It isn't so. Maruti makes great dependable, affordable cars with service and spares. But their marketing division is out to lunch. Cases in point, the Ignis and the above cited S-Cross. Why Maruti thought these would sell in India is a mystery. Why Maruti thought Jimny would NOT sell here is an enigma. And where in the world is the new Grand Vitara, inquiring minds want to know? A 5-6 seater Jimny would rival Mahindra Bolero (coming with a new BSVI motor, maybe soon). Bolero is going to win this one, hardly any development costs and retooling to offset while Maruti would have to do major proctology to the rear end of Jimny to winkle 5 doors out of it. Maruti ain't gonna spend the bucks to do that. Maybe they should, but they ain't gonna. The new Jimny is not the old Gypsy. It's gonna go nearer 13-15 lakhs than a pipe-dream 9 lakhs. Weak rupee is part of the reason. Yamma, yamma, Spalding, Palak...come forward and deliver us unworthy mud-pluggers from those who would cut off our ball joints and render us unto 2wd. | ![]() Source: https://www.motoring.com.au/is-this-...ew-car-123239/ A news from Australia: "Almost new Jimnys are quoted 40% more price than the new one which is having 12 months waiting period"! But this may be a thing of the past once Jimny starts exports from India. |

| ![]() Splendid to receive even more confirmation from the government itself. It would have been awesome if the army also bought Jimnys and decked them out with roof mounted guns. Is there a big aftermarket community for Jimny mods? Most popular offroaders tend to have big aftermarket support. That naturally aspirated engine has potential to be faster I think! |

| ![]() Source: https://www.autocarindia.com/car-new...-launch-416688 Larger, 5-door Suzuki Jimny being readied for India launch. "In addition to the standard 3-door Jimny, Maruti Suzuki will also manufacture a new 5-door version at its Gujarat plant. And it’s the latter that will go on sale in India. A larger cabin and the addition of rear doors will make this 5-door Jimny suitable to family buyers but what will be interesting to see is how the stretched dimensions, particularly the longer wheelbase, impact the off-roader’s ability in the rough. Size aside, the Jimny 5-door will be no different to the 3-door model in its basic ingredients. The 5-door Jimny will be built on a ladder-frame chassis, feature rigid axles at both ends, and employ four-wheel drive with low-range transfer case. The India-spec 5-door will come powered by the 105hp, 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine that can also be found in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Ertiga and Vitara Brezza. Manufacture of the 3-door Jimny is set to commence at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, around June 2020, with the entire production earmarked for exports. Production of the 5-door Jimny will commence six months later with the output shared between India and export markets. Maruti will retail the Jimny 5-door at its premium Nexa outlets with prices to start just under Rs 10 lakh." Last edited by romeomidhun : 27th March 2020 at 17:00. |

| ![]() Why Maruti Why!!! Classic Maruti act of chasing volumes, though have to accept with a heavy heart the fact that a 5 door Jimny will always be more practical for the Indian market. Though the article says 4X4 drivetrain will remain, that is so uncharacteristic of Maruti to do. Hope Maruti doesn't find new ways to cut costs. And since we are talking about a 5 door Jimny here, don't think Maruti will get its in-house FE benchmarks to pass the Jimny with the 1.5l petrol engine. Expecting heavy weight loss and corners cut. Or fast-track the BS6 version of the 1.5 diesel. But then, the optimist side of me wishes that Maruti may not play much with the Jimny, since they already have the Brezza for volume chasing. |

| ![]() Not again Why not sell the global product as it is. If Force Motors with a non existent market sells Gurkha in so many variants why can't Maruti do the same with Jimny. Sell the 3 Door along with the 5 door. Even if they sell 1000, 3-Door models over the life of the product, it should be good enough to create the Halo effect. I will repeat it again Maurti should think of making Jimny their premium product. Last edited by indian21r : 27th March 2020 at 19:30. |

| ![]() Whatever be the case , won't this become the most affordable 4X4 one can buy in India ? I just hope it will outshine Gypsy in all aspects since Jimny is effectively replacing it. I would love to have a diesel motor in it though. Down the line , we would see the army too upgrading its fleet of Gypsies with Jimny. |

Senior - BHPian ![]() | ![]() I have seen the new Jimny in the flesh. It's a very short vehicle. I don't think they could have achieved any meaningful volumes in India if priced above the Brezza. The reason being, the Brezza is much more practical and matches almost everything the average Indian needs much better than the Jimny. The Jimny is more of a lifestyle vehicle. It's really tiny when seen in person. That's probably why Maruti is going in for the 5 door version for India, although I would have preferred they launch both the models and let the customers choose. The Kinetic yellow is absolutely smashing. |

Of course, I would have preferred to have the 3 door Jimny as a niche vehicle, but logically, I find it hard to fault Maruti if they seek to launch a car with a better acceptance level for the Indian market given the present scenario. | |

| ![]() Since Suzuki had to discontinue Jimny in Europe because of emission rules but they can't do so permanently and there's a news about the development of a 1.2L turbo petrol engine, I am almost sure the Jimny will be relaunched there with that 1.2L engine. Suzuki's 1L BoosterJet engine engine produces 110BHP. The 1.4L BoosterJet engine produces 140 BHP. So we can safely assume the 1.2L BoosterJet engine will produce approximately 120BHP. The 5-door Jimny most probably will be less than 4m in size; it can either be powered by the 1.5L K-series (no tax benefit) or 1.2L turbo engine (with tax benefit but the additional cost of Turbo). But to price the Jimny under 10L by availing tax benefit, they may have to launch it with the 90BHP DualJet engine from DZire. A Jimny / Gypsy without the spare wheel on the tail gate? ? The classic design is unthinkable without it. Last edited by romeomidhun : 2nd April 2020 at 10:20. |
