Land Rover to fit many of its existing engines to the Defender. The initial line-up will have a pair of petrols, one featuring mild-hybrid tech, and a couple of diesels. There’s a P300 four-cylinder turbo petrol with 296bhp – which is enough to take the Defender from 0-62mph in 8.1 seconds, while emitting 227g/km of CO2.

The two diesels are both four-cylinder units. The D200 has 197bhp for a 0-62mph time of 9.9 seconds, while the D240 produces 237bhp and takes 0.8 seconds off that time. Both diesels have the same efficiency figure, though, with NEDC-equivalent CO2 emissions of 199g/km and official fuel economy of 37.2mpg. These figures will change depending on spec and wheel size, however.

There’s also the P400, which mixes a straight-six turbocharged and supercharged petrol motor producing 395bhp with a
belt-integrated starter motor and a 48-volt lithium-ion battery. This is the fastest model in the range, with a 0-62mph time of 6.4 seconds. It returns as much as 29.4mpg and emits as little as 220g/km of CO2.

Re: Scoop! Next-gen Land Rover Defender spotted testing in India

I would be very pleased if they give the base deisel engine with the whole bells and whistles 4x4 tech and electronic suspension along with steel wheels and fabric ventilated seats. This package for about 40L in the 90 version and 50L in the 110, should the default dream for any offroader.

I'd be following this very carefully and this is one car on my wishlist.

I like it, it may not have any radical looks and might be cubist by design but the design is meant to remain timeless. I do like the attention to detail and its all round ability. Also, if you want pure utility, there's one for you, if you want to be an inverted snob and have luxury on the inside, it is possible.

Somehow, it looks cute and pert like a Yeti was

Re: Scoop! Next-gen Land Rover Defender spotted testing in India

Although I am not particularly impressed with the front end design as it loses out on the iconic old world charm, I am sure it has been designed with current pedestrian and other crash test parameters which the designers have to work around. What is most interesting is the fact that one can get a barebones honest to goodness offroader on which we don't have to worry about the expensive Alloy wheels getting scuffed or damaged during hard offloading trails. Something similar to this in the Mercedes G Wagon line up will be much appreciated by true blue off road enthusiasts. Kudos to Land Rover for striking a perfect balance between technological advancements and raw capability.

Looks futuristic, however, dare I say, it appears a bit too plasticky for my liking.

The old Defender looked properly rugged in comparison.

I like this new look. It does have glimpses of the legendary defender but with a far modern interiors. A lot more of this will sell. Love the backlight.

This looks too soft (or cute) as compared to the old one. They should have retained the rugged appeal of the original Defender.

I believe that panel is something to mimic the sliding windows of the original Defender 90 series although I may be wrong. The sliding window may be obsolete now but that along with the iconic alpine window on the edges of the roof is what gave the original defender its true character from the rear three quarters.

From what I recall, in the official launch video it was mentioned to be a load bearing pillar.

Quote:
Gerry McGovern, Land Rover’s Chief Design Officer, describes the feature at about the 16 minute mark in the debut video embedded below. “[The Defender’s] horizontal emphasis continues with the squared off wheel arches,” he says, “and this distinctive floating pillar, which is positioned over the rear wheel to reinforce that planted look.”
Quote:
The Signature Graphic (the square piece) is not featured on the U.S. 2020MY Defender 90 First Edition, but is shown in global assets. It’s fitted standard on the 110 due to this area carrying body structure in the longer 5-door variants (as seen in the attached infographic). The shorter 90 does not have this extra structure piece, so the Signature Graphic on the 90 is purely for aesthetics.
