If wishes were horses, beggars would ride and cars would run on fresh air. But Guy Negre, a French inventor, is the kind of bloke who doesn't think much of cliches. For that one reason alone, ten years ago, he started to work in the south of France, a region better known for luxury villas on an engine that would run on, well, thin air.

Now, Tata Motors, India's largest automobile company, is enamoured by his research and have joined hands with Negre's family-owned company, Moteur Developpement International (MDI), in an attempt to bring this 'clean' technology home.

Good to know even TATA is interested in this new technology. I hope this matures into something good and useful.

It seems the world is desperately looking for all the alternative ways to Fossil fuel.

A while ago Ford or GM wanted to use compressed air or liquid to store the regenerative energy instead of batteries for a hybrid application. Didn't see much progress on that and they have given up on that. The question is how much can you compress air or some gas and what is the storage space that you are looking at.

It might be good for a golf cart or some similar kind of application. Scaling it for a decent auto application might be difficult.

Although there is no official word on when the car will be commercially manufactured for India, reports say that it will be sooner than later.
The car -- MiniCAT -- could cost around Rs 350,000 in India and would have a range of around 300 km between refuels. The cost of a refill would be about Rs 90.

Two technologies have been developed to meet different needs:The single energy engines will be available in both MiniCATs and CityCATs. These engines have been conceived for city use, where the maximum speed is 50 km/h and where MDI believes polluting will soon be prohibited.
The duel energy engine, on the other hand, has been conceived as much for the city as the open road and will be available in all MDI vehicles. The engines will work exclusively with compressed air while it is running under 50 km/h in urban areas. But when the car is used outside urban areas at speeds over 50 km/h, the engines will switch to fuel mode. The engine will be able to use gasoline, gas oil, bio diesel, gas, liquidized gas, ecological fuel, alcohol, etc. Both engines will be available with 2, 4 and 6 cylinders, When the air tanks are empty the driver will be able to switch to fuel mode, thanks to the car's on board computer.
MDI explains that 90m3 of compressed air is stored in fibre tanks. The engine is powered by compressed air, stored in a carbon-fiber tank at 30 MPa (4500 psi). The tank is made of carbon-fiber in order to reduce its weight. The engine has injection similar to normal engines, but uses special crankshafts and pistons, which remain at top dead center for about 70 degrees of the crankshaft's cycle; this allows more power to be developed in the engine. The expansion of this air pushes the pistons and creates movement. The atmospheric temperature is used to re-heat the engine and increase the road coverage. The air conditioning system makes use of the expelled cold air. Due to the absence of combustion and the fact there is no pollution, the oil change is only necessary every 50 000 km.

This creates a doubt in my mind ...Will tata's one lakh car be air powered ? because TATA's one lakh car is also coming up some time in 2008.

Check this link out for a sort of TD on the Air car and other reviews. WHile there do check the "Beyond Tomorrow" clip for another Air engine technology developed in Australia. Good stuff.

Looks really promising. So what are the chances of we driving around in pollution free, cheap to run but ugly (TATA) cars.

Ugly TATA cars? Sorry.. I beg to differ, I think there is nothing wrong with Indica/Indigo looks.

Ugly looking and it is TATA cars:confused:

Indica : Considering that it is nearly decade old design, even today one of the best looking hatch backs.

Indigo : Same as Indica

Safari : The best looking SUV below 10L

Ace : Much better than the others like omini(cargo), Minidor, etc.,
