Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

Maruti Suzuki is no longer offering the Ertiga with a 1.3-litre diesel engine option.

The Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine is said to be slowly phased out as it won't be upgraded to meet the BS-VI emission norms that will come into effect from April 1, 2020.

The only diesel option now available on the Ertiga is a 1.5-litre, which too is expected to be discontinued before BS-VI norms kick-in. This engine produces 94 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 225 Nm @ 1,500-2,500 rpm.

In addition to this, the Ertiga will continue to be offered with a BS-VI compliant 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with mild-hybrid technology. It produces 103 BHP @ 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm @ 4,400 rpm. The upcoming Maruti XL6 MPV is also expected to get the same engine.

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

An era coming to an end ! What an engine that FCA offered to we Indians that qualified as the "national engine" for all these years.

I have always loved the trouble free nature and fuel efficiency of this engine. I am at present using one in my Punto (75 hp) and hope to enjoy it for few more years till the Indian laws force me to bid farewell at the end of 10 years of registration.

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

Welcome move because having experienced the way 1.5 DDiS performs on the Ertiga as a people mover, I am all for it.

The engine's improved characteristics, both in terms of refinement and driveability aspects make it a perfect fit for the Ertiga now. Not to forget the 6th gear that will make you cruise all day at over triple digit speeds while the engine is at ease, hardly working. It may not be the most powerful engine by similar standards but It does the job very well and you won't really complain in any situation.

The only thing to be seen is the reliability of this engine over long term usage which was the USP of the outgoing 1.3 DDiS.

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

With the increased price for 1.5 L Diesel variant, will it force buyers to check the M2 Variant of the Marazzo ?
If Mahindra can add Audio system to their M2 Variant, I am sure some of Ertiga's potential buyers will have a look at Marazzo's M2 Variant !

But sad to see the National Engine of India walk into abyss !

Isn't this the new engine that is replacing the 1.3? Why will it be discontinued before BS-VI?

Because the Diesel 1.5 is not BS6 compliant while the Petrol one is.

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

While I haven't experienced the new 1.5 diesel yet, I will surely miss this engine which powered 4 cars in the family (Ertiga, SX4, Swift and the Dzire). As someone mentioned, indeed it marks end of an era (In a good way). This engine alone made Maruti such big force in our industry and now it will be very interesting to see how the market dynamics shift in favour of other auto makers

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

So will the Ertiga no longer come with a diesel engine post BS6? I was under the impression that the 1.5D is already BS6 compliant. If it will be discontinued, then why introduce the 1.5D for such a short lifecycle?

Does MS have any other diesel replacing the 1.5D on this and other cars?

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

My Father had a company Fiat 137D which came with a Diesel Engine. That time Diesel engines were known to be only used on Commercial Vehicles. But test driving and eventually buying the first Generation diesel Swift changed our complete outlook toward Diesel Engines. The next car which we got also had the same engine in a different state of tune (SX4).

Re: Maruti Ertiga's 1.3L diesel variant discontinued

I don't understand. So Maruti spend millions developing a new diesel engine on its own only to discontinue it by 2020?

That seems terribly counterintuitive.

  • What will discontinue now - 1.3 DDiS
  • What will still be sold - 1.5 DDiS
  • Is 1.5 DDiS Engine BS6 compliant? - No
  • Will 1.5 DDiS Engine ever become BS6 compliant? - Yes, as per sources
Moral of the story - No 1.3 DDiS for now. 1.5 DDiS is the future - Non BS6 complaint now, compliant later.

Thanks haha. Straight and on to the point.

But Maruti did know that BS6 is going to kick in by 2020, it's not like govt announced it all of a sudden in the midnight like demonetisation.

Couldn't they have implemented BS6 at the start itself?

Maruti Suzuki along with Toyota will play the Hybrid Petrol card as it states they are cost neutral when compared to Diesel.

In BS VI diesel they seem to have a wait and watch policy, based on which the availability of the 1.5L diesel which come. probably in 2021.

They had issues in their BSVI diesel engine development and the introduction has been delayed by couple of years.

Some insights to MS' s plans:
