Top Story - Bosch BSMotoring Mileage Run 2007 - Business Standard Motoring

The results of the Bosch BSM Mileage Run 2007 which was held yesterday are out and they reveal some incredible fuel efficiency figures for various automobiles in real world conditions. The Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi, for instance, managed 25.63 kilometres to the litre, while the Hyundai Verna 1.6 petrol clocked a surprising 22.14 kpl. Even a large, luxury SUV like the Nissan X-Trail extracted almost 21 km to the litre, while the Mercedes-Benz C 220 CDI managed 16.33 kpl.

The Bosch Business Standard Motoring Mileage run 2007 was a first-of-its-kind event where car manufacturers competed with each other for attaining maximum fuel efficiency from their cars. The objective of the exercise is to help prospective car buyers rely on real world fuel efficiency figures obtained by the participants of the Mileage Run 2007, instead of going by economy figures obtained through 'ideal driving conditions'.

Automobile manufacturers such as Ford, Hyundai, SkodaAuto, Mahindra & Mahindra, DaimlerChrysler, General Motors India, Nissan and Audi participated in this unique event. The event ran as per motorsport precision and followed a TSD (Time, Speed, Distance) format, which ensured that the participants drove their cars at normal speeds (instead of crawling and coasting to get better mileage). A series of disclosed time controls ensured that penalties were levied on those participants slowing down excessively.

The Mileage Run took the participants through a 450 km route that included city traffic, suburban traffic and the curvy National Highway 17, which had a ghat section also thrown in. Participants had to stick to rules and even had to stop to pay toll. A strict pre-event scrutiny ensured that all the fuel in the cars, including the fuel feed system, was drained and measured quantity of fuel was given to complete the route. As expected, cars ran dry towards the finish. Each car had a minimum of two passengers (one observer in addition to the driver).

How come Maruti wasn't participating in this?

Even the tatas are not to be seen!!

Amazing. My RX135 gets only 35kms/littre!!. Sure they have not tested with full load. Wonder if there are mods in engine.

Anyone noticed? Mahindra Bolero DI returned mileage of
18.44 kpl where as Mahindra Scorpio 2.6 CRDe returned
just 15.18 kpl! Most would think that CRDI engines are more powerful and efficient...

And why is CRDI Verna not seen here??? It would have been interesting to measure it against Ford Fiesta TDCI which has retunred milage of 25.63 kpl.

Another surprise is GM UV-A returning 20.28 Kpl. There are too many Santros and Swifts on road. May be time for hatch lovers to try something new; this time from GM.

Because of the reputation of BSMlol:

As per report conditions were to be as near to real lifet stop & go conditions in a typical city(in India I hope). How they could get such FE?
Is there special technique that we do not know? Can experts on TEAM-BHP explain how to get such or near FE in Mumbai like conditions?
