Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

A family friend owns couple of Suzuki Dealerships (Area and Nexa, both) and says that Suzuki does not have immediate plans to launch the Jimmy in India. Might come out in q1/q2 2023.

Have heard a very bright Jimmy might be landing on our shores very very soon

As per the new safety regulations to be rolled out, only front facing seats are permitted. A two door with long wheelbase and side facing seats will not clear the safety hurdle.

More so, MSIL looks at family utility and not simply looks, the only exception in last several years was a 2 door Zen.

Jimny with family + fun triggers a 5 door configuration.

The irony here is that Jimny's leave our shores in order to reach other countries as for African, Middle East and European markets the Jimny is produced in India.

On the other hand Asia, Oceania and the Japanese domestic market are served by the Suzuki plant back home in Japan.

Very true. In fact the cars have a plaque reading "Made in Gurgaon, India"

We even have the honor of being the only country to produce the 4th gen Jimny outside the Suzuki plant in Kosai, Japan. But we still do not get to buy the car we ourselves produce, we thought selling tin cans masquerading as cars was bad enough but Maruti Suzuki continues to disappoint us even more.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

The Suzuki Jimny could make a return to the UK in passenger-car form with five doors and an electrified powertrain.

It was reportedly seen running with its engine off, suggesting some sort of hybrid powertrain is under the bonnet.

Quote:
It's expected that a Jimny hybrid would use a powertrain similar to that offered in the Suzuki Vitara. Options include a 127bhp 1.4-litre turbo petrol mild hybrid and a 113bhp 1.5-litre full hybrid.

The current 2-door Jimny is set up with a front facing rear bench too.

But here's hoping they do finally bring it here. In limited numbers maybe, but it would surely sell like hot cakes at a reasonable price.
There was a 5 door 1000cc rear wheel drive version of It in Indonesia back in the 80's and 90's

Was this a factory option? Asking since that looks way too crude for a factory option.

Such conversions (adding rear doors) were quite common even in India.

I didn't think it was a factory option. The only Indonesian market specific model of the SJ40 was the Suzuki Katana which was a 4x2 variant made because of rising taxes in Indonesia on 4x4 vehicles at that time.

But then I found this obscure image on the Wayback Machine, the Katana Corsica Long in the bottom left seems to be the 5 door Indonesian Gypsy in question. I investigated further and it seems that the Katana Indomobil is the original factory Suzuki Jimny 4x2. Looks like there were body shops/companies in Indonesia in the 80's and 90's that specialized in making custom bodies for the sj40 Jimny and if you lived in Indonesia and bought a Jimny/Katana in the 80's and 90's you could send to these specialized body shops that modified your new car into a 5 door or wagon or whatever you wanted.

The 5 door in question, the "Katana Corsica Long" was offered by a company called "Alexander body company".

The 4x4 version (called the Super Jimny) also had these custom bodies that were offered by specialized body shops like the it's 4x2 twin.

If it's on CARNET, it'll go back within 6 months. In all probabilities the owner is driving around different countries with his beauty.

I was looking at some spy shots of the alleged 5 door Jimny, from what I see I think this is going to be a LWB 3 Door with additional space for the rear passengers and more boot space as opposed to being a 5 door.
