Totally understand the pragmatism of launching a 5 door here in India but I too wish they would launch the 3 door. Lovely, compact ride for a specific target audience who value performance and understatedness over bling. Would totally separate it from the Thar as a positioning. Saw a couple of 3 doors scooting through traffic in Thailand recently and they looked absolutely mint! I would love one of those.
I also wish that 3 door be launched, and it will be a serious option for me. Still, I will check out the 5 door next once it is launched. It's already on my shortlist

Is this the old K15 engine with a turbo and motor?
Or have they reworked on the K14 boosterjet and bored it?

Disappointed that the transmissions remain the same.

Yes, you are correct, Jimmy 3 door has rigid axles in both front and rear similar to the Wrangler, so it can handle. Below is the snapshot from.Suzuki Jimmy website
But I am not sure about the 5 door version.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

So finally the jimny 3 door (via Dubai carnet) visits Learn Offroad for a proper mud bath.
I’m blown away by the nimbleness of the vehicle.

A busy weekend for me. I’ll post detailed opinions and videos soon

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Guys,

I wonder whether we should abandon the idea of Jimny, and therefore discussions around it on this thread unless we have tangible information. At least I am beginning to get annoyed with ‘what could have been, but is not!!??’

Has it been confirmed that Jimny will be launched at auto expo 2023?

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

If there is an Auto Expo 2023, you can be sure of a LWB / 5 Door Jimny taking a bow there. The only speculation is the engine it would come equipped with. I hope it is not the anaemic K15C engine. Knowing Suzuki, they will definitely tune it for efficiency.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Supposedly, Jimny 5 door does get launched here in India at the AutoExpo or whatever. What will be the expected price of the 4x4 AT?

Or will Maruti Suzuki not offer an automatic with the Jimny or the above combination of 4x4 and AT?

These numbers sound fantastic to me. Despite being a 5-door version, it still is a bit smaller than the current 3-door Thar, except for the 100mm extra wheelbase
Thar dimensions: 3,985 mm L x 1,855 mm W x 1,844-1,896 mm H, Wheelbase 2450mm.

The only fly in the ointment is the 4speed AT, this should get a 6-speed Torque converter!

Nevertheless, if priced right, this will sell in huge numbers and a no-nonsense go-anywhere car

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

I doubt the dimensions of the 5 door are correct. Since even the older gypsy is 4010mm long with just 3 door, smaller wheelbase and really skinny bumper.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

The Gypsy had a long rear over hang. So long that it fouled the departure angle and so many used to chop it short. I think the international Gypsy was shorter in length.

The Jimny dimensions being shared seem to be spot on according to almost all magazines and other automotive portals.
Only thing in question is that people are wishing for a more powerful engine, which i hope Maruti Suzuki does consider. But if Maruti Suzuki continues being their true old self then i highly doubt we’ll get anything more powerful. Or we may be blessed with a more powerful motor after another 5 years of waiting

The Gypsy was envisaged more as a go-anywhere hauler of people and materials. Hence its 4010 mm length. Till date it has a wonderfully spacious rear cargo area with the two long bench seats folded up. Or with these folded down, it regularly carries 3 + 3 or even 4+4 persons sitting on those benches.

The concept of leisure off road hardly existed in India in the 1980’s except amongst the really privileged. For normal people a 4x4 vehicle was a necessary means of commuting and transport. Especially, the Army, the Police, the Air Force, the Navy, the Forest service, and all those governmental departments along with all those regular people living in the high snowy mountains, the deep jungle areas, the monsoon prone plantation districts and the deserts. Basically anywhere in the hinterland of our country.

Indeed, the International spec Samurai was a shorter vehicle as were the various generations of the Jimny including this latest generation one. In fact, given the above facts, it was a constant source of surprise to me, that when the government repeatedly incentivised the sub 4m category of vehicles, the Maruti folks never took advantage by knocking off just 11cms from the Gypsys length and thus seizing the price advantage.

There were indeed several Gypsys which were ‘cut short’ - they would chop off nearly 8-10 inches from the rear and suddenly the whole character of the Gypsy as an off roader, would emerge. But these weren't a very common sight because the chop-shop job didn’t exactly come cheap, wih the slight re-siting of the fuel hoses and the tinkering needed and so on.

And yes indeed, the new Jimny’s short overhangs and overall proportions, from all the reviews, seem to be absolutely spot on. It will indeed be a great vehicle to be able to buy in India.

For perspective, here are some pictures of my normal Gypsy (s) as a cargo carrier, then a side on pic and a pic of a shortened Gypsy. (This one was here in my neighbourhood and that’s the picture I’ve attached.)

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Somehow, when I look at the 5 door Jimny, I am reminded of the Trax. Whereas the 3 door looked rather cute.
