Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

Nissan Motor to fire 1,700 staff in India.

Quote:
As the car maker hits a decade low profits globally, it has taken a decision to fire about 12,500 workers across the world over the next three years. Of these, over 6,400 workers have already been asked to leave and the balance workforce will be informed in the coming two to three years. India accounts for about 13.5% of the people fired

This was inevitable. Nissan has been having a pretty bad run in India, mostly self-inflicted.
I think Nissan is waiting to see what eventually happens with its alliance with Renault, given all the recent incidents involving Carlos Ghosn. If they part ways, then Nissan could make a solo come back after a few years. And if they choose to continue the alliance as is, I would not be surprised if Nissan exited India leaving Renault to manage the business, since Renault has some promising vehicles like the Triber, even the next gen Duster in 2021, and even the Kwid etc. whereas Nissan does not even have one car that has seen some sort of decent success.

Re: Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

Bad luck for the employees , coming as it were in a bad time for auto industry in general. Every other manufacturer is going through this phase. I am not sure which category of workers this move affects. If it is in the shop floor and support staff , they may be able to find work in non auto segments. Problem would be middle management who need to find a similar opening to manage their finances. This may also unleash a domino effect on other ancillary units that depend on Nissan.

They were slow to respond to the market. Not to mention their service was nothing to write home about. They have some competent products but do not have the brand value to pull out the numbers in the higher categories.

Nissan has great products but was let down by marketing I feel. Nothing looked well researched, unlike the traditional Jap approach to business. Also, the strategy of mirroring Renault products never struck me as an intelligent move (in the same market). This is certainly a self-inflicted injury!

Re: Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

Nissan may need less than 100 employees for the kind of sales they manage every month. This does not mean that all other employees can be laid off. The major culprits were the decision makers who have failed the company, fire them mercilessly. This lay off can push the inevitable for few months only.

Nissan to discontinue slow selling models globally.

Quote:
The product reductions will focus mainly on small vehicles, including emerging-market Datsun models

Countries that were part of the ‘Nissan Power 88’ strategic plan will see their operations downsized.

Bringing back Datsun from the dead was part of the Power 88 plan of Ghosn.

Quote:
India, where Nissan has been struggling since its entry in 2005, was one of the countries to benefit from the Power 88 plan, which was formulated under the then CEO Carlos Ghosn
Quote:
The loss-making Indian entity of Nissan Motor Co may be on the list of countries where the Japanese giant will scale down operations by shuttering at least one production line

Re: Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

Any person losing job due to no mistake of his/her own is sad. I hope they quickly get something else to earn with.

I'm hoping it didn't actually come as a surprise to those 1700 and most would have been looking around already, waiting for the inevitable news one day.

Nissan I think has lost the plot altogether in India. No matter what it does - it can no longer survive as an auto brand in India. Its products are dated & the timelines it will take to actually bring products of "current era" will mean others will have even newer products here.

Renault-Nissan tried to dump old products in India as "Premium" & make profits. They didn't see that it wasn't working. They needed to treat this market with respect. They are now paying the price for it. Newer players like ISUZU are doing well. MG and KIA are going to write history probably. But experienced folks like Renault-Nissan failed big time.

Its time they gave up on this market. Nissan should continue to make cars in India plant for pure export purposes & stop passenger car sales business here altogether. Now is the time to stop this misery. If General Motors couldn't survive as a viable business here, Nissan can't either.

The sooner this happens the better as that way no more new customers will be stuck with Nissan cars that will suddenly lose resale value.

Re: Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

1700 people are jobless and in this period of recession in Auto Mobile industry, its going to be hard for them to find a new job. Going by the regular trend elsewhere, its going to be mid managers to senior managers level employees a major chunk in the 1700 odd list who will be hit hard.

Quoting myself from the July'19 sales thread, this was inevitable. Nissan Sunny was the only car which had some impact in the market. They never looked serious after that. Their JV doesn't seem to work. Their formula of releasing a car, rebadging it in the name of other JV partner and sell the second one on a higher price is a massive mistake. None of the second release is a hit in the market.

There has been no big capable car launch and they haven't created any interest in their portfolio. Added to that dealer closures, mediocre After Sales and Service have dented Nissan's Image.

We need a separate thread on What's Next for Nissan similar to Honda (Honda India : The Way Forward)

Feel bad for the retrenched workforce. What was their fault that the marketing and product development team did not have their ears to the ground! Senior management has their golden parachutes ready, but it's mid to low level employees who face the brunt.

Re: Nissan to lay off 1,700 employees in India

This is going to have cascading effect on the market. 1700 less people have money and the entire workforce of Nissaan, Renault, Skoda, VW etc will keep their purse tight. Not to mention the ancillary units people will be even more cautious.
This cycle will hit the market bad.

I hope they have some decent severance package in place for the employees
