Rumour: Toyota to cut diesel engine powered cars, going Hybrid for new vehicles

Toyota likely to shift strategy: Hybrids to replace Diesel variants.

Diesel engines likely to give way to petrol hybrid in next Gen. Innova model.

Quote:
Diesel engine option for the next replacement of Innova seems off the cards right now. Toyota will develop the next generation of the Innova with the hybrid system and given the stricter emission and fuel efficiency norms this strategy makes perfect sense
Quote:
Toyota’s portfolio is very diesel-heavy and this will also help Toyota push its hybrid technology in India
Quote:
Toyota like other vehicles manufacturers is expected to focus on gasoline and hybrid combination in their vehicles even in C-segment
-Potential move part of Toyota’s strategy to switch towards eco-friendly vehicles, push hybrid tech in India

- Toyota’s focus is expected to push hybrids in India even in bigger vehicles and try to exit diesel

The Japanese Trio ( Toyota , Honda and Suzuki) will pursue Hybrid vehicles irrespective of the unfavorable GST slab it is currently in.

parallel development of EV's will continue but they will try to have Hybrids transition to EV as BEV technology matures in India.

Quote:
Toyota Motor Corp. may discontinue diesel engines on its popular Innova multipurpose vehicles in India in the next two to three years
Next generation model of the Innova is expected to be introduced in either 2021 or 2022.

Well the only shift they will do is they will kill the 1.4 diesel in whatever cars its available at. I dont see them killing Innova diesel or any other diesel car except this.

Innova and Fortuner Petrol sales are so low that they are almost "made to order" variants now.

Toyota follows a 10 year life cycle change for its ladder on frame models! Impossible that the next generation Innova will come by 2022! The GD series diesel engines are already being used for Euro 6 markets, I don't see an issue in them selling it here as well.

Even if it increases the prices by 1Lakh, people will still buy them, there is no competition for the Innova!

This is the strategy that I feel car makers should adopt. In the current roughly 1 lakh premium that a diesel engine commands over the petrol, a 48v hybrid system can be fitted instead to bridge the gap between the pros diesels have over pertrols namely efficiency/mileage and some more torque while at the same time producing lower emissions.
Diesel if necessary can come above this at the roughly 2 lakh premium that is expected after BS6 and maybe a mild hybrid diesel can have a 15 year life Vs the proposed 10years

I hope they come with Liva hybrid or any new hatchback with hybrid. IMO there will be a very good market for this segment.

Love Toyota but this is a company which cannot even bring in tech as simple as Android Auto across it's range and someone wants to make us believe they'll replace diesels with modern hybrids. Big whoop. This is just some harmless virtue signalling. Their best selling Fortuners and Innovas aren't going anywhere for now.

Could be a good interim move. In terms of net/effective fuel efficiency, the hybrids will match the diesels. In terms of the price, at least globally, there isn't much difference between a diesel car and a hybrid one, so that should work well for most customers.

Toyota has a very matured hybrid technology. Wonder why they did not think of implementing this earlier. Seems like a very sensible thing to do.

I don't think Toyota is doing this by choice.

Diesels that survive the BS6 onslaught will still face the music in the real time emission norms coming later; the great Indian urban crawl will ensure that.

TOYOTA to stop selling 'small' diesel cars in India Post BSVI Shift.

- The 1.4-litre diesel-engined versions of cars like the Etios, Etios Liva, Etios Cross and Corolla Altis will be axed.

- Fortuner SUV and Innova Crysta MPV, those will continue with their diesel engines.

I wondering what will happen to the taxi segment who relay on Etios twins. Will they shift to new technology? or will they stop selling Etois twins and sell Glanza with Maruti 1.5L diesel engine?

They are going to stop selling the Etios twins apparently. Because they don't conform to the pedestrian protection norms either.

Re: Rumour: Toyota to cut diesel engine powered cars, going Hybrid for new vehicles

I'd say this is a good move. Innova is a car made for emerging markets and might be a good car to start the kickoff of using hybrid technology for India. The platform is big-packaging the hybrid powertrain should be easy.

I won't be surprised with the 2021-22 timeframe (although it'll not be a new generation.) There was an article that Toyota engineered this platform with hybrid powertrains in mind.

Such news shows the far-reaching consequences of VWs dieselgate.

I hope they move to plug in hybrids to help people who use it within city to go to office and such work. That will also help in getting ready for charging at homes and to familiarize people with plugging in.

Range doesnt have to be that great either and govt should subsidize such cars.

Re: Rumour: Toyota to cut diesel engine powered cars, going Hybrid for new vehicles

Toyota sells more Innovas monthly than combined sales of rest offerings

In terms of profits selling one Fortuner, or one Innova is better than selling four or five Etios isn’t it

Glanza is contributing 2k units per month.

Toyota and Suzuki partnership for india 🇮🇳 can be a game changer if and only if they provide us with “Hybrids” that’s they key to successful partnership.

Hybrids are ideal replacement for diesels good mileage ,no range anxiety hybrids can serve as a buffer for Indian car market until Customer ,Manufacturer are Ev Ready.

I still feel Ev ecosystem may take four to five years to mature in india

Personally I expect Toyota to buy out Suzuki and then be the No.1 in India.

Re: Rumour: Toyota to cut diesel engine powered cars, going Hybrid for new vehicles

As if Toyota has a plethora of small diesel engines lying around. Other than the 2.0 and 2.2 diesels in Europe which were phased out ages ago, the 1ND 1.4 is the only small diesel engine that Toyota has. In fact, Toyota has been using BMW diesels for the past few years, before phasing them out whole for hybrids.

But it's not as if Toyota can't upgrade the 1ND to euro VI standards. It had already done it a couple of years ago.

Thought so.
The Etios bonnet is at a sharp angle, with it almost being the first point of contact. Good for crash safety I guess, given the bonnet is of strong build, but less so for pedestrian safety. There is no soft plastic bumper or rounded off bonnet.
