re: 2nd-gen Maruti Celerio launched at Rs. 4.99 lakh

One thing we are forgetting is that the Celerio is one of the most favourite cars in the hatchback Taxi segment.

So I think, that's where the "rationale" behind all this extreme cheapskate cost cutting comes from.

I have a feeling that the car will look slightly better in real life than what is seen in pictures. Most of these shots are wideangle and probably makes it look worse and more bulbous in areas than it actually is.

Remember how everyone reacted to the distorted spyshot of the XUV700?

But that interior is absolutely crap. It oozes cheapness from a mile away. Quite opposite to what other OEMs are trying by making cheap cars look more premium.

Seems like it. Definitely placed below the WagonR, unlike the previous generation. The interiors and the missing 1.2l engine option are signs of it.

Don't want to sound like a broken tape recorder, but seeing more videos of the Celerio makes me. Why oh why couldn't they make a practical cubbyhole above the glovebox ? This just seems to be a stylish curve/ depression. Could have made the space useful.

re: 2nd-gen Maruti Celerio launched at Rs. 4.99 lakh

Today morning, I checked the ex show room prices of Celerio and it's competitors as listed below:
Celerio : 4.65 lacs ~ (last known price)
Santro : 4.76 lacs ~
Wagon-R : 4.93 lacs ~
Tiago : 4.99 lacs ~

So, Suzuki has already positioned the current Celerio lower to Wagon-R. I think they will maintain this gap with the new Celerio as well. With the new design, I feel the car has moved more towards A-Star than the current generation Celerio with its bulbous shape and all.

re: 2nd-gen Maruti Celerio launched at Rs. 4.99 lakh

Last generation Celerio was still a manageable looking car but this 1 turned into ugliest 1. Same thing Maruti did with jellybean Zen by launching Zen Estilo. But this will sell in good numbers because it’s a hatchback with Maruti Suzuki branding. If not in top 10, it will surely going to be in top 15 selling cars. But if given a option, I’ll go for Tata Tiago with eyes closed. I can’t see myself driving a ugly looking car. And those power windows switches, specially for rear windows are completely out of place.

Not sure if they want to store a bottle or a mini oxygen cylinder. Jokes apart, what sort of space benefit will thinner door pads give. No one wants to fill four people in the back bench to make use of whatever cabin width is available. The power window switches are located at arm level and not even close to the thigh or leg level. Hence, the theory of liberating space is a load of bull from the marketing team in order to cover up for the senseless engineering I havent roasted a Maruti product till now as much as I did to the Celerio so will restrain myself from doing more. On a highly exaggerated note, one might end up getting confused between the ORVM switch and the engine start stop switch and you know what happens later<crossed smiley limit>

re: 2nd-gen Maruti Celerio launched at Rs. 4.99 lakh

Maruti is getting worse by the launch. The new Celerio design looks so forced. It's like they ran out of shapes and just randomly changing shapes of headlights, grill, tail lamps.

There's no sharp character line everything is rounded off and excessively done. It looks more like an Alto replacement than a Celerio.

And I'm not even going to get started with the crass placement of request sensors, pull up grab handles (old Celerio was better!) and the cost cutting in power window buttons.

This is a lame model by Maruti. In comparison Tata is pulling out all the stops with Punch.

re: 2nd-gen Maruti Celerio launched at Rs. 4.99 lakh

One thing that we should remember is that the Celerio brand is where MSIL tests out its novel stuff. Remember AGS and the horrendous 2 cyl diesel mill, drive by wire tech, etc. Some like the AGS went on to be hits while the diesel mil is best forgotten.

So, this is a test platform for them. They are experimenting with weird styling, and offering frankenstein tech like the request sensors paired with flap handles, and the afterthought rear PWs. If accepted, we can zee Alto 800 coming with such stuff...

Oh lord ! They could have just put 4 wheels on a potato and called it whatever they wanted ! I know there is generally a 4-5 yr cycle for a car to see the light of day. But if other OEM can future proof their cars, have absolutely no idia what Maruti smokes.

That center console looks hideous. Almost as if that music system was an afterthought.

Unless they have some ultra aggressive pricing up their sleeves, even Maruti Suzuki may struggle selling this contraption.

ABS with EBD and Brake Assist standard on Lxi?

Now that is pretty neat! I can't think of another hatchback in this price range who offers it.

I hope you are not mistaking "EBD" and "Brake Assist" for Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

"EBD" is nothing but Electronic Brake-force Distribution which is a small sub-function of ABS itself, and replaces a mechanical proportioning valve. Also I cannot think of a modern car without a mechanical brake assist function within the brake booster. If it was "Hydraulic Brake Assist", it would have been a different discussion altogether as that requires active pressure build-up (and hence an "Electronic Stability Control" hardware).

To cut a long story short, these functions are nothing new and definitely available on even the cheapest cars sold in India (due to regulatory requirement), including the bare bones Alto.

Thank you for explanation. I had indeed mistaken it for being a supplementary system. Oh well!
