder frame chassis. Reports suggest that it could be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine that produces 158 BHP. It is likely to be paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, while four-wheel drive could be available as an option.

Looks longer as per these pics?

The old upright stance is gone when seen from the side profile, though that was expected since the current Scorpio is cramped for room.

The new generation Scorpio looks wider, longer, and balanced in profile. Glad that the rear is not designed by a guillotine this time around. Appears a size bigger than the current generation too.

Hope that this one will fare a lot better in terms of crashworthiness, and some space in the front row will be appreciated. Looking forward to this one.

Agree with you. I like this shape better than the current one. But the devil is in the details. Hope their Indian design team hasn't got to mess up this one yet.

How are we sure this is the new Mahindra Scorpio?

Why are they testing the prototype in Tamil Nadu where they don't have a manufacturing facility?

The proportions do quite well. The lowered roofline is welcome. So people looking for a Ladder-frame, 4WD, 4-door, hardbody, practical SUV and not wanting to part with Fortuner/Endeavour money (infact almost half that), will still continue to have something that caters to them!!

Mahindra Research Valley, R&D of the automaker is located in Chennai. Mahindra test mules are a common sight in and around the city.

The side profile reminds me of a Force One.

I just don't get it. Why lose your USP?

If Merc can retain the boxy looks in a modern body (reference to the New G-class), why can't Mahindra?

Evolution; the current Scorpio design is not a very spacious or well balanced one . It’s too top heavy , this looks more balanced and should manifest itself with better road manners.

Evolution, agreed.
But evolution at what cost? At the cost of character? At the cost of what made you what you are (segment favourite)? Evolution at the cost of basic fundamentals?

I dont know if thats the right move.

All I know is that an XUV would dwarf this for height, and thats not going to help sales.

Looks more balanced than the outgoing model.
Looks like it will get collapsible twin seats in the boot, same as now.

I like the proportions of this new Scorpio. Wish Mahindra offers a tailgate mounted spare just as an accessory, I am sure it would look nicer and give the SUV an old-school look.

Looks proportionate and aggressive, true to its character. Lower roof line is part of the general automobile evolution. Current Scorpio is actually scary , if corners are taken with a bit of speed. This will hopefully reduce the body roll.

So BS6 will not kill the Scorpio brand. Even if it turns out to lose some of its character , it is heartening that Mahindra is protecting its brands , unlike Tata, who is killing off its iconic brand names.
