re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Someone, (quite reliable), says, 5-door, long wheelbase Jimny under development for India. Will be marketed and sold under the Gypsy brand - which has a phenomenal brand recognition in India.
Serious engineering efforts are on to package the 1.5L Suzuki diesel in it too. The basic versions of this will target the Bolero clientele and the posh versions pitched at personal segment buyers. Petrol versions will probably carry the 1.2L K12C engine.
No word on 4x4 with transfer case though. Apparently development costs vs Potential Sales has again reared its head as a spoilsport.

May be a late 2020 or early 2021 launch if all goes well.

Let's wait and watch what finally transpires.

re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Oh. Wow!
I did have a chance to test ride Jimny Sierra when I was in Japan a couple of months ago. It would definitely be a head-turner in our Indian roads. MSIL should launch both the (2-door/4-seater) and (5-door/5-seater).

No wonder if this gets launched in India, We can see a couple of G-Wagon kind of mods on Jimny.

Thanks.

This is more in line of what Nikkei said. Maruti hasn't tapped the rural segment which Bolero is ruling for years. and this will be based on Jimny and not actual jimny, may turn out totally different with longer, wider body and no 4 X 4 mechanism.

Jimny in current form does not make any business sense for a company which is already under pressure due to current market dynamics.

And then there is this, a petrol 4WD pulling out a bigger SUV.

Grand Vitara is a segment above these cars. Also, there is no model of Grand Vitara since 2005. What they do have is Vitara, which may do well if it comes to India. But Maruti has shown no interest in 20L+ cars.

Exactly, where the issue lies. The backseats are extremely cramped and once they are in place, the boot space is limited to a micro 85litres.

Having driven it, it's extremely slow but then again its always been slow even when the gulf markets had the 1.3L. The transmission is pretty much a carryover and cmon...still a 5M / 4A in this age? The transmission is sluggish at best, and the auto is worse. It will definitely work in a low-speed setting like off-road, but on-road, its not really going to be a fun drive if you aim to have a heavy right foot.

The saddest part is the price. At AED 65,000 ( INR 12.5Lakhs ), its is grossly overpriced. I admit that it's brilliant off-road ( the old and the new) and has got a nice mini G-Wagen look but still it's too high a price. Unfortunately, they haven't linked it to any Diesel options in any market, so that's another area that they will desperately need to look into it.

I really wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a JIMNY inspired model, rather than the original one to cater to the requirements of the MASS market in India. As for the enthusiasts', the wait and dream will continue.

And for the fun of it, here is an exterior package that is available if you want your Jimny to become a mini G-wagen or mini Defender

For translated version ^. Article speaks about preorder by public, which makes me doubt the authenticity, or is it just another click bait for the Jap's.

Can these orders be from the Army ? Earlier articles confirmed Maruti Suzuki is re-vamping the Gypsy assembly lines for 'special order' intake from the Army.

Bringing Jimny to India will be a great move I guess. It can be marketed as a lifestyle vehicke like Thar or Gypsy. Making it a utilitarian mass market car might loose it's charm IMHO

Isn't it the other way around ? We (Indian Market) never shown any interest towards 20+ Lakh Maruties (Grand Vitatra, Kizashi etc)

The recommissioning of Assembly lines is for the old Gypsy and not the Jimny. The Army has ordered Gypsy and this won't be available for public purchase.

Secondly, the Gypsy assembly line for the Army is at Gurgaon. The Jimny, if its introduced, will be made at the Gujarat plant.

However AFAIK, there is absolutely no talk of the Jimny in lower strata(engineering & design) of MSIL management. What's brewing at Suzuki Japan or Maruti HQ is unknown to me.

Shashi

This is what the news I have also come across. Army is yet to identify a suitable replacement for the Gypsy, so a special production run for another year or so is being done for armed forces. Again only possible, since armed forces are exempted from the BS norms.

re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

In short here is the conclusion as this is also being talked about in Indonesia.

- Suzuki Jimny's waiting period crosses 2 years in some countries with 1 year already in Australia too, Indonesia has clocked 6000 bookings

- Kosai in Japan is the only plant currently producing Jimny and suzuki is exploring options of reducing the waiting period, as orders are not closed yet anywhere.

- SMC seem to have considered India and Indonesia as the manufacturing locations outside Japan. Both countries will have specific export markets identified.

- Expect the Jimny at the 2020 Auto Expo, and Suzuki will be keenly eyeing the response to it.

- Once green lit for India, most likely it would add a 5 door variant, along with the 2 door offering.

For those not convinced of Suzuki Jimny's prowess , here is the latest video:

If we go by the image shared, most of the models which are in India such as Ignis, SCross, Swift all are identical and there pricing also is almost the same in India.

So what are the chances that Maruti Suzuki will mess with design for Jimny?

I like (wish) that it will be a 3 door version and the pricing will be closer to 14-15 lakhs, which I believe is on a higher side compared with the peers it will in that segment.

Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India? Nikkei says so

The Jimny in its standard petrol avatar would work well here for the well off new age lifestyle oriented consumer whether urban or rural.

The standard rural consumers will probably still want diesel and more 'real estate' in their vehicles.

Here are a few more pics of this lovely little vehicle from my visit to the Suzuki Dubai showroom in April this year.

The fit and finish is very good.
There is no comparison that can be made to our Indian Gypsy. Or even the Thar for that matter.

Apparently even in Dubai there is a waiting period.

And there certainly is a waiting period in South Africa, Australia and England and Mainland Europe.

This new Jimny is not yet available in the US/ Canada.

Suzuki Jimny 2019 - A small test drive by dr bones in Namibia.

This is a small test drive of Suzuki jimny 2019 at Windhoek, Namibia. This is not a detailed review. Got lucky to get my hands on this beauty for few minutes.

Jimny with the last gypsy of namibia produced in india. Sales person told me, that they sold 11 gypsies from their dealership. Last gypsy to be sold is standing beside jimny. They got intimation from suzuki that gypsy production is stopped .

Small, cute, and thought is what jimny feels like.

Leather is luxurious - is the most stupid thing i hear every know and then in a review. I hate leather on dashboard, as no body speaks of it after 5 yrs, about how it looks and feel. Interiors of jimny are durable, and comfortable. Thats the way i like my interiors.

Only thing i did not like is the leather on the steering wheel. I personally like that hard rubber steering wheels found on previous gen innova, fortuner etc, those steerings last a life time with out wearing out, in an ugly way as leather steerings do.

Its better not to speak about rear seats, Better to be happy with it as a comfortable 2 seater with good space for luggage.

I will be waiting to own a jimny, once its launched in india. Let maruti take a good beating with their declining sales, only to wake up, and realize that indian consumer is not about just altos, wagon r, or pseudo SUVS.

Nice!
It is indeed a lovely little Jeep.
You rightly said it is a 2 seater with some space for luggage.
It is perfect for a small family or couple with an active lifestyle.
