Scoop! Maruti starts Jimny exports today

As we have reported earlier, Maruti Suzuki has started producing the Jimny for export markets in India. Around 1,200-1,500 units of the 3-door Jimny are being built per month.

We are now being told that Maruti has started dispatching the Jimny to the Mundra port. With this the first made-in-India Jimny crossovers are headed to international markets.

For India, Maruti is said to be working on a 5-door version of the Jimny that is codenamed YWD. Drawings have been finalised and requests for quotations (RFQs) will be submitted to domestic suppliers within January 2021.

The Jimny will be powered by a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine. Maruti is targeting a July 2022 launch date for the Jimny in India.

Thanks to the Team-BHP fan (he prefers to remain anonymous) who sent this information in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP share page!

Re: Scoop! Maruti starts Jimny exports today

Is this including the LCV Jimny made for the EU markets? Or have they sorted out their emissions issues?

I do hope that the Jimny gives India the 3 door option. I think that smallness is the thing that makes it so appealing.

Re: Scoop! Maruti starts Jimny exports today

If Jimny has so much demand everywhere with waiting periods all over world, why can’t Suzuki make 10-15K units per month in India and supply all over? India is a great manufacturing hub for them and they can easily scale up production here to meet market demands.

When demand is there, you simply can't lose it. Suzuki should make sure to en-cash demand when it's there.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

As a manufacturer they have every right to sell to most profitable market but morally, given the high share of business in India, they should have launched this in India too, higher costs notwithstanding.

If Thar can be sold at 15 Lac and command a waiting of 6 month plus, am sure, Jimny could have buyers for 10-20 pieces a month at 20 lacs.

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Just curious, why don't manufacturers allow domestic purchase of vehicles made for export?

Re: Maruti to finally bring Jimny to India?

Was long overdue and I'm happy to see this!

India deserves to become Suzuki's no.1 export base. With the production prowess they have in this country and plateauing domestic sales, Suzuki should stop making lame excuses like being unable to meet demand in other markets.

Current Suzuki India exports pale in comparison to the likes of Hyundai or Ford. High time Suzuki looks at the Indian entity as a major global production base rather than simply a cash cow!

Most Thar customers are buying it for road presence rather than capabilities.. so I'm sure you are not much off the mark in sales prediction.

And producing for India would need a separate production line due to LHD.

It's demand and supply sometimes, like Jimny. They will sell where they earn maximum.

If you mean about certain other vehicles like Swift Export, that has a better-quality interior/ safety, they can launch as another variant as a lot of statuary regulations are to be adhered for a particular model as declared. This will create problems for the domestic variant so they may end up losing sales instead of any gains.

Well, there will be some customers who will also buy a Jimny for the same reason as well

Eventually they have to produce for other RHD markets, and they do it all the time for other models.

You are correct and that's the reason, Maruti has not launched, and I mentioned 10-20 per month units. Am sure, they will find more but they don't want to have a negative publicity or whatever. So, they will continue selling it to overseas markets where they can price higher, like UK market 16000 GBP + VAT translates to around 16 Lac.

With 30%-48% GST, they will earn much lower here in India even if they were to price at 20 Lac
